🪄✨ The Staff That Knew the Way
By the time Elara reached the Great Sorcerer’s chambers, nearly every impressive object in the room had disappeared.
The crystal ball was gone.
So were the oldest tarot cards, the silver astrolabe, three spellbooks, a bottle of bottled lightning, and something from the top shelf that had been labeled simply:
DO NOT SHAKE.
Elara stood in the middle of the Fortune-Telling Room and sighed.
“Wonderful.”
The room looked strangely innocent after the raid. Blue flowered sofas curved around a low table. A fire crackled beneath the mantel. Violet smoke curled from an incense burner beside the glowing empty stand where the crystal ball normally rested. Dark wooden shelves climbed the walls, crowded with books, jars, charms and objects whose purposes were probably best left undiscovered.
The other apprentices had rushed upstairs the moment the Great Sorcerer gave his instructions.
Bring me one thing you think I use most often.
They had treated it like a treasure hunt.
Elara hadn't.
She had spent ten years learning magic from the old man, and if there was one thing she knew about him, it was that questions beginning with one small favor were never small.
She walked slowly around the room.
There were clean circles in the dust where valuable objects had been lifted.
There were fingerprints on the books.
Wax beneath the candles.
Nothing useful.
Then she noticed a mark beside the fireplace.
A tiny crescent scratched into the wooden floor.
There was another beside the bookcase.
And another near the window.
Elara crouched.
Not scratches.
Dents.
All the same size.
She followed them across the room.
Fireplace.
Desk.
Bookshelf.
Crystal-ball table.
Window.
Favorite chair.
Back to the fireplace.
A path.
And tucked almost invisibly between the mantel and a bookcase stood the Wizard's Staff.
Elara stared at it.
The dark wooden shaft was slightly twisted, as though it had grown rather than been carved. At its top, a round purple crystal glimmered softly inside its setting.
It wasn't displayed.
It wasn't locked away.
It was simply waiting where the Great Sorcerer's hand expected to find it.
Elara picked it up.
The grip was worn smooth.
One side of the crystal's setting had a faint scorch mark. There was candle wax near the middle, chalk dust farther down and, inexplicably, a thread of blue velvet caught in one of the carvings.
Elara smiled.
“Oh, you poor thing.”

The Great Hall was crowded when she returned.
One apprentice held an enormous grimoire against his chest.
“You consult it every morning,” he explained.
The Great Sorcerer nodded politely.
Another presented his celestial globe.
“You have spent your life studying the heavens.”
Another brought his favorite teapot.
That answer earned considerably more interest.
“My reasoning,” the apprentice said proudly, “is that no one can drink that much herbal infusion accidentally.”
The Great Sorcerer almost laughed.
Then Elara stepped forward with the Wizard's Staff.
A murmur traveled through the hall.
It was certainly magical.
But compared with the treasures already assembled beneath the dais, it seemed almost obvious.
The Great Sorcerer leaned forward.
“Why the staff?”
Elara set its end on the marble floor.
Tok.
“Because you use it when you're doing magic,” she said.
Several apprentices groaned.
The old mage raised one eyebrow.
Elara continued.
“And when you're not.”
The hall quieted.
“You use it to pull books from the top shelf.”
Tok.
“To open the curtains because the cord hangs too high.”
Tok.
“To stir the fireplace when you've misplaced the poker.”
The Great Sorcerer's expression became suspiciously neutral.
“You tap it on the floor when we talk during lectures.”
A few apprentices suddenly became fascinated by their shoes.
“You use the crystal to light the hallway at night. There's chalk on the bottom from the lesson room. Candle wax halfway up from yesterday's séance.”
She turned the staff slightly.
“And this blue thread came from your favorite chair.”
The Great Sorcerer glanced toward his robe.
Elara shook her head.
“Not your robe. Your chair. You use the staff to fish things out from underneath it.”
Someone snorted.
Elara smiled.
“So everyone else looked for the object you use when you're being the Great Sorcerer.”
She held out the staff.
“I looked for what you use when you're simply you.”
For a moment, the enormous hall was silent.
Then the old mage smiled.
Not the grand smile he used at ceremonies.
The smaller one his apprentices knew.
The real one.
He accepted the staff.
“Well,” he said, “that's mildly embarrassing.”
The hall burst into laughter.
He waited until it faded, then lifted the sealed scroll.
“You were asked to find what mattered most not because the answer was hidden.”
His gaze traveled over the apprentices and the magnificent objects piled around them.
“It was difficult because the answer had become ordinary.”
He broke the seal.
“Great magic attracts attention. Wisdom notices what everyone else has stopped seeing.”
The parchment unrolled.
Elara saw the name written there.
Her name.
For once, she had absolutely nothing to say.
The Great Sorcerer grinned.
Then he handed her the Wizard's Staff.
Its purple crystal flared warmly beneath her fingers.
“Take good care of it.”
Elara swallowed.
“I will.”
He leaned closer.
“And if you happen to find my fireplace poker while you're at it…”
Elara laughed.
“Under your chair.”
The new Great Sorcerer's first official act was retrieving it.

