Adventure Quest.  The Laundry - The First Step
https://i.imgur.com/ZFApH6Nm.png

🧦✨ The First Step
📍 Laundry — Where Even Lost Socks Have a Purpose

The sock that landed at Lea's feet was impossible to mistake. It was a cheerful woolen fellow, bright red, with stripes of gold, green, blue, and white, circling its cuff like decorations on a very proud little soldier. Lea had rescued it three weeks earlier, carefully mended its heel, and labeled its box “Red Wool Sock — Awaiting Partner.” Apparently, the sock had grown tired of waiting. Inside it was a folded note describing its latest adventure, along with a photograph of two people laughing under a streetlamp. The man was named Thomas Bell, a forty-year-old widower who had spent three lonely years convincing himself that romance was something belonging to his past. The woman beside him was Clara Whitmore, a cheerful florist whose little shop stood directly across from Thomas's apartment. For two years, Thomas had admired Clara through his window, occasionally buying flowers he didn't need, but never finding the courage to ask her to dinner. His apartment had begun to resemble a botanical garden, and his elderly cat was developing strong objections to the competition.

The previous evening, Thomas had finally decided to invite Clara to the neighborhood autumn festival. He dressed carefully, rehearsed his invitation seventeen times, and stepped outside—only to discover that one of his socks had mysteriously disappeared. In its place lay a ridiculous red wool sock with colorful stripes, completely unsuitable for his elegant black trousers. Thomas searched everywhere, but his missing sock was nowhere to be found. Finally, muttering that no one would notice, he put on the red sock and hurried across the street. Unfortunately, halfway there, the mischievous woolen creature began to creep down his ankle. Thomas stopped to pull it up, lost his balance, and stumbled directly into Clara, who was carrying a large basket of roses. Flowers flew everywhere. Thomas landed on his backside, one trouser leg rode up, and the outrageous red sock stood proudly on display. Clara stared for one astonished second before bursting into laughter. "Thomas! I never suspected you were such a colorful gentleman!" He turned scarlet, then began laughing himself. By the time they finished collecting the roses, Clara had accepted his invitation to the festival—and suggested they might have dinner together afterward. Thomas hadn't felt so wonderfully foolish in years.

Lea finished reading the note with a delighted smile. Then she noticed the second message, embroidered inside the sock in tiny silver letters: "One lonely heart rescued. One more to go. YOUR TURN!" Before Lea could protest, the sock hopped onto the counter and pointed its toe towards the laundry entrance. At that very moment, the little brass bell above the door jingled. In walked Daniel Mercer, a handsome young architect with warm brown eyes, unruly dark hair, and a smile that always made Lea forget which drawer contained the receipts. Every Friday afternoon for nearly four months, Daniel had appeared carrying the same pale-blue shirt, claiming it needed cleaning. The shirt was invariably spotless, beautifully pressed, and suspiciously fragrant. In truth, Daniel washed and ironed it himself every Thursday evening, then brought it to the laundry simply because he couldn't think of another excuse to see Lea. He would linger at the counter, asking about her week, the weather, or whether she thought the bakery down the street made good cinnamon rolls. Lea adored these conversations but was so painfully shy that she usually answered with three words before hiding behind her paperwork.

Today, however, the red sock had other plans. As Daniel approached, it sprang from the counter, landed directly on his shoulder, and slid down the front of his jacket like a woolen acrobat. Daniel caught it just before it reached the floor. "Well!" he exclaimed. "Is this a new express delivery service?" Lea laughed, then gasped as the sock suddenly wriggled from his fingers and disappeared into his jacket pocket. Daniel reached inside and pulled out the sock, along with a tiny folded paper that certainly hadn't been there a moment earlier. It read: "Dear Daniel, a shirt this clean doesn't need washing. A girl this lovely should not have to wait forever. Ask her!" Daniel stared at the message, then at Lea. His ears turned bright red. "I suppose," he admitted, "I've been caught." Lea's heart began to beat like an unbalanced washing machine. "Caught doing what?" she whispered, although she already knew. "Bringing you the cleanest shirt in town," Daniel confessed, "because I couldn't find the courage to ask if you'd have coffee with me."

For one dreadful moment, Lea nearly retreated behind her receipts. But the red sock, now dangling from Daniel's pocket, gave an unmistakable little kick in her direction. She remembered Thomas and Clara, the scattered roses, and the wonderful possibilities that could begin with one ridiculous accident. Taking a deep breath, she stepped out from behind the counter for perhaps the first time in her life without a professional reason. "Actually, Daniel," she said, surprising herself with the steadiness of her voice, "there's something I've wanted to ask you for weeks." Daniel looked hopeful. "Would you like to take me to that little bakery you've mentioned seventeen times? The one with the cinnamon rolls?" Daniel's face lit up. "You counted?" Lea smiled mischievously. "I remember everything my favorite customers tell me." Then, gathering every remaining ounce of courage, she reached for his hand. "And Daniel? Next Friday, please leave this poor shirt at home." He laughed. "Does that mean I can come without an excuse?" "It means," Lea replied, squeezing his fingers, "I'd be very disappointed if you didn't."

📸🧦✨Daniel tucked the photograph of Thomas and Clara into his pocket as a keepsake of the strangest and happiest Friday of his life, while the adventurous red sock was returned to its carefully labeled box. Throughout the afternoon, the other missing socks began to reappear one by one—rumpled, dusty, occasionally smelling of perfume or fresh pastries, and looking remarkably pleased with themselves. Lea tucked them all safely into their little resting place, closed the drawer, and removed her work apron. Daniel was waiting outside, holding two cinnamon rolls in a paper bag and wearing the most hopeful smile she'd ever seen. "I'll just give it a try," Lea whispered to herself. "I'm not promising anything...yet." From inside the drawer came a soft, approving rustle, followed by what sounded suspiciously like several tiny woolen feet applauding. Lea laughed, straightened her shoulders, and hurried through the door to take Daniel's waiting hand. Behind her, the lonely socks settled comfortably in their box. Their shy guardian had finally discovered what they had known all along: sometimes finding the perfect match requires losing something first—even if it's only your fear of taking the first step. 🫧🧦❤

💚 PART ONE — DeNae
🧦✨ THE GREAT SOCK REBELLION
Or: How I Lost My Saturday to a Bunch of Laundry

There are three things I believe should never be complicated.

Laundry.

Lunch.

And Saturday afternoon cocktails.

Unfortunately, my younger sister Tara has a remarkable talent for turning all three into international incidents.

It started at 10:15 Saturday morning.

We were supposed to drop off a few things at the Mystery Manor laundry, pick up my freshly pressed emerald-green blouse, and head to brunch.

Reservations at eleven.

Mimosas at eleven-oh-five.

A perfectly reasonable plan.

Then Tara spotted something.

“Ohhhhh, DeNae!”

I stopped walking.

That particular ohhhhh has cost me approximately seventeen peaceful weekends, two pairs of shoes, and possibly several years of my life.

“What?”

She pointed at a little sign hanging crookedly beside the laundry door.

MISSING SOCKS. PLEASE INQUIRE WITHIN.

“No.”

“You don't even know what I'm going to say!”

“Yes, I do. You're going to tell me there's something mysterious happening with the socks.”

