👻📖 All for One, and One for the Blanket 📖👻
“How can I help you?”
The ghost didn’t answer right away. He took off his hat, a wide blue thing with a white plume, and turned it slowly in his hands.
“You already have,” he said. “You asked.”
Alexey leaned on the lectern and rolled his sleeves further up. He did that before fixing a leaky faucet or a wobbly chair. Apparently, he also did it before helping a ghost.
“Who were you playing? I know that hat from somewhere.”
The snatchin straightened up and put a green hand to his chest.
“D’Artagnan. Of Gascony.”
His voice grew stronger.
“I’m nineteen years old, with one horse, one letter of recommendation, and far too much pride. I come to Paris dreaming of joining the King’s Musketeers, and I pick a fight with all three of them on my very first day.”
“And you never got to say your lines.”
“Not one.” The ghost lowered his hand. “Do you know what the groaning was? The duel scene. I rehearse it every afternoon. I have to play all three musketeers myself, and Aramis has a very dramatic fall that I can never quite get right.”
Alexey thought about it.
“And the chains?”
“Spurs,” the ghost said, a bit offended. “Poorly translated through the afterlife.”
Alexey looked at the theater book, still open where the ghost had smoothed the page. Then at the clock. Upstairs, his daughter would soon be waking from her nap.
“How long is the play?”
“The whole thing? Three hours.”
“How long is the best part?”
The ghost stopped turning his hat.
“You mean… here?”
“We’ll have to move a few chairs.”

Getting ready took most of the afternoon.
The purple armchair became the royal box. The coffee table had to go against the wall. Alexey moved it twice before the ghost was satisfied.
A broom became Athos’s sword, a wooden ladle became Porthos’s, and the fireplace poker was Aramis’s until Alexey looked at its sharp end.
“No.”
“It has an excellent balance.”
“So does a newspaper.”
The ghost accepted the substitution reluctantly.
From the top of the library ladder, he supervised Alexey’s entrances.
“No, no. Porthos enters from the left. He wants everyone to notice him.”
“I’m all three of them,” Alexey reminded him.
“Then you’ll have to be very quick.”
When Mashenka came downstairs rubbing her eyes, she found her father wearing a bathroom towel over his shoulders. Beside him stood a green, slightly see-through young man in a feathered hat.
She stopped on the bottom step.
“Papa?”
“We’re doing a play.”
The ghost swept off his hat and bowed.
“Mademoiselle. Would you be our audience?”
Mashenka looked at the furniture pushed against the walls, the cushions piled on the floor, and the ladle in her father’s hand.
Then she climbed into the purple armchair and tucked a blanket around her knees.
“Okay. Begin.”

There were difficulties.
Alexey forgot which musketeer he was halfway through the first duel and challenged himself.
“You have insulted me!” he declared.
Then he looked at the ladle in his other hand.
“Oh. That’s also me.”
Mashenka giggled.
Porthos’s sword flew into the bookshelf. Athos sneezed behind a dusty curtain. Aramis announced that he was mortally wounded, checked the position of the cushions, and lowered himself carefully onto them.
The ghost waited.
Alexey lay still.
“Was that it?” the ghost whispered.
“I have to go to work tomorrow.”
Mashenka pulled the blanket over her mouth, but they could still hear her laughing.
Then d’Artagnan stepped forward.
He raised his sword. His feather trembled, and for a moment he glanced at the open book on the lectern.
Alexey gave him a small nod.
The ghost began.
His first words were quiet. The next came clearly. Soon he was striding across the library, challenging enemies, defending his friends, and making promises with his whole heart.
He knew every line.
Alexey scrambled to keep up, switching weapons and voices. When he missed a cue, d’Artagnan turned toward him and held out a hand.
“Will you stand with me?”
Alexey gathered the broom, the ladle, and the newspaper against his chest.
“All three of us.”
Mashenka sat forward. The blanket slipped from her knees.
The ghost laid his hand over Alexey’s, bringing their ridiculous weapons together. Green light spread across their fingers.
“All for one,” he said.
“And one for all,” said Alexey.
“And one for all!” shouted Mashenka.
The ghost turned.
She was standing in the armchair now, one fist raised, ready to join them.
He tried to continue. His mouth opened, but the next line wouldn’t come.
Then he laughed.
He laughed until he had to lean against the lectern. Little green sparkles drifted from his shoulders and settled among the books.
Alexey lowered the weapons.
“Have we reached the end?”
The ghost wiped his eyes.
“Yes,” he managed. “I believe we have.”
Mashenka began to clap.
The ghost stood very straight. He put on his hat, took it off again, and bowed.
She kept clapping.
He bowed a second time.
“Again!” she demanded.
He gave her a third bow, low enough for the white feather to brush the floor.