The young mage apprentice thought hard about all the objects that his master used. The most important should be the one the great magician used the most, whatever he needed every time he cast a spell.
He went upstairs to the top of the tower and started rummaging through the mage’s multitude of strange objects. There were crystal balls, tarot cards, pointy hats, shinny cloaks, flaming swords, … Finally, he found a staff, a beautiful staff with a glowing huge gemstone at its end. The young student was sure that was the same staff his master took with him everywhere, sometimes just to lean on, sometimes as a symbol of his power and always to conjure his magic. That must be the object he needed!
He carefully lifted the staff, wrapped it with a cloak and made his way downstairs where all the apprentices were gathering, each carrying the magical object they had found. All of them had expectant expressions on their faces, although some looked anxious, some confident and some apprehensive.
The time had come to unveil their findings. They all unwrapped their objects and, to the young student’s dismay, more than half of them had brought staffs, similar to his own. Oh nooo! He should have guessed that it was too obvious. Who had the most unique, but useful item? Who would get the ultimate prize?

Merci 🥰

🔮 TEST OF THE GREAT SORCERER 🔮
💚 PART ONE — DENAE
The Day I Voluntarily Entered a Magical Disaster

I had planned a lovely afternoon.

A little shopping, a cheese board, perhaps a glass of wine, and absolutely no involvement with anything enchanted, cursed, glowing, whispering, or requiring a signed waiver.

Naturally, my younger sister had other ideas.

“Tara, why are we in the Fortune Telling Room?”

“Research.”

“Research for what?”

“I'm investigating the possibility that fortune tellers are actually interdimensional intelligence agents.”

I stared at her.

She adjusted her bejeweled tiara and opened her Handy Dandy Journal.

“It's a working theory.”

“Of course it is.”

I glanced at my watch. Our happy hour reservation was in ninety minutes. Plenty of time, assuming we didn't accidentally discover Atlantis.

Again.

The Fortune Telling Room was unusually quiet. Velvet curtains covered the windows, candles flickered without flames, and the enormous crystal ball in the center of the room was glowing a rather suspicious shade of purple.

Tara noticed immediately.

“Ooooooh!”

“No.”

“I haven't said anything!”

“You made the noise.”

She approached the crystal ball.

I followed, primarily because someone needed to prevent her from licking it to determine whether it was magical.

Then I noticed something odd.

Beside the crystal ball sat a small silver dish containing crumbs, a scorch mark, and what appeared to be a tiny golden scale.

I picked it up.

“Tara, look at this.”

She leaned closer.

“DRAGON SCALE!”

“Or a piece of decorative costume jewelry.”

“DeNae. It's warm.”

Unfortunately, she was right.

Before I could suggest we notify someone sensible, a tiny sneeze erupted from beneath the fortune teller's table.