She adjusted her ridiculous, bejeweled tinfoil tiara.

“Actually, I was going to say there's probably a secret interdimensional portal in the dryer.”

“Of course you were.”

And that, dear friends, was the last moment Saturday had any hope of being normal.

🫧 THE GIRL WHO SAVED SOCKS

Behind the counter stood Leah, a sweet young woman with soft brown hair, a pale blue apron, and the sort of shy smile that made you immediately want to hug her.

She was staring into an empty wooden drawer.

“Oh dear,” she whispered.

Tara practically levitated across the room.

“WHAT'S MISSING?”

Leah jumped.

I apologized.

Again.

Apparently, Leah collected orphaned socks.

Not for any particularly strange reason.

She simply couldn't bear throwing them away.

She washed them, repaired holes, carefully labeled each one with the date it had been found, and tucked them into a special drawer.

“Everyone deserves to be waited for,” she said quietly.

Well.

That was rather lovely.

Even Tara stopped talking for approximately four seconds.

But last night, every single sock had vanished.

Thirty-seven socks.

No broken locks.

No open windows.

No suspicious visitors.

Just thirty-seven missing socks.

Naturally, Tara pulled out her handy-dandy journal.

“Thirty-seven,” she whispered. “An interesting number.”

“It's a laundry problem, Tara. Not a government cover-up.”

“You don't KNOW that.”

I checked my watch.

10:24.

Then something went PLOP.

A long, lavender, knee-length sock dropped out of the laundry chute.

It was covered in silver dust.

It was warm.

And it was standing upright.

On its toe.

Like a tiny purple flamingo.

“Oh, absolutely not,” I said.

Tara gasped.

“IT'S ALIVE!”

The sock took two little hops.

Bowed.

And dramatically collapsed.

Leah squeaked.

I looked at the ceiling.

“I'm going to need a much larger mimosa.”

🧦 SIR HOPS-A-LOT

The sock had a tiny silver note stitched to its cuff.

Tara read aloud.

“We don't get lost. We go to those who are afraid to take the first step.”

Then the sock stood up again.

Turned toward me.

And kicked me in the ankle.

“EXCUSE ME?”

It kicked me again.

Tara laughed so hard she had to grab the counter.

“Oh, DeNae! It likes you!”

“It's assaulting me.”

The sock bounced toward Leah.

Leah carefully opened its folded cuff and removed a tiny note.

Inside was a handwritten message:

“Last night, Mr. Arthur Bell finally crossed the street.”

Leah's eyes widened.

“Arthur?”

She told us about an elderly gentleman who visited the laundry every Thursday.

For months, Arthur had watched a woman named Rose arranging flowers in the shop across the street.

He adored her.

He had even bought flowers from her.

For himself.

Six times.

He was so painfully shy that he'd never managed to ask her to have coffee.

“And last night?” Tara asked.

Leah smiled.

“He finally did.”

“WITH THE SOCK'S HELP?” Tara squealed.

The lavender sock puffed itself up proudly.

Then performed what I can only describe as a victory cartwheel.

I rubbed my temples.

“Great. Matchmaking hosiery. That's new.”

But then Leah read the bottom of the note.

“Now it's your turn, Leah.”

Her face turned bright pink.

She immediately folded the note, tucked it beneath the counter, and pretended to organize receipts.

Ahhh.

Now THIS was interesting.

I know that look.

That is the international expression for I have a secret, and I would rather wrestle an alligator than discuss it.

Tara leaned toward me.

“She's in love.”

“Maybe.”

“With the sock?”

“TARA.”

🌀 THE SPIN CYCLE OF DOOM

Before we could ask another question, every washing machine in the room switched on.

By itself.

The dryers began spinning backward.

Soap bubbles rose from the floor.

And the thirty-seven little brass labels inside Leah's empty drawer started glowing.

A voice boomed from somewhere inside the largest washing machine.

“THE FIRST STEP MUST BE TAKEN!”

Tara threw both arms into the air.

“I KNEW IT! MAGIC LAUNDRY!”

A towering figure rose from the swirling bubbles.

It wore a crown of clothespins.

A cape made of dryer sheets.

And one enormous fuzzy slipper.

“I AM THE GRAND KEEPER OF THE FORGOTTEN!”

I stared.

It stared back.

Tara whispered, “He's magnificent.”

“He's a laundry hamper with an ego.”

The Grand Keeper pointed a long wooden clothespin at Leah.

“THE KEEPER OF LOST SOCKS HAS FORGOTTEN HER OWN DREAM!”

Leah gasped.

“No! I haven't forgotten!”

“THEN WHY HAVE YOU NOT TAKEN THE FIRST STEP?”

She looked toward a small, folded paper tucked beneath the cash register.

I gently reached for it.

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

It was a beautiful hand-drawn advertisement.

LEAH'S LITTLE MENDING SHOP
Repairs, alterations, handmade treasures, and a little kindness stitched into everything.[/center]

Underneath was a rental notice for a tiny vacant storefront.

Directly beside the flower shop.

Leah had been dreaming of opening her own business for years.

She'd saved money.

Made plans.

Designed her sign.

But she'd never worked up the courage to actually apply for the space.

“What if nobody comes?” she whispered.

I recognized that fear.

Starting something of your own can be terrifying.

I put my hand over hers.

“Honey, you can spend your whole life wondering what might happen. Or you can give yourself a chance to find out.”

She smiled.

Then the Grand Keeper cleared his throat.

“THERE IS ONE SMALL COMPLICATION.”

Of course there was.

The lavender sock began shaking violently.

All thirty-seven brass labels shot into the air.

The washing machines started rattling.

And a giant glowing doorway appeared inside Dryer Number Four.

Beyond it stretched an impossible moonlit city made entirely of fabric.

Towering quilts.

Bridges woven from yarn.

Glittering rivers of liquid silver.

And thousands of tiny socks marching in formation.

Tara slowly turned toward me.

Her green eyes sparkled.

“Ohhhhh, DeNae…”

“No.”

“WE HAVE TO GO IN.”

“No, we absolutely do not.”

From inside the dryer came a dreadful little scream.

“HELP! THE SOCK-EATER HAS AWAKENED!”

The Grand Keeper dropped his clothespin.

“Without the First Step, the Lost Sock Kingdom will unravel!”

Tara was already climbing into the dryer.

I checked my watch.

10:47.

Brunch was officially doomed.

I grabbed my purse, Leah grabbed her apron, and I climbed in after my sister.

“If one single sock touches my hair,” I announced, “I'm burning this entire laundry room down.”

The dryer door slammed shut.

And we fell straight into a tornado of flying underwear.

💜 PART TWO — Tara
🧦✨ THE KINGDOM OF LOST SOLES
Or: Why My Sister Should Never Underestimate the Power of a Knee-Length Sock

I have always suspected that socks don’t actually disappear in the dryer.

They relocate.

Possibly through wormholes.

Possibly through ancient magical portals.

Possibly because they’ve grown tired of being shoved into uncomfortable shoes.

Today, I WAS VINDICATED.

And naturally, DeNae was being very unsupportive.

“TARA! GET YOUR FOOT OUT OF MY FACE!”

We were tumbling through a glittering cyclone of scarves, mittens, and underwear.

