👽🔦 SITE 51-DELTA — PART 1: DeNae

“THE SUITCASE STARTED TALKING”

DeNae had learned one very important thing about Guild investigations:

If Tara said, “I have a theory,” everyone should immediately locate the nearest exit.

Unfortunately, there were no exits.

There was only Room 51, a dark hallway, John and Celeste standing beside an open equipment case, and a device inside it making a noise that could best be described as an electronic panic attack.

John stared into the suitcase.

Celeste stared at John.

DeNae stared at both of them.

And Tara whispered, with entirely too much delight, “Aliens.”

“No,” John said.

“You don’t even know what it is yet,” DeNae pointed out.

“I know what it isn’t.”

The device chirped again.

Celeste calmly reached into the case and pulled out something shaped like an earpiece crossed with a piece of technology designed by someone who had only heard rumors about human ears.

The display flashed.

UNIVERSAL TRANSLATOR — ACTIVE

There was a moment of silence.

Then DeNae said, “Well. That seems unnecessarily specific.”

John folded his arms. “Department prototype.”

Celeste looked at him.

John reconsidered. “Experimental department prototype.”

The translator crackled.

A voice came through.

“RETURN THE SHINY RECTANGLE.”

Everyone froze.

Tara immediately lit up. “I KNEW IT.”

“You knew absolutely nothing,” John said.

“Technically,” DeNae replied, “she has been yelling aliens for several years, so eventually probability was going to betray us.”

Celeste was already taking notes.

Of course she was.

The translator crackled again.

“THE ONE WITH THE FACE HAIR HAS OUR DEVICE.”

Every head turned toward John.

John slowly touched his face.

“No.”

DeNae looked down into the suitcase.

There, underneath a flashlight and several pieces of perfectly normal government equipment, sat a chunky black computer watch with a tiny illuminated screen.

“Oh,” she said.

John looked offended. “That was already in there.”

Celeste raised one eyebrow.

John pointed at her. “Do not do the eyebrow.”

She did the eyebrow harder.

DeNae picked up the watch.

The screen immediately came alive.

A grid appeared.

Then a blinking dot.

Then another.

Then twelve more.

All around them.

DeNae slowly looked up.

“John?”

“Yes?”

“I think your raccoons have surrounded us.”

The lights in Room 51 flickered.

Something moved behind the observation glass.

Then another shape.

Then another.

Tall.

Thin.

Definitely not raccoon-shaped.

Tara leaned toward DeNae and whispered, “Do you think they’ll let me drive the spaceship?”

DeNae closed her eyes.

“Why,” she asked the universe, “did I come here with her?”

And somewhere beside her, Celeste quietly wrote:

Incident 10. Husband still in denial.

👽⌚ SITE 51-DELTA — PART 2: Tara

“JOHN WOULD LIKE THE RECORD TO SHOW THERE WERE NO ALIENS”

There were aliens.

Tara felt this fact deserved to be stated immediately, because John was already attempting to ruin history.

“They could be people in protective suits,” he said.

One of the figures behind the glass bent sideways at an angle no human spine had ever approved.

Tara pointed.

John sighed. “Flexible people.”

Celeste made another note.

DeNae murmured, “His commitment to this is becoming inspirational.”

The computer watch on DeNae’s wrist suddenly vibrated and projected a glowing schematic into the air.

Tara gasped.

John said, “Holographic mapping.”

The schematic rotated.

A blinking message appeared:

AUTHORIZED USER DETECTED

Then:

WELCOME BACK

Tara went very still.

DeNae looked at her.

Celeste looked at her.

John looked at her.

Tara smiled.

“Oh, this is going to be fun.”

“No,” John said immediately.

“You don’t even know what I’m going to say.”

“I have known you long enough.”

The Universal Translator chirped.

“THE BLONDE ONE IS RECOGNIZED.”

Tara put both hands on her hips.

“THANK YOU.”

John stared at the ceiling.

“Of course.”

The translator continued.

“PREVIOUS CONTACT CONFIRMED.”

DeNae slowly turned toward Tara.

Celeste stopped writing.

Even John looked concerned.

Tara, however, looked delighted.

“I have been trying to tell all of you.”

