**The Word That Will Save**
📚⏳

A blizzard clawed at the tall lancet windows of the Librarium. Snow hammered the glass. Wind moaned through the chimneys. Even the ancient oak beams groaned under the weight of the storm.

In the far corner, where the air still smelled of old paper and sealing wax, Corvin sat sorting scrolls. Candles flickered. Shadows shifted. Everything was quiet. Calm. Predictable.

Then the great doors burst open.

Three men stumbled in—soaked, gasping, eyes wild with the kind of fear that has already seen too much. They came from the village at the foot of the Black Ridge.

“Corvin,” the eldest managed between breaths. “They’re here. Too many. We held the ridge as long as we could… but if you don’t help, the village will be gone by morning.”

Corvin rose without a word.

He walked past the ordinary shelves and stopped before the restricted section—the one even the head librarian entered only once a year, and never alone. From its depths he drew a tome bound in dark, almost black leather. The title on the spine was never spoken aloud inside these walls.

He laid it on the desk. His hand brushed the pages. They fell open of their own accord, as if they had been waiting.

“I will help,” he said quietly. “But stand back. What I am about to speak is not meant for casual ears.”

The candles died.

Not blown out. Not smothered. They simply ceased, as though an invisible hand had covered every flame at once. The air grew thick and heavy. Shadows on the walls stretched, lengthened, and began to crawl toward the center of the hall—long, unnatural, hungry. Somewhere deep in the stacks, pages rustled though no living hand touched them.

Corvin began to read.

Word by word the air trembled. The floor seemed to ripple beneath his boots. A thin, glowing mist rose from the open tome, coiled around his arms, climbed to his shoulders, and hung there, waiting.

Then he spoke the final name.

“Lord of the Flies.”

The mist flared turquoise-green and twisted into a living vortex—the exact shape of the artifact sealed within those pages. For a heartbeat the entire Librarium held its breath.

Far below the Black Ridge, the attackers never saw what came for them.

A sudden, unnatural wind rose from the snow itself. It carried no ordinary insects. It carried a swarm of shadow-flies—thousands upon thousands of flickering, glowing motes that poured down the mountainside like a living storm. They did not sting. They did not bite. They simply entered every open mouth, every eye, every ear of the invaders, filling them with the same terror the villagers had felt all night.

Men dropped their weapons. Horses reared and fled. The disciplined ranks that had been moments from overrunning the village collapsed into screaming chaos. By the time the first light of false dawn touched the ridge, the attackers were gone—scattered into the blizzard, driven mad by a presence they could neither fight nor understand.

Back in the Librarium the last word fell into silence like a stone into still water.

A soft wave passed through the hall. The candles lit themselves. The shadows retreated to their proper places. The village envoys at the door exchanged stunned glances. The fear that had driven them here had simply… left.

Corvin closed the tome.

“Return,” he said. “It’s over.”

He offered no further explanation.

But the mark remained—quiet, dark, and living—on the pages of that forbidden book, and in the memory of everyone who had stood in the hall while the Lord of the Flies answered its name.

Some spells do more than save.
They leave a scar on the world.

And Corvin had just written one.

The blizzard clawed at the high arrow windows of the Librarium like a living thing. Snow drove hard against the glass, the wind moaned through the chimneys, and the ancient oak beams overhead creaked in protest. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of old paper, dust, and melted wax. Corvin sat in his usual corner at the farthest rack, methodically turning yellowed scrolls by candlelight. Shadows danced on the stone walls. Everything was quiet. Predictable.
Then the great doors burst open.
Three villagers staggered in—soaked, gasping, eyes wide with terror. They had come from the settlement at the foot of the Black Ridge.
“Corvin!” the eldest rasped. “Trouble. We were attacked. We held as long as we could, but there are too many. If you don’t help, the village will be gone by morning.”
Corvin rose without a word. He walked to the forbidden section—the shelves even the senior librarians approached only once a year, and never alone. From its place he drew a heavy folio bound in dark, unmarked leather. The name on the spine was deliberately erased; no one spoke it aloud here. He laid the book on the table. His palm brushed the cover, and the pages opened of their own accord to the place that waited for him.
“I’ll help,” he said quietly. “But stand back. What I am about to speak is not for unprepared ears.”