A pair of polka-dot boxer shorts floated majestically past.

DeNae grabbed them.

“WHOSE ARE THESE?”

“Probably classified.”

“YOU’RE CLASSIFIED.”

Then we landed.

WHUMP.

Right in the middle of a gigantic mountain of freshly folded towels.

It was surprisingly comfortable.

I made a note in my handy-dandy journal.

Observation #1: Interdimensional travel through laundry appliances is considerably softer than expected.

DeNae was picking lint out of her hair.

“I hate this place.”

“You’ve only been here eleven seconds!”

“Eleven seconds too long.”

✨ WELCOME TO SOCKTOPIA

Before us stretched the most spectacular kingdom I had ever seen.

Castles made of folded blankets.

Towering mountains of colorful sweaters.

Clouds of floating soap bubbles.

And winding roads of beautifully braided yarn.

Thousands of socks wandered happily through the streets.

Some wore tiny hats.

Some had bells.

Some were carrying briefcases.

One very distinguished argyle sock was walking a miniature poodle made entirely of dryer lint.

I gasped.

“DENAE! LOOK!”

She looked.

The poodle sneezed glitter.

“No.”

“Yes!”

“No.”

“WE ARE IN SOCKTOPIA!”

A tiny striped sock wearing spectacles approached.

“Welcome, travelers. I am Professor Purl, Royal Historian of the Unpaired.”

He bowed.

The lavender knee-length sock beside Leah bowed too.

Then fell over.

“Is he okay?” Leah asked.

Professor Purl sighed.

“Sir Hops-a-Lot has always been dramatic.”

“I KNEW HE HAD A NAME!” I shouted.

DeNae folded her arms.

“Wonderful. The hosiery has a social hierarchy.”

Professor Purl explained that every lost sock in the human world eventually found its way to Socktopia.

But they weren’t really lost.

They were chosen.

Whenever someone needed a little courage, a sock traveled back through the magical laundry portals to help.

Sometimes it nudged someone toward a conversation.

Sometimes it led them to a new friend.

Sometimes it simply appeared at the right moment to remind a lonely person that they mattered.

Sir Hops-a-Lot had spent last night helping Arthur Bell.

Arthur had been standing outside Rose’s flower shop for twenty minutes, clutching a handwritten invitation to coffee.

Sir Hops-a-Lot escaped from the laundry, bounced down the sidewalk, and wrapped himself around Arthur’s shoe.

Arthur stumbled.

Dropped his invitation.

And Rose stepped outside to pick it up.

When she read it, she smiled.

“Arthur, I’ve been hoping you’d ask.”

He blushed.

She blushed.

The sock performed a backflip into a flowerpot.

And apparently, they were meeting for coffee this afternoon.

I sighed happily.

“TRUE LOVE!”

DeNae nodded.

“Okay. That’s actually adorable.”

I stared at her.

“Are you having a feeling?”

“Don’t ruin it.”

🧦 THE TERRIBLE SOCK-EATER

Suddenly, the ground shook.

A dreadful roar rolled across the kingdom.

From behind a mountain of mismatched mittens emerged a monstrous creature.

Sixteen feet tall.

Covered in tangled yarn.

With enormous button eyes, zipper teeth, and a belly stuffed with missing socks.

THE SOCK-EATER.

I immediately opened my journal.

“Observation Number Two—”

“TARA! RUN FIRST, WRITE LATER!”

The creature roared.

“NOOOOOO FIRST STEPS!”

It stomped toward us.

Every sock in the village scattered.

Professor Purl dove behind a sweater.

Sir Hops-a-Lot fainted.

Again.

Leah trembled.

“What does it want?”

Professor Purl peeked over the sweater.

“The Sock-Eater feeds on unfinished dreams!”

“Of course,” DeNae muttered. “Why couldn’t it eat dryer lint like a normal monster?”

“It grows stronger every time a person decides not to try,” Professor Purl explained. “Every abandoned plan. Every unsent letter. Every dream left in a drawer.”

Leah looked down at her little folded advertisement.

“Oh,” she whispered.

The creature turned toward her.

Its button eyes glowed.

“YOU WILL FAIL!”

Leah stepped backward.

“NOBODY WILL COME!”

She shrank further.

“YOUR DREAM IS SILLY!”

DeNae had apparently heard enough.

She marched right up to the enormous monster.

“NOW LISTEN HERE, YOU OVERSTUFFED PILLOWCASE!”

I clapped.

This was getting GOOD.

“You do not get to tell this girl what she’s capable of!”

The creature blinked.

“BUT—”

“AND ANOTHER THING! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH COURAGE IT TAKES TO START A BUSINESS?”

The monster actually took a step backward.

I whispered to Leah, “That’s my big sister. She’s terrifying when she’s practical.”

But the Sock-Eater had one final trick.

It opened its enormous zipper mouth.

And inhaled.

All the courage in the room began swirling toward it.

Leah’s advertisement flew from her hands.

Professor Purl’s spectacles disappeared.

DeNae’s purse shot into the air.

“OH, THAT IS IT!” DeNae shouted. “MY PURSE IS NOT PART OF THIS ADVENTURE!”

I grabbed Sir Hops-a-Lot.

He stood upright in my hands.

His silver stitching began glowing.

Then I understood.

“The socks don’t GIVE people courage!” I shouted.

Professor Purl gasped.

“Precisely!”

“They just help people discover the courage they already have!”

I turned to Leah.

“YOU DON’T HAVE TO KNOW HOW THE STORY ENDS TO BEGIN IT!”

Sir Hops-a-Lot leaped from my arms.

He bounced straight toward the monster.

The Sock-Eater opened its terrible mouth.

And swallowed him whole.

“NOOOOOO!” Leah cried.

My heart dropped.

DeNae whispered, “Oh, that little idiot.”

Then, deep inside the monster’s belly…

A tiny purple glow appeared.

Followed by a muffled voice.

“ONE SMALL STEP!”

The monster shuddered.

Its zipper teeth rattled.

And Leah suddenly straightened.

“No,” she said softly.

The Sock-Eater froze.

She took one step forward.

“I might fail.”

The monster smiled.

“But I might succeed.”

Its smile vanished.

“And I will never know unless I try.”

She took another step.

“I am going to open my shop.”

A crack of golden light split the monster’s belly.

“I am going to put my name on the door.”

Another crack.

“And I am going to ask for the things I want instead of waiting for someone to guess.”

The Sock-Eater shrieked.

Leah took one final step.

“I’M GOING TO TRY!”

BOOOOOOOM!

The monster exploded.

Not into anything dreadful.

Into approximately forty-seven thousand soft, fluffy, magically sparkling socks.

It was glorious.

It was beautiful.

It was—

“MY PURSE!” DeNae screamed.

A black handbag sailed through the sky and landed perfectly on her head.

I fell over laughing.

🌷 THE FIRST STEP

When the magical sock storm finally settled, Professor Purl gave us a little silver key.

“Your way home,” he explained.

He gestured toward a glowing dryer door.

“One act of courage can change a life. Sometimes two.”

Leah smiled.

DeNae narrowed her eyes.

“Two?”

Professor Purl gave me a knowing wink.

I made another note in my journal.

Observation #3: Magical socks know things. Investigate later.