“You have suggested at various times,” DeNae said, “that you were contacted by aliens, fairies, ancient astronomers, a suspicious owl, and possibly a vending machine.”

“The vending machine knew things.”

John rubbed both hands over his face.

The computer watch flashed again and unlocked a door at the far end of the corridor.

Behind it was not another room.

It was a hangar.

A very large hangar.

Containing a very large silver craft.

Silence.

Absolute, beautiful silence.

Tara turned slowly toward John.

John stared at the ship.

Tara waited.

John stared harder.

DeNae waited.

Celeste smiled.

Finally John said, “Experimental aircraft.”

Tara nearly collapsed.

JOHN.”

“It has wings.”

“It absolutely does not have wings!”

“Maybe retractable.”

The Universal Translator crackled.

“THE SKEPTICAL MALE IS EXHAUSTING.”

Celeste burst out laughing.

DeNae had to lean against the wall.

Tara pointed at the translator triumphantly.

“EVEN THE ALIENS ARE DONE WITH YOU.”

John looked personally betrayed by technology.

Then the craft powered up.

Lights swept across the hangar.

The computer watch started counting down.

00:10

00:09

00:08

Celeste grabbed John.

DeNae grabbed Tara.

Tara grabbed the translator.

“WAIT, I HAVE QUESTIONS.”

“You always have questions!” DeNae yelled.

“THIS IS MY MOMENT.”

The four of them sprinted back through Room 51 as the hallway shook behind them.

They made it outside just as a brilliant light shot silently into the night sky and vanished among the stars.

An hour later, at a 24-hour diner, John sat pale and silent over a cup of coffee.

Celeste took a picture of him.

Tara and DeNae sat across the booth, both looking unbearably pleased.

John finally spoke.

“Okay. One-zero.”

Celeste smiled and straightened his collar.

“But,” he added, “that does not mean I believe in aliens.”

Tara nearly spit out her coffee.

DeNae stared at him.

Celeste quietly picked up her phone and added one final note:

Incident 10: extraterrestrial spacecraft witnessed by four people. Husband remains an idiot. Marriage intact.

And Tara?

Tara was already wearing the computer watch.

Nobody remembered giving it to her.

Merci 🥰

Adventure Quest. Room 51 - Site 51-Delta With Special Introduction for:

Site 51-Delta 👽🔦
📍 Room 51 of the Mysterious House — Agent 51's Headquarters
The call came at two in the morning, which is when people with ordinary jobs roll over and people like us learn that an abandoned laboratory has started transmitting without electricity. Celeste was already checking our rapid response suitcase before I found my second shoe. For seven years, she had personally inspected every latch, battery, and deeply suspicious piece of departmental equipment before every assignment. Regulations forbade entering a facility without it. Having once watched something inside that suitcase bite a technician, I understood why.

At Agent 51's headquarters, tucked inside Room 51 of the Mysterious House, the department liked to joke that ours was the only marriage to survive seven years of professional disagreements with both wedding rings intact. I preferred evidence I could examine. Celeste had witnessed enough impossible things to keep a notebook instead of arguing. Her notebook had an appalling success rate.

“Abnormal activity,” I said, fastening my jacket in the car, “means raccoons or a drunken watchman nine times out of ten.”

“And the tenth,” she replied, testing the suitcase locks, “is why we chose this job.”

I glanced at my beautiful wife, whose expression suggested she had already reserved a page for whatever I was about to get wrong.

“Perhaps we're due.

Site 51-Delta crouched beyond the House's eastern grounds beneath a sky without stars. Its windows were black, its security fence sagged, and something behind the laboratory roof illuminated the clouds from underneath.

“Unusual lightning,” I suggested.

“It's green.

“Budget lightning.

Inside, our flashlight beams slide over rusty equipment skeletons and plaster scattered like old bones. The corridors amplified every footstep until it sounded as though a much larger party had joined us without introducing itself. I carried the suitcase while explaining that we were probably investigating an abandoned experimental yogurt laboratory.

“Expired cultures,” I said. “They've developed civilization. We're walking into a dairy uprising.”

Celeste rolled her eyes, but the little smile beside her flashlight was the one I'd fallen in love with in places considerably less welcoming than this.

Then a grinding shriek tore through the ceiling.