PFFFT!

A puff of green smoke curled around my ankles.

I lifted the velvet tablecloth.

Two enormous amber eyes stared back at me.

They belonged to a dragon.

A very small dragon.

About the size of an overweight housecat, with emerald scales, ridiculous little wings, and the expression of someone who had recently eaten something expensive.

“Well,” I said, “that explains the fire damage.”

Tara dropped to her knees.

“OH MY GOSH! HE'S ADORABLE!”

The dragon sneezed again, setting fire to the corner of her journal.

I extinguished it with my water bottle.

“Adorable is not the word I would use.”

Around the little creature's neck hung a golden tag.

PROPERTY OF THE GREAT SORCERER
RETURN BEFORE THE TEST BEGINS

Tara gasped.

“The Great Sorcerer! DeNae, do you know what this means?”

“Yes. Someone has lost their pet, and we're going to be late for cheese.”

Suddenly, the dragon scrambled into my handbag.

I felt something tugging at the emergency crackers.

“HEY! Those are for actual emergencies!”

He emerged holding an entire sleeve of crackers, gave me a deeply judgmental look, and promptly swallowed them whole.

Then he burped.

A golden doorway appeared in the wall.

I stared at it.

Tara stared at it.

The dragon wagged his tail.

“Portal!” Tara whispered reverently.

“No.”

“DeNae—”

“Absolutely not.”

From beyond the doorway came a thunderous voice.

“LET THE TEST OF THE GREAT SORCERER BEGIN!”

Then we heard another voice.

“Has anyone seen His Magnificence's dragon?”

A third voice answered.

“Check the kitchens! That dreadful creature ate the royal tapestry yesterday!”

I looked at the dragon.

He looked at me.

Then he reached into my handbag and stole my last packet of cheese crackers.

That settled it.

“Oh, for heaven's sake.”

I grabbed Tara's hand, tucked the dragon under my arm, and marched straight through the portal.

Tara nearly tripped over her own feet.

“DENAE! YOU WENT FIRST!”

“Don't make this a thing.”

“YOU VOLUNTARILY ENTERED A MAGICAL PORTAL!”

“I'm returning a stolen lizard and retrieving my crackers!”

Behind us, the doorway slammed shut.

We stood inside an enormous stone tower filled with floating candles, magnificent tapestries, and dozens of elaborately dressed wizards.

At the far end stood an elderly sorcerer holding a sealed scroll.

He looked directly at us.

Then at the dragon.

Then at my handbag.

A slow smile spread across his face.

“Ah,” he said. “Our final candidates have arrived.”

I blinked.

“Candidates for what?”

He raised his staff.

“Today, one of you shall be chosen as my successor.”

Tara squealed.

I closed my eyes.

Somewhere in the universe, our cheese board was being given to another table.

The sorcerer continued.

“Each candidate must enter my private chambers and bring me the object I use most often. Only one object. Choose wisely.”

Forty-seven wizards immediately rushed toward the staircase.

Tara pulled out her journal.

I adjusted the dragon under my arm.

And then the little beast leaned toward my ear and whispered, in a perfectly understandable voice:

“Whatever you do, don't let them bring him the mirror.”

I froze.

Because just beyond the staircase, I could see forty-seven wizards racing toward an enormous silver mirror.

And inside its reflection stood someone who looked exactly like the Great Sorcerer.

Except he was smiling.

The real sorcerer wasn't.

TO BE CONTINUED… 🔮🐉💚

🔮 TEST OF THE GREAT SORCERER 🔮
👑 PART TWO — TARA
Forty-Seven Wizards, One Dragon, and the Most Important Thing Nobody Noticed

There are moments in life when everything makes perfect sense.

This was not one of them.

My older sister had voluntarily jumped through a magical portal, we were apparently competing to become the next Great Sorcerer, and a tiny dragon had just revealed that he could talk.

Naturally, I was having the BEST AFTERNOON EVER.