The candles died as one—no gust, no breath, simply extinguished, as though covered by an invisible hand. The air grew heavy. Shadows lengthened and crawled toward the center of the hall. Somewhere deep in the stacks, pages fluttered though no hand touched them.
Corvin began to read.

Word by word the air itself seemed to tighten. A thin, luminous fog rose from the open pages, coiled around his wrists, climbed his arms, and hovered, awaiting command. None of the three villagers knew the precise syllables he chose, but every one of them felt the world shift.

Far below the Black Ridge, the creatures that had poured from the mountain’s shadowed clefts—tall, jointless things of smoke and bone, with too many limbs and mouths that opened sideways—suddenly staggered. Their howls cut short. The spell Corvin spoke was a banishment of the old tongue, drawn from the deepest strata of the forbidden volume: a working that unmade the thin places between worlds. One by one the creatures were seized by invisible currents and dragged screaming into a realm of endless grey mist and silence, a place from which nothing returns. By the time the last syllable left Corvin’s lips, the ridge was empty. The attack was over. The monsters were gone forever.

Corvin closed the book. The candles flared back to life. The shadows retreated.

He did not stop there.

From a second volume—slim, bound in dull grey leather and titled simply Power and Control—he opened to a single, carefully marked page. The Loss of Memory spell. He spoke it softly, almost gently, directing its current not at the three men before him but outward, across the frozen miles, to every soul who had witnessed the night’s horror.

When the final word settled, the fear in the villagers’ eyes simply… faded. They blinked, looked at one another, and found only the ordinary weariness of a hard journey through snow. The memory of the creatures, the blood, the desperate defense—all of it had been lifted cleanly away. They would return to a village that had never been attacked, to families who would never speak of terror, and they would live the rest of their days in quiet, unbroken peace.

Corvin raised his head.
“Go home,” he said. “It is finished.”

He offered no further explanation. The three men left, already forgetting why they had come. Corvin remained alone among the shelves. The two books rested closed before him. Somewhere in the deep stacks a page turned of its own accord, as though the Librarium itself were recording what had been done.

Some spells save a village.

Others leave a quieter, darker mark—on the world, and on the one who speaks them.

Corvin blew out the candles and returned to his corner.

Outside, the blizzard continued to howl, but inside the Librarium the silence was absolute once more.

A Beacon Among the Stars

The blizzard clawed at the high arrow windows of the Librarium like a living thing. Snow drove hard against the glass, the wind moaned through the chimneys, and the ancient oak beams overhead creaked in protest.

Inside, the air smelled of old paper, beeswax, and time itself.

Corvin sat in his usual corner beneath towering shelves, quietly studying scrolls whose ink had faded centuries before most kingdoms were born. Candlelight flickered across worn stone floors while shadows drifted lazily over the walls.

Everything was quiet.

Predictable.

Then the great doors burst open.

Three villagers stumbled inside, soaked with melting snow, faces pale with terror.

“Corvin!” the eldest cried. “Please…the Black Ridge. They came from the mountain. We’ve never seen creatures like them.”

His voice shook.

“They’re tearing through the village. Nothing stops them.”

Corvin listened without interrupting.

Then he rose.

Not toward the shelves marked Forbidden Magic.

Farther.

Beyond them.

To a single cabinet sealed beneath silver locks older than the Librarium itself.

Inside rested a massive folio wrapped in midnight-blue leather.

No title adorned its spine.

Only a constellation embossed in silver.

Corvin carried it reverently to the great reading table.

The moment his fingertips touched the cover, the clasps released with a soft metallic sigh.

The pages turned by themselves.

Not searching.

Remembering.

“I will help,” Corvin said quietly.

“But what you witness tonight was never meant to become legend.”