Sir Hops-a-Lot hopped into Leah’s arms.

She hugged him.

“You really did come back for me.”

He gently tapped her cheek with his toe.

And together, we stepped through the dryer door.

WHOOSH!

We landed back in the Manor laundry room.

Every machine was quiet.

Every brass label was back in place.

And one by one, little socks began dropping down the chute.

A red one.

A striped one.

A fuzzy yellow one.

A tiny sock with a hole in its heel.

Thirty-seven in all.

All slightly dusty.

All wonderfully happy.

Leah carefully returned them to their labeled drawer.

Then she removed her apron.

Smoothed her dress.

And picked up the advertisement for her little mending shop.

“I’ll just try,” she whispered. “That doesn’t promise anything yet.”

From inside the drawer came an approving rustle.

Sir Hops-a-Lot lifted his toe in a tiny salute.

Leah smiled.

Then she walked out the door.

🥂 EPILOGUE — COURAGE, COFFEE, AND ONE VERY SUSPICIOUS SOCK

By the time we reached the street, Arthur and Rose were sitting outside the flower shop.

Together.

Holding hands.

I nearly exploded with happiness.

“DENAE! LOOK! THE SOCK DID IT!”

“Please don’t shout about the romantic accomplishments of laundry in public.”

Leah crossed the street, took a deep breath, and went into the little vacant shop next door.

We watched through the window as she spoke with the landlord.

She showed him her drawings.

He showed her the space.

And a few minutes later, he handed her an application.

She grinned from ear to ear.

DeNae smiled.

A genuine, warm, big-sister smile.

“Good for her.”

I leaned against her.

“You know, this was a really wonderful adventure.”

She checked her watch.

12:43.

“Our brunch reservation is gone.”

“We saved a kingdom!”

“We missed mimosas.”

“We defeated a monster!”

“We missed eggs Benedict.”

“We helped a sweet girl follow her dream!”

DeNae sighed.

“Fine. I’ll admit it. That part was worth it.”

I beamed.

“SO! Should we go back and see if the dryers lead anywhere else?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Maybe there’s an entire civilization of missing earrings!”

“No.”

“Or hair ties!”

“No.”

“OR THE LOST LIDS OF TUPPERWARE!”

DeNae stopped.

Slowly turned.

And looked at me.

For one glorious moment, I saw the spark.

The curiosity.

The possibility.

Then she shook her head.

“Don’t even think about it.”

Too late.

I was already writing in my journal.

NEW MYSTERY: WHERE DO ALL THE TUPPERWARE LIDS GO?

DeNae started walking toward the restaurant.

“Come on, Your Royal Sockness. We’re getting lunch.”

And that’s when I noticed something strange.

Inside my purse…

Nestled between my handy-dandy journal and my emergency tiara-polishing cloth…

Was one small, lavender, knee-length sock.

Sir Hops-a-Lot.

He gave me a wink.

Then pulled out a tiny silver note.

“Some first steps lead to very big adventures.”

I looked toward the Manor.

The laundry room window shimmered purple.

Somewhere deep inside the walls, a washing machine giggled.

I grinned.

“Ohhhhh, DeNae…”

From halfway down the street came her unmistakable reply:

“WHATEVER IT IS, THE ANSWER IS NO!”

Well.

We’ll just see about that.

🧦✨👑 THE END 👑✨🧦

At least until the next load of laundry.

🌊🏆 THE OLYMPIAD OF IMPOSSIBLE ODDS
An Absolutely Unauthorized Mystery Manor Adventure

PART ONE — DeNae: The Pool Was Supposed to Be Relaxing 🍹🔱

There are certain things a woman should be able to count on.

The sun rising in the east.

Chocolate being a perfectly reasonable breakfast.

And a swimming pool remaining an ordinary swimming pool for at least ONE afternoon.

Apparently, the Mystery Manor had a problem with all three.

It started at 2:17 p.m.

I remember because I'd arranged two lounge chairs, ordered a pitcher of something fruity, and informed my younger sister that absolutely NOTHING was interrupting our afternoon.

Tara was sitting beside me wearing oversized sunglasses, a purple swimsuit, and her ridiculous bejeweled tiara.

She was writing in her Handy Dandy Journal.

"Why are you taking notes?" I asked.

"Research."

"On what?"

"The pool."

"It's water, Tara."

"That's what it WANTS you to think."

I closed my eyes.

This was already going badly.

Then something enormous splashed beneath the surface.

Not a swimmer.

Not a fish.

Something that sounded suspiciously like a horse.

Tara lowered her sunglasses.

"DeNae."

"No."

"I think—"

"Absolutely not."

"There's a SEAHORSE in the deep end!"

Naturally, I looked.

There, emerging from the water, was a magnificent seahorse approximately the size of a refrigerator.

It wore a gold harness, a tiny ceremonial helmet, and an expression of professional exhaustion.

Behind it floated a scroll.

The seahorse cleared its throat.

"BY DECREE OF OLYMPUS—"

I held up one finger.

"Is this going to take long? We ordered drinks."

The creature blinked.

Tara was already standing.

"OLYMPUS?! As in THE Olympus?!"

The seahorse unrolled its scroll.

"His Supreme Aquatic Magnificence, Poseidon, Lord of the Seven Seas, Master of the Tides, Sovereign of All Things Damp—"

"Oh, good grief," I muttered.

"—hereby summons two mortal witnesses to the Centennial Olympiad!"

Tara gasped.

"WE'VE BEEN INVITED TO THE OLYMPICS!"

"We have been kidnapped by a fish with paperwork."

The seahorse looked offended.

"I am a royal herald."

"Wonderful. Tell your king we're busy."

Unfortunately, Tara had already touched the scroll.

The pool turned GOLD.

The lounge chairs vanished.

My fruity drink disappeared.

And the entire world flipped upside down.

I grabbed Tara's arm.

"TARA!"

"THIS IS AMAZING!"

"MY COCKTAIL!"

And then we fell straight through the bottom of the pool.

✨🌊✨

We landed in a magnificent celestial arena suspended among the clouds.

Marble columns towered around an enormous turquoise swimming pool. Golden banners fluttered in a breeze that smelled like sea salt and thunderstorms.

Thousands of mythical creatures filled the stands.

Mermaids waved flags.

Nymphs tossed flower petals.

A centaur sold popcorn.

And sitting on a ridiculously oversized throne was a muscular, bearded man wearing a shimmering blue robe and holding a golden trident.

Poseidon.

Beside his throne stood a display shelf with five empty spaces.

Each space was labeled:

FASTEST SWIMMER.
GREATEST STRENGTH.
MOST GRACEFUL PERFORMANCE.
ULTIMATE ENDURANCE.
DEEPEST DIVER.

And directly beneath them stood five magnificent golden statues.

Every single one looked like Poseidon.

Tara stared.

"Well, SOMEBODY thinks highly of himself."

"Apparently humility drowned."

A booming voice thundered across the arena.

"THE MORTAL WITNESSES HAVE ARRIVED!"

On the judges' platform sat Zeus, wearing a crown of lightning and the expression of a man already regretting his family reunion.

Beside him stood Athena, Hermes, Apollo, and Ares.

Poseidon rose grandly.