“DeNae!” I whispered. “THE DRAGON TALKS!”

“Yes, Tara. I noticed.”

“DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS?”

“That my handbag has become a transportation service for magical livestock?”

“THIS IS HUGE!”

I immediately opened my Handy Dandy Journal.

IMPORTANT DISCOVERIES:

1. Dragons are real.
2. Dragons talk.
3. Dragons steal snacks.
4. DeNae voluntarily entered a portal.
5. Possible evidence that DeNae is developing magical powers.
6. Must investigate whether dragons are related to extraterrestrials.

“Tara,” DeNae said, “focus.”

“Right. Evil mirror. Possible sorcerer impersonation. Got it.”

The dragon climbed onto her shoulder.

“My name is Pip,” he announced. “And that mirror has been lying for three hundred years.”

DeNae sighed.

“Of course it has.”

Pip explained that the Great Sorcerer's enchanted mirror showed people what they desperately wanted to see.

Power.

Fame.

Greatness.

A magnificent future.

And apparently, judging from the apprentices currently gathered around it, themselves wearing exceptionally large hats.

One wizard emerged carrying an enormous golden staff.

“The master uses this to command the elements!”

Another carried a jeweled crown.

“The symbol of his supreme authority!”

A third dragged an ancient spellbook nearly as tall as himself.

“His knowledge comes from this sacred volume!”

One particularly confident wizard arrived carrying a solid-gold throne cushion.

DeNae raised an eyebrow.

“I appreciate the commitment to comfortable seating.”

I was studying the mirror.

There was something wrong with its reflection.

Everyone who stood before it appeared taller, grander, more impressive.

Except Pip.

In the mirror, the little dragon appeared as an enormous, terrifying creature with flames pouring from his mouth.

Yet standing on DeNae's shoulder, he was currently trying to eat a button off her blouse.

Then I noticed something else.

The mirror wasn't reflecting the old sorcerer at all.

It was reflecting an empty chair.

Someone had made the Great Sorcerer invisible to his own enchanted mirror.

I gasped.

“DeNae! I've figured it out!”

“How many theories?”

“Only four!”

“Progress.”

I explained what I'd noticed.

Pip nodded gravely.

“The mirror has been stealing pieces of the master's magic for centuries. Every time someone looks into it hoping to become powerful, it grows stronger.”

“Wonderful,” DeNae muttered. “An evil mirror with self-esteem issues.”

“But why would the sorcerer keep it?” I asked.

Pip lowered his voice.

“Because he is waiting for someone wise enough to recognize what it truly is.”

We looked toward the tower chambers.

Then DeNae did something extraordinary.

She smiled.

Not her usual my sister is exhausting smile.

Her dangerous smile.

The one that usually precedes an idea requiring bail money.

“Tara, I know what we need to bring him.”

I leaned forward.

“A magical crystal?”

“No.”

“An ancient spellbook?”

“No.”

“An alien communication device?”

“Tara.”

“Fine. What?”

She reached into her handbag.

And pulled out a small, rather ordinary-looking object.

I stared.

“DeNae. You're kidding.”

“Not even a little.”

She marched toward the Great Hall.

I followed, absolutely fascinated.

The last apprentice presented his magnificent object to the Great Sorcerer.

The old man thanked him.

Then DeNae stepped forward.

“Your turn,” he said kindly. “What have you brought me?”

My sister placed a simple, well-worn handkerchief on the table.

The entire hall erupted in laughter.

Someone actually snorted.

A wizard wearing seven necklaces announced that we were clearly unqualified.

DeNae folded her arms.

“Are you finished?”

Silence.

She turned toward the old sorcerer.

“Your students have brought objects they believe represent your power. Your staff. Your crown. Your spellbooks.”

She glanced around the hall.

“But we noticed something different.”

I grinned.

Here it comes.

“Your dragon has been missing. Your tower is full of apprentices competing for recognition. And your enchanted mirror is feeding on their ambition.”

The sorcerer leaned forward.