Afterward, Mashenka went to find a snack.
Alexey retrieved the ladle from the bookshelf. When he turned back, he could see the edge of the lectern through the ghost’s coat.
“She shouted the line,” the ghost said.
“She did.”
“Nobody in the original cast would have dared.”
“She’s five. She hasn’t learned to worry about that yet.”
The ghost smiled and adjusted his feather.
“That’s the thing about d’Artagnan. Everyone remembers the three musketeers. But he’s the fourth. He arrives without an invitation and insists on joining in.”
From the kitchen came Mashenka’s voice.
“Papa! Can the musketeer have a biscuit?”
Alexey looked at the ghost.
“Can you?”
“I should very much like to try.”
Mashenka returned carrying three biscuits and the blanket.
She handed him a biscuit, then held out the blanket. He looked down at it.
“For your shoulders,” she explained. “You’re going all see-through.”
The ghost knelt so she could wrap it around him. Alexey caught one corner before it slipped through and settled it across the ghost’s back.
“There,” Mashenka said.
The ghost held the edges together. For a moment, they stayed,
wrapped in the blanket he had so often tucked around her, the ghost closed his eyes, smiled, and quietly faded into peace.
Later, Alexey checked the photograph he had taken during the duel. Most of it was blurred. His towel cape had slipped over one eye, and the ladle was pointing in the wrong direction.
But d’Artagnan was there, his sword raised and his face bright with joy.
Alexey saved the picture.
His first performance deserved to be remembered.

👻🎭 ONE MORE BOW 🎭👻
Found item: Dart’Agnan
“We’ve heard you haunting us. Tell me what you want.”
The ghost touched the white feather in his hat.
“I was D’Artagnan. My first leading role.” He looked down at the open book. “I never reached the end.”
Alexey considered this.
“Then we’ll need a stage.”
By evening, two curtains hung between the library shelves. Three chairs faced them.
“Only three?” the ghost asked.
“One for me, one for Mashenka, one for her bear.”
“Does the bear enjoy theater?”
“He’s never complained.”
The ghost straightened his blue coat.
Then Mashenka appeared wearing a saucepan.
“I’m a musketeer.”
“You’re supposed to be the queen,” Alexey said.
“I’ve resigned.”
The ghost studied her solemn little face.
“A vacancy in the musketeers. How fortunate.”
He knelt and tied his spare sash around her waist.
Alexey became the cardinal, chiefly because Mashenka said he had the eyebrows for it.
The performance began.
D’Artagnan strode between the curtains. His voice filled the library. He challenged the cardinal, defended his honor, and delivered a magnificent speech interrupted only once.
“Papa, you’re supposed to look frightened.”
“I am frightened. You have the rolling pin.”
The ghost laughed.
He had forgotten he could do that without making someone leave the room.
They fought around the armchair. Alexey surrendered twice, but Mashenka insisted he was still plotting.
Finally, the cardinal collapsed onto the rug.
“France is saved,” he announced. “Papa needs a minute.”
The ghost turned toward his audience.
His last speech. He knew every word.
Behind him, Mashenka climbed onto the footstool to raise her rolling pin in triumph.
Her sash caught beneath her slipper.
The ghost dropped his sword.
He caught her before she reached the floor.
For a moment, he simply held her.
Then he looked toward the curtains.
“My speech.”
Mashenka wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Again tomorrow?”
Light appeared along the ghost’s fingers.
He stared at it.
“Oh,” he whispered.
Alexey stood.
“Is it time?”
“I think so.”
“But you didn’t finish.”
The ghost looked at Mashenka, safe in his arms.
“I think I did.”
He settled her into the armchair and tucked her blanket around her feet.
“Where are you going?” she asked.
“To rest.”
“Will you be scared?”
“A little.”
Mashenka pressed her bear into his hands.
“He’s very good at that.”
The ghost’s mouth trembled.
“Then I shall return him when you’re dreaming.”
Alexey swallowed.
“We’ll manage the blanket. Go on.”
The ghost stepped between the curtains.
Mashenka began to clap.
Alexey joined her.
And at last, with his hat against his heart, the actor took his bow.
The next morning, the bear was back.
A white feather rested beneath his paw.

