PART 2 — Tara’s Journal

The King’s Sword

I would like the official record to state…

None of this was my fault.

Mostly.

While DeNae was busy being adopted by royalty, I found a suspicious-looking hallway.

Naturally…

I investigated.

One absolutely normal-looking tapestry later…

I accidentally walked through the wall.

Don’t judge me.

It looked solid.

Mostly.

Behind it stood an enormous armory.

Rows and rows of legendary weapons.

Axes.

Spears.

Helmets.

Armor.

Very pointy everything.

Then I saw it.

The King’s Sword.

It rested upon a marble stand surrounded by glowing runes.

It practically screamed,

“Touch me.”

I wisely ignored that instinct.

For nearly…

Five seconds.

The moment my fingers brushed the jeweled hilt—

WHOOSH.

Light everywhere.

When I could see again…

I was surrounded by knights.

Lots of knights.

Very shiny knights.

One immediately knelt.

“My Lady!”

Another bowed.

“A thousand apologies for keeping you waiting.”

A third smiled.

“I shall escort you.”

Escort?

To where?

Apparently everyone had mistaken me for a visiting noblewoman expected to witness the Trial of Courage.

Oops.

The captain of the guard explained.

“The future king cannot claim the King’s Sword until he proves worthy.”

“So…”

“What dragon are we fighting?”

The captain blinked.

“Dragon?”

“Yes?”

“No.”

“Giant?”

“No.”

“Ogre?”

“No.”

He looked confused.

“The trial is leadership.”

Honestly…

That sounded much scarier.

Word soon spread that the prince’s trial involved recovering the King’s Sword after it had mysteriously disappeared.

Except…

It hadn’t disappeared.

I’d accidentally picked it up.

Again.

Oops.

https://upforme.ru/uploads/0019/3c/8c/7190/414780.png

Soon the castle buzzed with excitement.

Half the knights volunteered to escort me.

The other half volunteered to rescue me.

Several volunteered simply because they apparently liked my smile.

One brought flowers.

One wrote poetry.

One challenged another knight to a duel over who got to carry my backpack.

I let them.

It was heavy.

Poor Sir Cedric tried impressing me by dramatically drawing his sword.

It flew from his hands.

Across the courtyard.

Into a fountain.

A duck looked offended.

I may have laughed.

Just a little.

Eventually we reached the Great Hall where the prince stood waiting.

He looked defeated.

“If I cannot even protect the Sword…”

“How could I protect a kingdom?”

I looked around at the anxious knights.

Then at the sword in my hands.

“Maybe…”

“The test isn’t about never losing it.”

Everyone stared.

“It’s about what you do after.”

The prince frowned thoughtfully.

“So what should I do?”

“Tell the truth.”

“Accept responsibility.”

“Ask for help.”

“Lead the people already willing to stand beside you.”

The knights immediately stepped forward.

Every single one.

No hesitation.

The prince smiled.

For the first time all day.

The royal mentor nodded.

“The King’s Sword has never chosen the strongest.”

“It chooses the one brave enough to place duty above pride.”

The jeweled blade shimmered with brilliant light before settling peacefully into the prince’s hands.

Not because he had won a battle.

Because he had admitted he couldn’t do everything alone.

That…

Takes courage.

https://upforme.ru/uploads/0019/3c/8c/7190/381547.png

Then…

The armory dissolved.

The castle vanished.

The overly charming knights disappeared before anyone could ask if I wanted to attend the royal feast.

(A tragedy, really. I hear there was pie.)

I stumbled backward into the present-day Treasury…

Right into DeNae.

She was holding notes.

I was holding…

Well…

Nothing.

The sword rested safely back inside its display case as though it had never moved.

Probably for the best.

The curator glanced at us suspiciously.

“You two weren’t touching the exhibits…”

DeNae answered immediately.

“Of course not.”

I smiled innocently.

“Would you believe they touched us?”

He sighed.

“…Another Mystery Manor adventure?”

“Yep.”

Back in the quiet corner of the Treasury, another faded page slipped gently into the ancient book.

Perhaps this was the forgotten trial that once allowed a future ruler to earn the King’s Sword.

Or perhaps history remembered only the ending and forgot the lesson.

But the old mentors would surely have smiled.

For power is never proven by the weapon someone carries.

It is proven in the moment they choose honesty over pride, responsibility over excuses, and the courage to lead others—not above them.

And as DeNae and I wandered back out into the present-day Mystery Manor, we couldn’t help but wonder…

What forgotten trial would the Treasury ask us to restore next?

The Trial of the Circlet
A lost page, restored from the Treasury's book of trials

The margin note beside the circlet's sketch was almost illegible, worn soft by centuries of thumbs. Only three words survived: "Not the loudest."
This is the story the book once told in full.