DeNae continued.

“Yet throughout this entire morning, you've listened patiently to every student, even when they've brought you something ridiculous.”

She glanced at the throne cushion.

“Particularly ridiculous.”

A few apprentices coughed.

“And I've noticed that you keep using this handkerchief. You wipe spilled tea, clean your spectacles, and offer it to nervous students who need a moment to collect themselves.”

The Great Sorcerer smiled.

DeNae softened her voice.

“You don't use it to perform great magic. You use it to care for the people around you.”

A hush settled over the hall.

I suddenly understood.

The mirror showed everyone what they wanted to become.

But the handkerchief showed us who the Great Sorcerer already was.

I stepped forward.

“And there's something else.”

I pointed toward the mirror.

“Your test isn't only about finding the object you use most often. It's about noticing what matters when everyone else is distracted by power.”

The surface of the mirror darkened.

A shadowy face appeared.

“FOOLISH GIRL!” it thundered. “DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH MAGIC I POSSESS?”

I considered this.

“Enough to shout at people, apparently. But have you considered therapy?”

DeNae snorted.

The mirror trembled.

Pip spread his tiny wings.

“The spell!” he cried. “The mirror feeds on vanity! It cannot survive being seen for what it really is!”

I understood immediately.

I turned toward the apprentices.

“Everybody! Stop looking at what the mirror promises you! Look at what's actually standing in front of you!”

One by one, the wizards turned away.

The mirror began to crack.

The Great Sorcerer raised his hand, but DeNae stopped him.

“Wait. Let them do it.”

I looked at her in astonishment.

She winked.

My practical older sister had just told the most powerful wizard in the tower to stand down.

I was absolutely writing that down.

The apprentices began helping one another.

Someone caught a falling spellbook.

Another steadied the elderly wizard beside him.

One young apprentice helped a frightened student step away from the mirror.

With every small act of kindness, another crack appeared in the glass.

Then Pip hopped onto the handkerchief.

He inhaled.

He puffed out his chest.

And unleashed the tiniest, most magnificent burst of golden dragon fire I had ever seen.

CRAAAAACK!

The mirror shattered into a thousand shimmering stars.

Instead of falling, the fragments floated upward, becoming tiny lights that filled the Great Hall like a miniature universe.

I gasped.

“DeNae! LOOK!”

“I see them, Tara.”

“THEY LOOK LIKE CONSTELLATIONS!”

“Please don't tell me they're aliens.”

“I'm not ruling it out.”

The Great Sorcerer rose from his chair.

He carefully unrolled the sealed scroll.

“Today,” he announced, “you have all shown me what you value most.”

He looked at the golden staff, the crown, the spellbook, and the extremely unnecessary throne cushion.

“Some sought power. Some sought knowledge. Some sought recognition.”

Then he turned toward DeNae.

“But one of you noticed that the most important magic is often found in the smallest acts.”

He lifted the handkerchief.

“Wisdom is not measured by how much magic one possesses, but by how wisely one uses it.”

He smiled at us both.

“And one of you recognized a danger that had stood unnoticed for centuries, then found a way for everyone to overcome it together.”

I squeezed DeNae's hand.

She squeezed back.

“Now,” the sorcerer said, “it is time to announce my successor.”

He read the name.

PIP THE DRAGON.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Then forty-seven wizards shouted:

“WHAT?!”

Pip sneezed.

A nearby curtain caught fire.

DeNae grabbed her water bottle.

Again.

The Great Sorcerer chuckled.

“Pip has spent years observing every student who enters this tower. He knows who shares, who listens, who helps, and who believes that a large hat makes him important.”

He glanced meaningfully at the wizard wearing seven necklaces.

“Furthermore, Pip has already demonstrated the wisdom to seek help when he could not solve a problem alone.”

Pip looked delighted.

Then he tried to eat the scroll.

The sorcerer sighed.

“His formal education will continue.”

I was thrilled.