I dropped the suitcase and pulled her against the wall, covering her as a sheet of metal lining crashed onto the floor two yards away. Dust burst around us.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

“My hero,” Celeste murmured. “Even without believing in ghosts.”

“I believe enthusiastically in falling metal. Are you hurt?”

“No.

"Good. Because I'd hate to lose an argument on a technicality."

My hand was still on her shoulder when the suitcase began screaming.

Not an alarm. Something inside was producing three piercing notes, pausing, then repeating them with increasing urgency.

I crouched and opened the lid.

Between the radiation meter and an instrument labeled DO NOT POINT AT YOUR OWN PAST , a silver device was glowing blue.

The Universal Translator , from the department's Secret Devices collection.

“Celeste—”

She was beside me immediately. The humor went out of her face.

“That wasn't switched on.”

The translator unfolded in my hand. Thin silver rings lifted from its casing and revolved around a bead of light. Across its screen appeared:

LANGUAGE DETECTED.
SOURCE DISTANCE: 8,412 LIGHT-YEARS.
MESSAGE AGE: LIVE.

I checked the display twice.

As a pilot, I respected instruments. I also knew that when one reported something ridiculous, you cross-checked before making a decision.

“Either this needs calibrating,” I said, “or somebody's roaming charges are about to end a civilization.”

From the dark end of the hallway came a crackle.

Then a voice whispered through the translator.

"Please. Don't let the corridor finish arriving."

Celeste looked past my shoulder.

“John,” she said quietly, “I think we've found our tenth case.”

Our flashlights caught a radio standing on a wheeled laboratory trolley.

It almost looked disappointingly ordinary: black casing, brass tuning dial, cloth speaker grille. Then its antenna bends towards us.

Not fell .

Bent.

Behind it, the hallway had become longer than the building.

Doors repeated into a blue distance. Through one window, something immense drifted past a field of stars. Another showed an ocean hanging vertically, with pale creatures swimming behind the glass.

I stopped walking .

“All right,” I said. “That exceeds what I'm prepared to blame on a draft.”

Celeste studied the dust around the trolley.

“No footprints. No wheel tracks. This radio didn't come down the hallway.”

The translator pulsed.

“Correct,” said the voice. “I brought the hallway to the radio.”

Static gathered above the antenna, resolving into a small translucent figure with four arms, enormous eyes, and the exhausted posture of someone whose workday had gone catastrophically wrong.

“My name is Taviik. Relay engineer, vessel Evening Promise. Please tell me you are the rescue service.”

“We’re married,” I said. “Our experience managing emergencies is extensive. What happened?”

Taviik’s ship was stranded more than eight thousand light-years away. The Special Radio was an ancient communications terminal—capable of speaking across that distance instantly.

Unfortunately, someone at the abandoned laboratory had modified it.

“They wanted to receive physical objects,” Celeste guessed, examining cables soldered into its side.

Taviik’s four hands knotted together.

“They succeeded. Your receiver heard my distress call and began retrieving my ship.”

A deep metallic groan rolled beneath our feet.

“How large a ship?” I asked.

“Approximately eleven of your kilometers.”

I looked at the narrow corridor.

“We’re going to have trouble with the corners.”

The translator flashed red.

TRANSFER COMPLETION: 04:00.

Celeste was already reading the faded handwritten notes taped beneath the trolley.

“Can we stop it?”

“Yes,” Taviik said. “But disconnecting the power will sever the passage through my vessel.”

“How many aboard?” I asked.

“Six hundred and twelve.”

Celeste met my eyes.

That settled it.

“Then we leave the power alone,” I said. “Tell us how to bring you home safely.”

Taviik projected a chart into the air. Routes branched across it like lightning trapped in glass. Most ended in red symbols that the translator helpfully identified as COLLISION, STELLAR INTERIOR, or REGRETTABLE DESTINATION.

I recognized the useful parts: position, heading, drift.

“I fly an airplane,” I told him. “Give me your present course and somewhere safe to land.”

“You understand folded-space navigation?”

“Not yet. Start with the part that keeps everyone alive.”

While Taviik explained, Celeste walked along the wall, watching the blue flashes traveling through the exposed cables.