There was a kingdom where old King Aldric had three children, and only one crown. The kingdom's mentors — a council of elders led by a sharp-eyed woman named Mira, who had outlived four rulers between them — refused to simply hand the circlet to whichever child shouted their claim the loudest. So they devised a test, and told none of the heirs what it was until the morning it began.
Each was led, alone, to a village on the kingdom's poorest edge, and given a single task: spend one season there, unrecognized, and leave the place better than you found it.
Thaddeus, the eldest, was famous across the kingdom for his stirring speeches. He arrived in the village and promised the people roads, grain, and glory. He gave grand orations from the steps of the well. The villagers listened, nodded politely, and went back to their broken cart wheels, which remained broken.
Elara, the second, was known for her cleverness. She arrived and immediately began solving problems — rerouting the irrigation ditch, fixing the mill gears, reorganizing the granary with brisk, brilliant efficiency. The village grew more orderly. But she solved everything for the villagers, never with them, and when she left, no one there could explain how any of it worked, or felt it was truly theirs.
Wren, the youngest, had never been considered a serious claimant by anyone — least of all herself. She arrived with no plan at all. She spent the first month simply listening: to Old Halda, who complained about the well; to a boy named Ossian, who hated the schoolteacher; to a farmer named Corwin, convinced the soil was cursed rather than merely exhausted. She made almost no decisions on her own. Instead, she kept asking the villagers what they thought should be done, and then helped them do it — badly, at first, and slowly. By the season's end, the cart wheel was fixed by the man who owned it, taught by Wren but built by his own hands. The well still creaked, but the whole village now knew how to mend it themselves.
When the three heirs returned to the capital, Mira asked each of them the same question: "What did you leave behind?"
Thaddeus said he had left them inspired. Elara said she had left them improved. Wren, after a long pause, said quietly, "I think I left them capable. Without me."
The elders set the circlet on Wren's head that same evening. When she asked, startled, why her — when she'd done the least of the three, by her own account — Mira said the thing the margin note would, generations later, barely manage to preserve:
"A ruler's greatness is measured by what still stands after they've stepped back. Thaddeus gave them a moment. Elara gave them a solution. You gave them the road to their own answers — and that is the only gift a crown was ever meant to protect."
The circlet, the elders explained afterward, had never been a reward for confidence, brilliance, or even kindness. It was a test of restraint — of whether a person could hold power loosely enough to keep handing pieces of it back to the people beneath them, season after season, for as long as they wore it.

Whether this is the trial that once earned someone the right to the Royal Circlet, or whether the true story was lost to time entirely, no one in the Treasury can say for certain. But the old mentors, wherever they are now, would likely agree: the crown was never the hard part. Staying worthy of it was.

https://upforme.ru/uploads/0019/3c/8c/7219/t872367.pngQuête Le droit de porter un symbole
Mamie code 667a2c

Adventure Quest.  The Treasury - The Right To Wear a Symbol

The Right to Wear a Symbol
📍 Treasury for the Mysterious House

The oldest chamber of the Treasury held a peculiar chronicle unlike any other. Its cracked leather cover concealed no glorious battles, glittering inventions of royal wealth, or triumphant campaigns. Instead, every fading page spoke of the forgotten trials that shaped future rulers before they were ever entrusted with a symbol of authority. Ancient mentors believed a crown, scepter, or jeweled cross meant nothing unless its bearer had already demonstrated wisdom, integrity, and the courage to accept responsibility. Sadly, centuries had claimed most of the stories, leaving only scattered notes beside the names of the sacred relics. One entry mentioned the  Royal Cross  from the  Treasures of the Rulers  collection, followed only by three faded words:  "Judge... Laugh... Forgive."  The missing tale, however, may have belonged to one of England's most remarkable kings— Henry II .

Before Henry was allowed to wear the Royal Cross, his tutors devised a trial unlike any expected by an ambitious prince. Rather than commanding armies or debating scholars, he was disguised in plain wool clothing and sent into a bustling medieval market where no one recognized him. His task seemed simple: every dispute brought before him before sunset. The trouble was that medieval marketplaces produced arguments faster than bakers produced bread. One merchant insisted his neighbor's goose had stolen priceless grain. Two monks debated whether an exceptionally lazy donkey technically counted as church property if it wandered away during morning prayers. A blacksmith demanded compensation because a knight's horse had sneezed molten soot onto his freshly polished helmet. Every decision had to satisfy both law and common sense—or the trial would end in failure.

By midday, Henry's patience was wearing thinner than an overused monastery manuscript. Just when he believed the worst had passed, an elderly widow arrived carrying what appeared to be the Royal Cross itself. She claimed it had been found buried beneath her vegetable garden, while a wealthy noble immediately declared that every treasure discovered on his estate belonged to him. Their heated argument attracted nearly the entire marketplace. Henry carefully examined the relic before announcing that neither claimant would receive it until its rightful history could be determined. The crowd grumbled loudly, accusing the young judge of avoiding a difficult decision.

Then came the unexpected twist. The widow burst into laughter, removed her gray wig, and revealed herself as Henry's own mentor in disguise. The indignant noble followed by removing his extravagant beard—which proved to be entirely fake. The cross itself was genuine, but the entire dispute had been carefully staged. The true purpose of the trial was never to identify the owner of a treasure. Instead, it was to discover whether Henry would surrender to pressure from an angry crowd or remain loyal to justice even when everyone demanded a quicker, easier answer. Embarrassed by how thoroughly he had been fooled, Henry could only laugh along with the cheering spectators. His mentor declared that any prince clever enough to laugh at himself would be far less likely to become a tyrant.

Only then was the Royal Cross placed around Henry's neck. The ancient symbol represented more than royal authority—it reminded its bearer that justice often required patience, humility, and the courage to disappoint those demanding convenient answers. History would remember Henry II as a ruler whose legal reforms transformed England's system of royal justice, laying foundations that endured for centuries. Perhaps those famous reforms were rooted not merely in scholarship, but in one unforgettable day spent settling arguments over geese, donkeys, and soot-covered helmets while learning that fairness is rarely the quickest path to peace.

With the image of the Royal Cross safely preserved, another missing page of the Treasury's mysterious chronicle has been restored. Whether this was the trial Henry II faced or simply one inspired by fragments of forgotten genuine history may never be known. Yet its lesson remains timeless: true leadership begins long before a ruler receives the emblems of authority. It starts when someone willingly accepts the weight of those responsibility symbols represent. Deep within the Treasury, countless other faded pages still wait for someone curious enough to bring their forgotten trials back into the light.