“DeNae! WE HELPED A DRAGON BECOME THE GREAT SORCERER!”

“We also missed happy hour.”

Pip fluttered onto my shoulder.

“Perhaps I could offer you a reward?”

My eyes widened.

“A magical crystal?”

“No.”

“A portal key?”

“No.”

“An enchanted spaceship?”

“TARA!” DeNae exclaimed.

Pip looked at my sister.

“What would you like?”

Without hesitation, she replied:

“Cheese. Wine. And a guarantee that we get home before midnight.”

Pip snapped his little claws.

POOF!

A golden doorway opened.

Beyond it stood our favorite restaurant table.

Two glasses of wine.

An enormous cheese board.

And a reservation card bearing our names.

I gasped.

“WE MADE HAPPY HOUR!”

DeNae beamed.

“Now THAT is powerful magic.”

We stepped through the portal.

As it closed behind us, I opened my Handy Dandy Journal and added one final entry.

IMPORTANT DISCOVERY #7:

My older sister is officially more dangerous than I am.

I showed it to her.

She read it.

Smiled sweetly.

Then took a sip of wine.

“Sweetheart, I've been telling you that for years.”

And somewhere far away, in a magnificent tower filled with forty-seven disappointed wizards, a newly appointed dragon sneezed and accidentally turned the throne cushion into a wheel of cheese.

THE END 👑💚🐉🔮✨

Two sisters. One mystery. Endless possibilities. And sometimes, if the magic is particularly cooperative, we actually make it to happy hour.

📜✨ Test of the Great Sorcerer
📍 Fortune Telling Room of the Mysterious House

The Great Hall of the Tower of the Great Sorcerers has been buzzing since sunrise. Today, the old Great Sorcerer, Master Aurelius, would finally announce his successor. The apprentices had spent years mastering spells, studying ancient enchantments, and occasionally setting fire to things that were not supposed to burn. Now, standing in front of them with a sealed scroll, Aurelius declared, "My successor has been chosen!" Then, just as everyone leaned forward, he rolled up the scroll. "But first, one small favor. Go to my chambers and bring me the one thing you believe I use most often. Just one!" The apprentices exchanged bewildered glances. Was this a test? A trick? Had the old man finally misplaced something important? Aurelius simply settled in his chair, poured himself some herbal tea, and smiled. "Off you go. And please don't destroy the furniture."

The first to return was Magnus Thunderstaff, the academy's most spectacular spellcaster, carrying the Great Sorcerer's long wand with its glowing purple sphere. "Obviously!" he announced. "The wand channels your magical power! Without it, you cannot perform your greatest enchantments!" Aurelius nodded politely, then stirred his tea with one finger, causing a tiny thunderstorm inside Magnus's hat. Next came Seraphina Starwhistle, proudly balancing the tall, pointed white Wizard's Hat. "A symbol of wisdom and authority!" she declared. "You wear it whenever you perform important magic!" Unfortunately, she had failed to notice that Aurelius rarely wore it indoors, partly because its wide circular rim kept knocking books off shelves. Balthazar Ironflame arrived dragging the Wizard's Flaming Sword, arguing that a Great Sorcerer must always be prepared for battle. He demonstrated by igniting the blade, promptly setting fire to a tapestry. Aurelius extinguished it with a sigh. "Thank you, Balthazar. That tapestry has survived three wars, two dragon attacks, and my first marriage."

Then came Pip Thistledown, struggling to carry a wriggling miniature red dragon named Cinders. "Your most frequently used possession!" Pip proclaimed triumphantly. "He accompanies you everywhere, helps strengthen your spells, and provides protection!" Cinders, a lovely creature with oversized teeth and very little respect for ceremony, immediately sneezed a shower of sparks in Pip's hair. "Protection from what?" Aurelius inquired mildly. "Certainly not himself." Cinders then attempted to augment Pip's demonstration spell, transforming a nearby silver goblet into a particularly offended-looking turnip. While the other students debated magical power, symbolism, and military preparedness, one student, Elias Wren, had returned to the chambers and was quietly examining the room.