“The radio isn’t controlling the destination,” she said suddenly. “It’s following a signal.”

She pointed to a little amber light beneath the tuning dial.

On. On. Pause. On.

The ceiling lights answered in exactly the same rhythm.

“They connected the laboratory’s emergency beacon to the receiver. Your ship thinks this hallway is a landing site.”

Taviik’s image brightened.

“Yes! Redirect the beacon!”

“Where?” I asked.

Celeste smiled.

“Your navigation chart has an emergency relay station. Right there.”

She had spotted a faint green point beyond the clutter of red warnings.

I could have kissed her.

I scheduled it for after the imminent collision.

We had ninety seconds.

Celeste opened the radio’s side panel while I used its brass dial to shift the projected approach path. The controls fought me with the heavy resistance of an aircraft flying through rough weather.

The corridor tilted.

Beyond the nearest doorway, a vast silver hull appeared, rushing silently toward us.

“Taviik,” I said, bracing my feet, “your ship is rather more immediate than I’d prefer.”

“Maintain alignment!”

Celeste found the beacon wire.

“Ready.”

The translator blared:

DESTINATION CHANGE REQUIRES RECEIVER CONSENT.

“I consent!” I shouted.

PLEASE SPECIFY AUTHORIZED RECIPIENT.

“The station!”

AMBIGUOUS.

“Oh, now it wants precision,” I muttered.

Celeste snatched up the translator.

“Emergency Relay Seven. Accept vessel Evening Promise. Six hundred and twelve persons aboard. Medical and mechanical assistance required.”

A second voice answered, deep and beautifully calm.

“Berth available. Send them through.”

“Now, John!”

I held the dial steady. Celeste moved the wire.

For one extraordinary heartbeat, our hallway opened onto the interior of an alien ship. Hundreds of frightened faces looked back at us beneath a shattered ceiling of stars.

I raised my free hand.

“Mind the gap.”

Then light thundered through the corridor.

I landed on my back with Celeste half across my chest, one hand still gripping my jacket.

The hallway was short again.

The windows showed weeds.

Somewhere nearby, a completely ordinary pipe dripped water, and I loved it with unreasonable intensity.

“Are you all right?” I asked.

Celeste lifted her head .

“Yes. You?

“I'd like to file a complaint about the landing.”

The radio crackled .

Taviik appeared above it, all four hands raised.

"We're safe. All of us."

Behind him, someone was cheering.

For a few seconds, I couldn't think of anything funny to say.

“Good,” I managed. “That's good.”

Celeste squeezed my hand .

Before the connection closed, Taviik asked whether Earth's rescue agents always worked in bonded pairs.

“Only the fortunate ones,” I told him.

By dawn, the Special Radio was secured at Agent 51's headquarters, and Celeste's notebook contained several new pages. My report contained the sentence The hallway temporarily exceeded the dimensions of the building , which I expected would do very little for my professional reputation.

On her phone, Celeste kept a photograph taken afterward in the parked car: me, still noticeably pale, cradling coffee from a nearby all-night diner as if warmth were a recently rediscovered miracle.

I watched the steam for a long while.

“All right,” I finally admitted. "You win this round. One–nil. But I'm still not signing up for ghosts."

Celeste only smiled and reached over to straighten my jacket collar, the small same, loving adjustment she'd made through seven years of difficult shifts.

I caught her hand and kissed it.