The candles extinguished all at once.

Not from wind.

Not from lack of air.

It was as though the room itself had dimmed.

The shadows lengthened across the stone floor while a pale blue light emerged from the ancient pages.

The symbols were unlike any written language.

They shimmered.

Shifted.

Moved like living starlight.

Corvin did not begin a spell.

He began a transmission.

He spoke ancient harmonic tones—not words of magic, but frequencies first taught to humanity when the Earth was still young.

A beacon.

A request.

A promise remembered.

The Librarium answered.

Far above the storm…

Beyond the clouds…

Beyond even the stars hidden behind them…

Something awakened.

One…

then three…

then seven brilliant points of light changed course.

Across impossible distances, the signal had been heard.

The Pleiadians came first.

Their luminous vessels glided silently through the atmosphere like silver moons, radiating warmth instead of fire.

Moments later, angular crystalline ships of the Arcturians emerged behind them, surrounded by shimmering geometric fields that bent light itself.

No engines roared.

No weapons fired.

Only silence.

Only purpose.

Below, the creatures poured from the shattered caverns beneath Black Ridge.

They were horrors born between dimensions—towering forms of smoke stretched over impossible skeletons, with too many limbs, too many eyes, and mouths that opened sideways into darkness. Their movements bent the air around them, and every step carried whispers that no human mind was meant to understand.

The Federation ships hovered above the village.

Columns of golden-white light descended from the heavens.

The creatures froze.

Not in pain.

In recognition.

The light unraveled the unstable energies holding them inside Earth’s reality.

One by one, the beasts dissolved into drifting ribbons of shadow and silver mist.

They were not destroyed.

They were gently returned to the Astral Plain…

the quiet realm between worlds…

where wandering spirits and displaced beings could no longer harm the living.

Within moments…

The village stood untouched beneath the falling snow.

The stars above grew quiet once more.

The Federation vessels slowly ascended into the storm until they disappeared beyond sight.

Corvin watched until the final point of light vanished.

Only then did he open a second volume.

Smaller.

Gray.

Simple.

Its title read only:

Power and Control

He turned to a page carefully marked generations before.

The Loss of Memory.

This was no punishment.

It was mercy.

Corvin whispered the ancient invocation, and the pages glowed with soft blue light.

Far above, unseen by human eyes, the Pleiadian vessels answered one final time.

A wave of gentle light spread across the valley.

It passed through every home.

Every window.

Every sleeping child.

Every frightened villager.

The memories of terror lifted like morning fog beneath the rising sun.

The screams…

The monsters…

The fear…

Gone.

Not stolen.

Healed.

The people would remember only an unusually fierce winter storm.

Nothing more.

Corvin closed both books.

The candles relit themselves.

The shadows returned to their quiet places among the shelves.

The three villagers blinked.

They looked at one another with puzzled expressions.

The urgency that had driven them across the snow had simply… disappeared.

Corvin smiled gently.

“You should go home.”

One of them frowned.

“Were we… looking for a book?”

Corvin nodded toward the door.

“Your village is safe.”

They thanked him, though none of them could remember exactly why.

Outside, the blizzard continued to howl against the ancient stone walls.

Above the clouds, hidden beyond human sight, seven small lights drifted silently back toward the stars.

Friends from distant worlds…

Guardians of an ancient promise.

The Librarium recorded no miracle that night.

Only that a beacon had been answered.

And somewhere between the pages of forgotten history and the endless sky, Corvin knew humanity had never truly been alone.