Elias was not the academy's most powerful magician. His fireballs resembled enthusiastic candles, and his attempts at levitation usually succeeded only with objects weighing less than a sandwich. But he possessed something his classmates frequently overlooked: patience. He noticed that the Great Sorcerer's wand rested in a velvet-lined case under a thin layer of dust. The sword hung above the fireplace, polished but clearly rarely removed. The hat occupied a high shelf, its brim slightly bent. Cinder's favorite cushion was covered in claw marks, although the dragon himself seemed to prefer sleeping in the kitchen. Then Elias noticed something hanging beside the bedroom door: a dull-white Wizard's Cloak, ankle-length, loose-fitting, with long, open sleeves and an astonishing number of pockets, both inside and out. Its he was worn, one sleeve had carefully mended, and the fabric around several pockets was shiny from constant use. Elias smiled. Here was something worth investigating.

He examined the cloak more closely. One pocket contained spectacles, another folded handkerchief, another three pieces of peppermint candy. There were chalk sticks, a notebook, a small magnifying glass, a half-eaten biscuit wrapped in paper, and a tiny screwdriver. An inside pocket held a list of appointments, while another contained a spare key to the tower's library. One deep particularly pocket produced a small wooden spoon, two buttons, and a note reading, "Remember where you put the other note." Elias chuckled. But it wasn't the contents alone that convinced him. He remembered seeing Aurelius wearing the cloak at breakfast, during lessons, while examining magical experiments, and even when dozing beside the fireplace. The mage changed hats for ceremonies, chose different wands for different spells, and only drew his sword when necessary. But the cloak? He wore it almost every waking hour. More importantly, it served him constantly, whether he was performing magic or simply living his life.

Elias carefully lifted the cloak from its hook and returned to the Great Hall, where the other apprentices were still defending their choices. When Aurelius asked for his reasoning, Elias answered simply. "Master, you asked what you use most often, not what possesses the greatest magical power. Your wand performs spells, your sword provides protection, your hat represents your position, and Cinders..." He glanced at the dragon, who was trying to swallow the enchanted turnip. "...provides considerable excitement. But your cloak accompanies you throughout the day. Its worn edges show how often you wear it. Its repaired sleeves show how long you've relied on it. And its pockets hold the ordinary tools you need constantly. You may go days without drawing your sword, but I doubt you go an hour without reaching into one of these pockets." Aurelius listened with growing amusement. "Excellent observations, Elias. But tell me, did you find my missing spectacles?" Elias reached into a pocket and produced them. "Along with three other pairs, Master." The old sorcerer beamed. "Wonderful! I've been looking for those since Tuesday!"

🧙✨📜 Conclusion

When the laughter finally subsided, Aurelius rose, unrolled the sealed scroll, and announced, "Elias Wren!" The hall fell silent. "My successor was chosen before today's little exercise"," the Great Sorcerer explained. "But I wanted you all to understand why. You have shown me magnificent spells, impressive arguments, and, in Balthazar's case, a remarkable ability to destroy expensive things. Elias showed me something more valuable. He observed the evidence, questioned appearances, and drew a furnishing conclusion based on facts rather than assumptions. Remember, apprentices, great magic without good judgment is merely a very expensive disaster!"

As the hall erupted in applause, Aurelius slipped into his recovered cloak, reached into an inside pocket, and pulled out the original sealed scroll's missing ribbon. "Ah! There it is!" Then he paused, frowned, and began searching his other pockets.

"Now, has anyone seen my ceremonial wand?"

Elias quietly pointed to the purple-glowing wand still clutched in Magnus's hand.

Aurelius smiled. "You see? I've chosen wisely."

And from under Pip's arm, Cinders gave an enthusiastic little sneeze that turned the ceremonial turnip into a goldfish.

The new Great Sorcerer sighed. His education, apparently, was just beginning. 🧙🐉✨