"Welcome, mortals, to the greatest aquatic competition in the history of Olympus!"

Tara waved.

"HI! I'M TARA! THIS IS DENAE! SHE'S VERY GOOD WITH MONEY AND BAD DECISIONS!"

I stared at her.

"Whose bad decisions?"

"Mostly mine."

"At least we're establishing that."

Zeus stood.

"Before the games begin, I shall remind everyone of the rules. NO divine powers."

Poseidon frowned.

"An absurd restriction."

"No control over water," Zeus continued.

"No lightning," Poseidon countered.

"I AM THE JUDGE!"

"And that's exactly why I mentioned it."

Athena rolled her eyes.

Hermes laughed.

Apollo examined his reflection in the water.

Ares cracked his knuckles so loudly that three mermaids ducked.

Tara leaned toward me.

"This is the best family dysfunction I've ever witnessed."

"And we've attended Thanksgiving."

✨🏆✨

The games began.

Hermes won the speed race.

Apparently being naturally athletic was still an advantage, even without magical sandals.

Athena won the endurance challenge by calculating the perfect swimming rhythm.

Ares won the strength competition by dragging a stone anchor across the pool floor.

Apollo won the graceful-performance competition with a spectacular dive involving three somersaults and entirely too much hair flipping.

Four statues were awarded.

Four golden Poseidons were carried away by other gods.

Poseidon's face turned increasingly red.

His previously prepared shelf remained EMPTY.

Tara scribbled furiously in her journal.

"Observation number seventeen: Never order trophies before winning."

"Write that in larger letters."

Poseidon slammed his trident against the marble.

"THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!"

Zeus smiled.

"Only one competition remains."

The arena fell silent.

Athena approached the edge of the pool.

"The Deep Diver."

At the bottom of the celestial pool, far deeper than any ordinary pool could possibly reach, a glowing golden figure appeared.

It was the fifth statue.

Poseidon himself, holding a trident and surrounded by tiny golden waves.

Athena explained the challenge.

"The competitors must descend into the Abyssal Chamber, retrieve the Deep Diver statue, and return to the surface. No magic. No assistance from the water. Only skill, judgment, and courage."

Poseidon smiled confidently.

Then his opponent stepped forward.

Athena.

Tara gasped.

"OH! THE GODDESS OF WISDOM VERSUS THE GOD OF WET STUFF!"

Poseidon crossed his arms.

"She cannot defeat me in my own element."

Athena smiled.

"Your element? You mean the one you aren't allowed to control?"

I actually laughed.

Poseidon did not.

Then the entire arena shook.

Far beneath the glowing statue, an enormous shadow moved.

Something ancient.

Something alive.

Something with far too many tentacles.

The seahorse herald suddenly looked nervous.

"Your Majesties, we may have a small problem."

The shadow opened one golden eye.

Then another.

Then six more.

Tara grabbed my hand.

"DeNae! IT'S AN ABYSSAL GUARDIAN!"

I stared at the creature.

Then at the pool.

Then at Zeus.

"Does ANYONE around here believe in safety inspections?!"

Athena examined the water.

"The guardian should be asleep."

Poseidon looked away.

Zeus slowly turned toward his brother.

"POSEIDON."

"What?"

"WHAT DID YOU PUT IN MY POOL?"

"A perfectly harmless ancient sea creature."

The creature roared.

The entire arena trembled.

Poseidon reconsidered.

"Mostly harmless."

And then the golden Deep Diver statue vanished into the creature's enormous mouth.

Tara's eyes lit up.

I recognized that expression.

It was the same expression she wore immediately before buying something ridiculous, investigating something dangerous, or announcing a plan that would ruin my afternoon.

She opened her journal.

"I HAVE AN IDEA!"

I closed my eyes.

"Of course you do."

She grinned.

"WE'RE GOING DIVING!"

And somewhere in the distance, my perfectly good poolside cocktail officially became a lost cause.

🌊🏆 THE OLYMPIAD OF IMPOSSIBLE ODDS
An Absolutely Unauthorized Mystery Manor Adventure

PART TWO — Tara: The Deep End of Divine Disaster 👑🌊🏆

There are moments in life when destiny calls.

Sometimes it whispers.

Sometimes it sings.

And sometimes it arrives disguised as an eight-eyed sea monster swallowing a golden statue while your older sister threatens to invoice the Greek gods for emotional damages.

Personally, I prefer the third option.

Much more interesting.

I flipped open my Handy Dandy Journal.

ENTRY #418: THE OLYMPIAN POOL INCIDENT

Known facts:

1. Greek gods are VERY competitive.
2. Poseidon has an unhealthy relationship with miniature versions of himself.
3. Zeus needs anger management.
4. DeNae needs a cocktail.
5. There is a GIANT MONSTER IN THE POOL.

I underlined number five.

Twice.

"DeNae, I think we've discovered the real challenge!"

"No, Tara. We've discovered why sensible people stay in the shallow end."

Athena approached us.

"The Abyssal Guardian has awakened. It is drawn to the magic within the golden statue."

Poseidon looked horrified.

"MY TROPHY!"

I patted his arm.

"Don't worry, Your Wetness. We'll get your tiny golden self back."

DeNae coughed.

"Your WHAT?"

"Your Wetness. It's a title."

"It absolutely is not."

Poseidon looked as though he wanted to turn us both into jellyfish.

Unfortunately for him, divine powers were still forbidden.

HA!

I love a good loophole.

✨🔱✨

Athena explained that the guardian was called Thalassor, a creature older than many of the gods themselves.

He lived in the deepest trenches of the celestial ocean.

Normally, he slept for a thousand years at a time.

Unfortunately, Poseidon's incredibly shiny golden trophies had disturbed his slumber.

"So," DeNae said slowly, "this entire disaster happened because you commissioned five statues of yourself?"

Poseidon straightened.

"They are commemorative works of art."

"They're gold-plated vanity."

I wrote that down.

Excellent quote.

Meanwhile, Zeus declared that the competition would continue.

Athena and Poseidon would have to retrieve the statue without divine assistance.

There was just one tiny problem.

Nobody knew how deep the Abyssal Chamber actually was.

That's when I noticed something glittering beside the pool.

An old-fashioned diving helmet.

A coil of rope.

And a tiny silver whistle.

Naturally, I picked up the whistle.

DeNae grabbed my wrist.

"DO. NOT. BLOW. THAT."

"But—"

"Tara."

"It could be magical!"

"EVERYTHING HERE IS MAGICAL!"

I blew it.

Obviously.

A dozen tiny seahorses immediately shot out of the pool and began performing synchronized backflips.

Hermes fell off his chair laughing.

Apollo applauded.

Zeus looked ready to retire.

DeNae stared at me.

"What?"

I shrugged.

"Okay. Not useful. But adorable."

Then Poseidon did something unexpected.

He laughed.

Not his booming, arrogant, king-of-every-ocean laugh.

A real laugh.

And for the first time, I noticed that beneath all the bluster, the sea god looked worried.

He stared into the dark water.

"I haven't entered those depths without my powers in centuries."

Athena folded her arms.

"Then perhaps it's time you remembered how."

✨🌊✨

The diving challenge began.

Athena entered first.