Corvin had closed his book. The deed was done. The spell had been cast. No way back now. Either it would work or the village would be destroyed, thoroughly, as it had never existed.
Corvin walked out of the library, slowly, purposely. There was an eerie stillness in the air, a deep silence, not even the tree leaves were swaying in the wind. He continued walking until he reached the village. The spell had worked its magic! Time itself had stopped and all, both attackers and defenders, were frozen in the positions they had been 5 minutes earlier. Only Corvin himself had been spared and was moving around. One by one, he removed the weapons of the invaders and collected them all on a pile in the village main hall. Then, he pushed the attackers together and tied them all up to the trees in the main square. He left them there and walked back to the librarium, sat down and continued searching through the scrolls.
He finally found what he was looking for, a way to reverse the spell. He took his time freezing device and chanted the mysterious words that would allow time to follow its natural course. Soon he could hear the wind outside, the birds chirping happily and the villagers that had come to the librarium for help, making confused noises and wondering what had happened. Corvin sent them back to the village and told them to look what was happening in the main square.
It was a great day for the village people. The enemy had been defeated, they had been saved. Nobody cared how this miracle had happened.
Corvin continued his quiet, scholarly life, reading, learning, studying magic.

Dispute on the Sand
There's a scandal on Bikini Atoll today. So much so that even the seagulls have stopped screaming and perched on the palm trees to see how it all ends.
And all because two best friends, Lilu and Mara, are standing knee-deep in turquoise water, arguing for a good hour about whose beach outfit is cooler.
"It'll slide off if you sneeze!" Lilu yells, adjusting her strap.
"And yours is so revealing, you could dive in it!" Mara retorts.
"But mine has the colors! Look at these colors!"
"Colors? I have a print that makes sharks swim away!"
A whole crowd gathers on the sand. Some surfer suggests a competition: whose outfit will last the longest in the waves. The bartender from the beach bar agrees to judge. The old fisherman, dozing in the shade of a palm tree, only chuckles. "I've lived here for sixty years," he says, "but I've never seen anything like this."
What nobody on the beach knew — not the bartender, not the surfer, not even the crab who'd wandered into the judging committee uninvited — was that Mara had a secret. Three days earlier, walking past the shipwreck to a stretch of sand so quiet even the parrots ignored it, she'd found a driftwood stall with no sign and no prices. Just an old woman with seaweed in her hair, arranging swimsuits on a rack made of coral.
"These don't come off in waves," the woman had said, without being asked. "Not storms, not currents, not surprise proposals." The price was one secret, honestly told. Mara paid it.
So when the duel began and Lilu dove in first — lasting four proud waves before her top had other plans — Mara wasn't worried. And when her own turn came and her bottoms drifted off toward the shipwreck mid-victory-twirl, she wasn't worried then either. Losing round one meant nobody would suspect round two.
The bartender ruled it a tie. The surfer agreed, mostly because he wanted lunch. The crab, unable to speak, was counted as a tiebreaking abstention. Nobody was satisfied, which meant everyone was.
That night, while Lilu slept off her coconut rum, Mara slipped back to the quiet stretch of sand. The old woman was waiting, as she always was.
"Rematch tomorrow," Mara said. "I need the good one."
The woman handed over a swimsuit the color of the water at sunset — a color that didn't have a name yet, because nobody had been brave enough to wear it before. "One condition," she said. "You tell Lilu where the shop is. After."
"After I win."
"After," the woman agreed, "either way."
The rematch was legendary. Mara stayed in the water through eleven waves, a rogue jellyfish, and one deeply confused pelican, and the suit never budged. The crowd went silent. Even the old fisherman sat up in his hammock.
Lilu marched up afterward, dripping and furious and deeply impressed. "Where did you get that?"
Mara just pointed down the beach, past the shipwreck. "Ask her nicely. She only takes secrets as payment."
So Lilu did. By the following week, half the girls on Bikini Atoll were wearing suits in colors without names, all of them paid for in whispered confessions to an old woman who never raised her prices and never told a single one of them to anyone else.
As for Lilu and Mara — they don't argue quite so loudly anymore, though every time they meet at the water's edge, they still glance at each other appraisingly. The bartender swears they've made a secret truce and now trade suits behind the bar. The surfer swears they're just tired.
The old fisherman, watching it all from his hammock, only smiles. "On this island," he says, "all arguments end the same way — in friendship. Or in trading. Usually both."
He doesn't say what he traded to know that. Nobody asks. On Bikini Atoll, that's just how things are done.