“Aliens, however,” I added, “owe us breakfast.” 🚗💛👽

Here's the thing about marrying a skeptic: they make excellent test subjects.
Celeste had learned that two years ago when John's flashlight died at exactly the wrong second in exactly the wrong place — and instead of panicking, he'd spent the next ten minutes diagnosing the batteries out loud, mid-crisis, because apparently even terror couldn't shut off his need to explain things. She loved him ridiculously for it. She'd also, quietly, started keeping spare batteries in a pocket he didn't know existed.
Tonight, batteries weren't the problem.
"Explain this," she said, holding up the detector. The needle had slammed hard right four minutes ago and hadn't budged since.
"Faulty sensor."
"For four straight minutes?"
"A very committed faulty sensor."
She handed it over. He turned it in his hands, tapped it twice like he was negotiating with a stuck vending machine, and the needle didn't so much as twitch. That's when something above them started to move — slow, deliberate, unmistakably footsteps — across a ceiling that had absolutely no business holding weight.
John looked up. Then at Celeste. Then back up, very slowly, like he was hoping the ceiling might change its mind.
"New theory," he said. "Structural settling."
"Structural settling doesn't walk, John."
"It could. Maybe the building has abandonment issues."
She grabbed his sleeve before his feet could get ahead of his brain — a lifelong pattern, his bravery always arriving about four seconds before his sense did. They backed toward the stairwell instead, and that's when the detector, still in his hand, did something neither of them had a theory for. It started printing.
A curl of paper crept out of a slot that hadn't existed thirty seconds ago, spitting out shaky dot-matrix numbers. Not a message. Not a warning. Coordinates — from a machine that predated GPS by decades.
John went quiet in a very specific way. The quiet of a man watching his entire worldview spring a leak.
"That's not possible," he said, like he was still hoping to be talked out of the paper in his hand.
"I know."
"Machines from the fifties don't print coordinates."
"I know, John."
"I need you to disagree with me. Right now would be great."
"Can't. Already looked them up." She turned her phone toward him. The pin dropped forty feet away — on the far side of a wall that, according to every blueprint on file, had no room behind it.
They ended up at the diner two hours later, both too wired to sleep, both still faintly dusted in drywall. John wrapped both hands around a coffee he had zero intention of drinking, staring at it like it might start printing too.
"I'm not saying I believe in ghosts," he finally said.
"I know."
"I'm saying I believe in a building that disagrees with its own blueprints."
Celeste smiled, reached across the table, and straightened his collar — same move, seven years running, the one that always meant I've got you, whatever it takes.
"Progress," she said. "I'll take it."

THE FREQUENCY OF TRUTH 📻👽
The device beeping inside the suitcase was an old gray radio—one Celeste was certain had not been there when she checked the kit.
Its antenna snapped upright by itself. The tuning dial spun.
Then John’s voice came through the speaker.
“Probably faulty wiring.”
John stared at it. “I didn’t say that.”
“You were about to,” Celeste said.
A second later, he heard himself say, “Probably faulty wiring.”
The radio crackled.
“JOHN IS FRIGHTENED.”
“I am not.”
“JOHN IS LYING.”
Celeste covered a smile. “Can we keep it?”
Every door in the hallway slammed shut.
The flashlights died. Sickly green lamps flickered on one by one, stretching into the distance. At the far end of the corridor stood a shadow shaped like a person—but whenever John moved, it copied him half a second too late.
The radio spoke again.
“WHO ENTERED?”
“Department investigators,” John answered.
The walls groaned inward.
“INCOMPLETE.”
Celeste quietly opened her notebook.
“John and Celeste” she said. “Married seven years. Frequently annoyed with each other.”
The walls stopped.
“Good addition,” John whispered.
The shadow took one step closer.
“WHOM DO YOU TRUST?”
“The evidence,” John said immediately.
The ceiling cracked.
“JOHN IS LYING.”
The shadow rushed forward.
John shoved Celeste behind him and raised the radio as though a device accusing him of dishonesty might somehow double as a weapon.
“Fine!” he shouted. “Her. I trust her.”
Everything froze.
The radio turned toward Celeste in his hands.
“WHOM DO YOU TRUST?”
Celeste reached around John and placed her hand over his.
“Him,” she said. “Especially when he’s terrified and pretending to be scientific.”
The shadow dissolved into a storm of black dust. A door appeared in the blank wall beside them, opening onto the facility’s front steps and the first gray light of morning.
Behind them, the radio gave one final crackle.
In Celeste’s own voice, it whispered:
“Truth verified.”
Then it went silent.
Two hours later, Celeste took a photograph in the car while John, still pale, warmed his hands around coffee from the twenty-four-hour diner.
“Okay,” he said at last. “It’s you one–me zero, but tomorrow’s another day.”
Celeste smiled.
“But that does not mean I believe in ghosts.”
She leaned over and straightened his collar—the same gesture she had made after every difficult shift for seven years.
“No,” she agreed. “You just believe in me.”
John looked down at his coffee.
“That,” he said, “is an entirely different story.”😍❤