She used a weighted diving bell, calculated the water currents, and carefully mapped the safest route downward.

Very clever.

Very organized.

Extremely DeNae.

Poseidon followed using a second bell.

Without his powers, he couldn't command the currents or order the sea creatures to move aside.

For the first time in centuries, the ocean wasn't obeying him.

He had to LISTEN to it.

DeNae watched the glowing observation pool.

"He's descending too quickly."

I blinked.

"How do you know?"

"Look at the rope. He's not controlling his speed."

"You're secretly an underwater genius!"

"I'm a woman who understands gravity."

On the magical viewing surface, Athena reached the chamber first.

But the guardian was curled around the stolen statue.

Eight golden eyes watched her.

She tried a clever distraction using mirrored light.

Thalassor ignored it.

She calculated a route behind him.

He blocked it.

She attempted to retrieve the statue with a mechanical hook.

He swallowed the hook.

Athena was running out of options.

Then Poseidon arrived.

And did something none of us expected.

He stopped.

Instead of charging forward or demanding obedience, he simply watched the creature.

The guardian's enormous tentacles trembled.

Its breathing was shallow.

And one of its eyes kept closing.

Poseidon noticed a thick, ancient chain wrapped tightly around one of Thalassor's tentacles.

The creature wasn't attacking because it was angry.

It was frightened.

And in pain.

"Ohhhh," I whispered.

DeNae nodded.

"Now he's paying attention."

Poseidon removed the hook from his diving equipment.

Carefully, without using a single drop of magic, he began loosening the chain.

One link.

Then another.

Thalassor thrashed.

Poseidon held steady.

Athena moved closer, ready to help if the guardian attacked.

But Poseidon raised his hand.

Not to command the water.

Not to summon a wave.

Just to reassure the enormous creature.

Slowly, the chain slipped free.

The guardian's tentacle relaxed.

And from the depths came a low, beautiful sound.

Almost like a whale singing.

Thalassor opened all eight eyes.

Then gently placed the golden statue into Poseidon's hands.

I SCREAMED.

"HE DID IT! HE MADE FRIENDS WITH THE MONSTER!"

DeNae smiled.

"Turns out even sea gods can learn to be nice."

Athena looked at Poseidon.

Then at the freed creature.

And nodded.

She had reached the guardian first.

But Poseidon had accomplished something her calculations couldn't.

He understood the creature.

And he had earned its trust.

✨🏆✨

When they returned to the surface, the entire arena erupted.

Mermaids cheered.

Nymphs tossed flowers.

The centaur selling popcorn abandoned his cart and started dancing.

Zeus stood.

"By the rules of the Olympiad, victory in the Deep Diver challenge goes to POSEIDON!"

Poseidon emerged from the water carrying his golden statue.

Water dripped from his beard.

His ceremonial robe was ruined.

His hair looked like seaweed.

He had never looked happier.

Athena extended her hand.

"Well earned."

Poseidon shook it.

"Your strategy was brilliant."

"Your understanding of the guardian was better."

I practically melted.

"DE NAE! CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!"

"Don't get excited. He still has four statues of himself missing."

Zeus approached Poseidon.

"Do you finally understand that true mastery does not depend upon controlling the elements?"

Poseidon considered this.

"Of course."

Everyone smiled.

"It depends upon knowing exactly when NOT to control them."

Athena raised one eyebrow.

Then Poseidon added, "And preferably having a much more impressive beard than your opponent."

There he was.

Our arrogant sea god was back.

🤣🔱

Zeus ordered the golden statue placed on Poseidon's shelf.

One tiny golden Poseidon.

Four empty spaces.

Poseidon stared at it with obvious pride.

"Only one?" Zeus teased.

"One earned honestly," Athena replied.

I smiled.

That was important.

Even if the trophy looked like a miniature aquatic bodybuilder.

Then Poseidon turned toward us.

"You two mortals have been most… unusual."

"Thank you!" I said.

"That wasn't necessarily praise," DeNae whispered.

Poseidon raised his trident.

"For your assistance, you shall each receive a gift."

My heart raced.

A magical pearl?

A golden crown?

A pet seahorse?!

He handed DeNae a beautiful silver seashell.

"Whenever you open this shell, it shall produce the finest refreshment your heart desires."

DeNae stared.

Then opened it.

A perfectly chilled tropical cocktail appeared.

With a tiny umbrella.

And TWO cherries.

She looked at Poseidon.

Then at her drink.

Then back at Poseidon.

"I take back approximately forty percent of the things I said about you."

Poseidon beamed.

Then he turned toward me.

"And for you, Tara…"

He placed a tiny glowing pearl in my palm.

"This pearl allows you to hear the voices of the ocean."

I gasped.

"LIKE MERMAIDS?!"

"Yes."

"DOLPHINS?!"

"Yes."

"ANCIENT SEA CREATURES?!"

"Yes."

"UNDERWATER ALIENS?!"

Poseidon hesitated.

DeNae groaned.

"Please don't encourage her."

Poseidon leaned closer.

And whispered:

"Some mysteries are better left beneath the waves."

OH.

MY.

STARS.

I KNEW IT.

I KNEW IT!

I immediately opened my Handy Dandy Journal and wrote:

CONFIRMED: POSEIDON KNOWS ABOUT THE UNDERWATER ALIENS.

DeNae stole my pen.

✨👑✨

The games finally ended.

Zeus stood and raised his hand.

"The Olympiad is concluded! Divine powers may now be restored!"

Lightning flashed.

The celestial clouds shimmered.

Poseidon's trident glowed brilliant blue.

And without warning—

SPLAAAAAASH!

An enormous wave rose from the pool and crashed directly over Zeus.

His crown spun sideways.

His robes dripped.

His magnificent white beard hung like a wet mop.

The entire arena went SILENT.

Poseidon calmly adjusted his robe.

"Accident."

Hermes snorted.

Apollo covered his mouth.

Athena looked skyward.

DeNae took a long sip of her cocktail.

I laughed so hard I nearly swallowed my tiara.

Zeus slowly turned toward his brother.

"POSEIDON!"

But before the next family argument could begin, the royal seahorse appeared beside us.

"Your mortal visit has concluded."

The floor shimmered.

The clouds dissolved.

And suddenly—

We were back at the Mystery Manor pool.

Our lounge chairs were exactly where we'd left them.

The sun was still shining.

My journal was dry.

DeNae still held her magical cocktail.

And the clock read…

2:18 p.m.

ONE MINUTE.

The entire Olympiad had taken ONE MINUTE.

DeNae stared at the clock.

Then at me.

Then at her drink.

"Well."

I grinned.

"Best pool day EVER!"

She settled into her lounge chair.

"Nobody moves. Nobody touches anything glowing. Nobody investigates suspicious splashing."

"Agreed!"

I sat down beside her.

For exactly seven seconds.

Then my magical pearl began to glow.

A tiny voice whispered from inside it.

"Princess Tara… we have been expecting you."

I froze.

Princess?

Expecting ME?

From the OCEAN?!

I slowly turned toward DeNae.

"DeNae…"

"No."

"But—"

"NO."

"I think the underwater aliens know my NAME."

DeNae put on her sunglasses.

Took another sip.

And said the most beautiful words I've ever heard from my practical older sister:

"Fine. But next time, we're bringing snacks."

I smiled.

Somewhere beneath the Mystery Manor pool, something enormous blinked.

And I opened my Handy Dandy Journal.

ENTRY #419: THE UNDERWATER CONSPIRACY HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN.

🌊🔱 The Small Sea with Sides 🏆
📍 Pool, Olympus
The trident sat poolside, sealed in a sphere of humming gold light, "for the duration of the games." It sparked now and then, like a dog whining at a door.
"It misses me," said Poseidon.
"It's a fork," said Zeus. "Event three."
The Long Paddle was one hundred lengths by kayak, for a statuette labeled Strength and Endurance. Ares had already claimed it.
"Look at those arms. That's me."
"They're all me," said Poseidon. "Read the plaque."
"The plaque says Strength. Have you met me?"
Above them, Hermes took bets in what he called "the betting pool," and Apollo docked Ares two points for aggressive eyebrows.
Before the start, Poseidon crouched beside Old Kleon, the ancient tortoise who'd sat on those tiles since before the pool existed. "You've outlived empires. How?"
The tortoise ate a leaf. Then he watched a sea turtle drift lazily past, all the way to the far wall.
Poseidon filed that away.

"Begin!"
Ares hit the water like it had insulted his mother. Spray flew in sheets. By length five he was a full pool ahead.
Poseidon paddled steadily, almost politely.
But a pool isn't a sea. In the ocean, a wave keeps going. In a pool, it hits the wall and comes back. By length twenty, Ares's furious strokes were all coming back at him, crossing and stacking. The beach ball flew. The rubber duck launched out of the hot tub and landed in Apollo's lap. Apollo gave it a 7.
Poseidon couldn't command a drop. But he'd spent three thousand years watching harbor walls and reefs, and he knew where a returning wave would rise half a breath before it did. He waited that half breath and let the swell carry him.
He wasn't ruling the water. He was listening to it. He found this humbling, and he didn't like it.
When the chop got too rough, he followed the sea turtle, which was swimming the one quiet seam where the waves cancelled out. Poseidon silently thanked a tortoise for answering with a leaf.
At length ninety, Ares was paddling harder than ever, making bigger waves, losing to his own strength. Poseidon passed him at ninety-four without a splash. Ares roared, snapped his paddle in half, and rolled gently and completely upside down.
Poseidon touched the wall at one hundred.

Later, Ares sprawled in the hot tub with the duck on his chest and held out a hand. "You beat me without the sea."
"I beat you with it. It just didn't know it was helping."
The statuette went alone onto the shelf by Poseidon's throne.
"Only one," said Zeus.
"By your ridiculous rules."
At sunset the seal lifted, and the trident leapt joyfully into Poseidon's hand. Every god turned to look at the judge's throne. Poseidon just sipped his orange juice.
A neat little wave rose anyway and drenched Zeus from wreath to sandals.
Everyone stared. Poseidon raised both empty hands.
The sea turtle surfaced, looking extremely pleased with itself.
"I didn't teach him that," said Poseidon. "But I've never been prouder." 🌊🐢🔱

The Deepest Victory 🌊🏆🔱
Poseidon discovered, to his horror, that a pool was nothing like the sea.
The sea had dignity.
The celestial Pool had a rubber duck.
It also had a striped beach ball drifting across lane three, an orange lounge chair beside the starting platform, and an enormous tortoise wandering along the tiles as if Olympus had been built for its personal convenience.
Poseidon stared at it.
“Who approved this arena?”
Zeus looked at his clipboard. “You did.”
“I approved aquatic grandeur.”
“The nymphs interpreted freely.”
By the fourth event, Poseidon was in no mood to discuss interior design. His shelf still stood humiliatingly empty while Apollo had taken Lively Sail, Athena had won Skiing Virtuoso, and Ares had claimed Strength and Endurance after an unfortunate incident involving a starting block.
Only Deep Diver remained that afternoon.
Poseidon wanted it.
Unfortunately, so did Hermes.
The challenge sounded simple. At the deep end, Zeus dropped a small golden ring through a circular opening in the pool floor. Beneath it stretched a narrow submerged shaft lined with marble markers. The competitors would dive, retrieve the ring from the lowest ledge they could reach, and return to the surface.
One breath.
No divine powers.
Hermes grinned. “Try to keep up.”
Poseidon rolled his shoulders. “You are aware that I am Poseidon?”
“Yes. That’s why I said it slowly.”
The whistle blew.
Hermes vanished beneath the water like an arrow.
Poseidon followed—and immediately made every mistake available to a god who had spent several thousand years assuming water should cooperate.
He kicked too hard.
Pulled too hard.
Fought the water at every stroke.
By the third marker, his chest burned.
Hermes was already far below him.
Poseidon surfaced furious.
Zeus made a mark on his clipboard.
“Don’t.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You were writing judgmentally.”
While Hermes rested for the final dive, Poseidon stalked around the pool.
That was when he noticed the tortoise.
It had entered the water.
Poseidon watched it glide beneath the beach ball with one slow sweep of its legs.
No splashing.
No struggle.
Almost no effort at all.
The sea god frowned.
For centuries he had commanded currents, summoned storms and split waves with his trident.
But he had never needed to ask himself what happened when the water was simply allowed to be water.
The tortoise surfaced beside him.
Poseidon crouched.
“You have been holding out on me.”
The tortoise blinked.
“I accept your apology.”
Athena, standing nearby, folded her arms. “Are you taking swimming advice from a tortoise?”
“I prefer to call it tactical observation.”
The final dive began.
Hermes shot downward again.
Poseidon did not.
He slipped into the Pool almost silently, stretched long, and let himself sink before making one clean stroke.
Then another.
No wasted motion.
No fighting.
At the fourth marker, Hermes was still ahead.
At the fifth, the gap narrowed.
At the sixth, Hermes glanced back—and made the mistake of trying to go faster.
His movements became frantic.
Poseidon stayed calm.
Down they went through the blue shaft, sunlight fading above them.
Hermes reached for the golden ring.
His fingertips brushed it.
Then he turned for the surface.
Poseidon descended one stroke farther.
He took the ring.
And only then did he turn.
When Poseidon finally broke the surface, the Pool erupted in cheers.
Hermes appeared a moment later, gulped air, and stared at the ring in Poseidon’s hand.
“You beat me by going slower.”
Poseidon climbed from the water.
“No,” he said, trying very hard not to look toward the tortoise.
“I beat you by arriving with something left.”
Zeus presented him with the Deep Diver statuette—a tiny golden Poseidon bent into a perfect dive.
For once, Poseidon did not complain that the likeness needed broader shoulders.
He carried it to his throne and placed it carefully in the center of the five-place shelf.
“Only one?” Zeus asked.
“But won according to your ridiculous rules.”
The gods applauded. Even Hermes laughed and held out his hand.
Poseidon shook it.
Athena smiled. “Now do you understand that true mastery does not depend on mastery over the elements?”
“Of course,” Poseidon said. “It depends on who exactly is temporarily not wielding this power.”
He glanced at the four empty spaces beside Deep Diver.
“We will continue in a hundred years.”
When the games ended, Zeus restored everyone’s divine powers.
At that exact moment, a small wave rose from the Pool, crossed the tiles, climbed the steps to Zeus’s throne—
—and drenched him from crown to sandals.
Silence.
Poseidon picked up his robe.
“Accident.”
Behind him, the tortoise disappeared beneath the water.
Poseidon gave it the smallest of nods.
A champion knew another champion when he saw one.

🌊🏆 Olympiad: The Pride of Poseidon
📍 Pool, Mount Olympus

🌊⚡🏆 Once every hundred years, the gods of Olympus gathered to settle the question of divine superiority without resorting to thunderbolts, earthquakes, wars, or transforming their rivals into particularly unattractive farm animals. This year's Olympiad had been complicated by Poseidon's insistence that half the events take place in water. After all, he argued, how could the Lord of the Seas be expected to compete fairly in running, archery, or discus throwing when he spent most of his existence underwater? Zeus reluctantly agreed, although he insisted that no divine powers could be used.

https://i.imgur.com/DnBwyYXm.jpeg

Poseidon immediately commissioned five golden statuettes bearing his own magnificent likeness and installed a shelf beside his throne to display them. Unfortunately, the competitions did not proceed according to his expectations. Hermes won the Best Polo Forward award, moving through the water with such astonishing agility that Poseidon accused him of secretly having fins. Apollo claimed Lively Sailing, despite spending more time admiring his reflection in the sail's polished fittings than watching the wind. Athena took Skiing Virtuoso through clever technique and flawless balance, while Ares won Strength and Endurance after a contest that left three competitors exhausted, two boats overturned, and a thoroughly offended Poseidon demanding that the judges investigate the suspicious size of Ares' muscles.

🔱😤🏆 By the final afternoon, Poseidon's magnificent trophy shelf remained embarrassingly empty. Four golden statues of himself now stood in other gods' possession, an indignity he considered practically a declaration of war. He had already accused Hermes of cheating, Apollo of bribing the judges with poetry, Athena of calculating the results before the events began, and Ares of being unnecessarily strong. Zeus had dismissed every complaint, although he did agree to investigate Apollo's poetry on the grounds that it might constitute cruel and unusual punishment. Only one competition remained: Deep Diver, a contest to retrieve a golden pearl from the bottom of the celestial pool, beneath a maze of submerged marble arches. The competitors would be judged on depth, speed, and successful recovery of the pearl, without magical assistance. Poseidon's opponent was none other than Hermes, whose earlier victory had already made him the sea god's least favorite relative. "A messenger boy against the Lord of the Oceans?" Poseidon thundered. Hermes grinned. "At least I know how to deliver something without flooding the entire neighborhood." Zeus raised his hand before Poseidon could demonstrate precisely how much flooding he was capable of.

🏊♂🌊😳 At the starting signal, Hermes dove into the water like an arrow, while Poseidon launched himself with such magnificent enthusiasm that his enormous splash drenched Zeus, Athena, and half the spectators. "That," Zeus announced, wiping his beard, "is not worth additional points." Poseidon barely heard him. He was already plunging downward, confidently commanding the water to part before him.

Nothing happened. He tried again. Still nothing. For the first time in several thousand years, the Lord of the Seas discovered the deeply irritating sensation of water refusing to cooperate. Worse, his beard floated across his face, his ceremonial belt tangled around one ankle, and a particularly inquisitive fish attempted to investigate his nose. Above him, Hermes was already approaching the pearl. Poseidon struggled free of his belt, swallowed an undignified mouthful of water, and surface sputtering. "I demand a restart! The water is defective!" Zeus folded his arms. "The water is perfectly normal." "THAT IS THE PROBLEM!" Poseidon roared.

⚡🐚🏆 Zeus permitted the competition to continue, but warned that another complaint would result in disqualification. Poseidon stared into the depths, his pride wounded more deeply than his lungs. Then something unexpected happened. He stopped thinking like a king and began remembering what he had been long before anyone built him a throne: a creature of the sea who knew its currents, its pressures, its hidden passages, and its silences. He had spent centuries commanding the oceans, but he had also swum through their darkest trenches simply for the pleasure of exploring them. He studied the underwater maze carefully. Hermes was faster, of course, but speed meant little when every arch looked identical. Poseidon noticed tiny streams of bubbles rising from narrow openings between the marble columns. They revealed a shorter route through the maze, one that required patience, careful breathing, and the ability to squeeze through an opening barely wider than his shoulders. He removed his cumbersome robe, tied his beard into a ridiculous knot, and prepared to dive again. "What is that on your face?" Apollo called. "A tactical improvement!" Poseidon snapped. "It looks like a drowned octopus!" Apollo replied.

🌊🥇😄 This time Poseidon entered the water quietly, conserving his breath and allowing his body to glide rather than forcing his way downward. He slipped through the narrow arches, followed the faint current, and descended into the deepest chamber just as Hermes reached the pearl from the opposite direction. Hermes lunged, but his speed carried him past the pedestal, stirring up a cloud of golden sand. Poseidon, moving slowly and deliberately, waited for the sand to settle. He recognized the pearl's position by the faint glimmer beneath the sediment, reached forward, and closed his fingers around it. Then came the hardest part: the ascent. His lungs burned, his muscles ached, and his pride demanded that he emerge triumphantly with the pearl held high. Common sense suggested that surviving would be an excellent preliminary achievement. He kicked steadily upward, passed the final arch, and broke the surface with a tremendous gasp, clutching the golden pearl! The spectators erupted in cheers.

Hermes surfaced moments later, shaking water from his hair. "Well done, Uncle," he admitted, extending his hand. "You actually beat me!" Poseidon accepted the handshake with exaggerated dignity. "Naturally. I merely allowed you a significant head start to make the competition interesting." Zeus rolled his eyes, but awarded him the Deep Diver statuette from the Pride of Poseidon collection, declaring that Poseidon had won through experience, observation, endurance, and genuine skill rather than divine command.

🏆 Conclusion

📸🌊🔱 With a screenshot of the victory safely tucked into his pocket, Poseidon returned to his throne and placed his first honestly earned golden statuette precisely in the center of the shelf. He admired the little golden likeness of himself for so long that Zeus finally cleared his throat. "Just one trophy, brother?" Poseidon smiled. "One earned under your absurd restrictions. Imagine what I could accomplish under sensible rules!" Athena approached, applauding along with the other gods. "Surely you've learned that true greatness comes from skill, not simply commanding the elements?" "Naturally," Poseidon replied. "Although it helps enormously when everyone else is equally inconvenienced." He straightened the statuette, leaving two empty spaces on either side. "Four more in a hundred years," he announced. "And next time, I demand underwater discus throwing!" Zeus declared the Olympiad officially concluded and restored everyone's divine powers. At that precise moment, an enormous wave rose from the celestial pool, swept across the judges' platform, and washed Zeus, throne and all, into the ornamental fountain. A stunned silence followed. Poseidon regarded the dripping King of Olympus with an expression of perfect innocence. "Unfortunate accident," he observed. "These little seas with sides can be terribly unpredictable." Then, carrying his trophy, he marched off to celebrate while the other gods collapsed in laughter—and Zeus began seriously considering whether the next Olympiad should be held in a desert. 🌊🏆😂 https://i.imgur.com/e9C5tEtm.jpeg