👑💜 THE ADVENTURES OF TARA & DeNAE 💚👑
👻📖 SORRY TO SCARE YOU 📖👻
PART ONE — THE GHOST WHO COULDN’T TAKE A BOW
📍 Mystery Manor — Library

There are three things you should never do in a haunted mansion.

First, follow mysterious noises.

Second, disturb a ghost.

Third, allow Tara to announce, “I HAVE A BRILLIANT IDEA!”

Unfortunately, DeNae had already experienced all three before lunch.

“TARA! WHY ARE WE IN A HAUNTED LIBRARY?”

“Because, dear sister, someone needs our help!”

“And why are you wearing that ridiculous crown?”

I adjusted my purple, jewel-encrusted tiara.

“It’s my paranormal protection device.”

“That’s aluminum foil underneath those rhinestones.”

“EXACTLY! Ghosts can’t read my thoughts!”

DeNae sighed and opened her handbag.

“Well, if we’re going to die, I’m having a snack first.”

👻 A MOST POLITE HAUNTING

We found Alexey sitting beside a floating book.

“Please don’t be frightened,” he whispered. “Our ghost is actually very considerate.”

A long, mournful howl echoed through the library.

“OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”

Then a tiny voice drifted down the hallway.

“Papa? I’m trying to nap!”

The howling stopped immediately.

“Sorry, Mashenka!” whispered the ghost.

DeNae blinked.

“Well. That’s the first ghost I’ve ever encountered with better manners than my sister.”

I ignored that completely.

“SHOW YOURSELF, SPIRIT! WE COME IN PEACE, LIGHT, AND EXCELLENT ACCESSORIES!”

A little green Snatchin materialized above an armchair.

He wore elaborate theatrical clothing, carried a skull, and looked absolutely miserable.

“I am the Prince of Danmark,” he announced dramatically.

I gasped.

“HAMLET!”

DeNae raised an eyebrow.

“Wonderful. A dead actor playing a man who talks to dead people. That’s not confusing at all.”

💀 TO BE OR NOT TO BE… SLIGHTLY INCONVENIENT

The ghost explained that he had been preparing for the greatest performance of his life.

Hamlet.

The starring role.

His dream since childhood.

But on opening night, just as the curtain rose, tragedy struck.

He collapsed before delivering his famous soliloquy.

“And now,” he whispered, “I am trapped between worlds, condemned to perform my haunting duties without ever finishing my performance.”

I reached for my Handy Dandy Journal.

MISSION: OPERATION HAMLET’S FINAL CURTAIN!

“All right! We need costumes, dramatic lighting, an audience, and possibly a fog machine!”

DeNae stared at me.

“Absolutely no fog machine. Remember the incident with the smoke alarms?”

“That was ONE TIME!”

“Three times. And the fire department knows you by name.”

Alexey explained that he had discovered an old theater program tucked inside the ghost’s favorite book.

It listed the actor’s name and the date of his final performance.

We had our first clue.

But there was a problem.

The ghost couldn’t remember the ending of his own play.

Every time he tried, his memories dissolved into shadows.

“Then we’ll find them!” I announced.

DeNae produced another cookie.

“And how exactly do you propose we investigate a hundred-year-old theatrical disaster?”

Before I could answer, a second tiny figure appeared between the bookshelves.

Green face.

Detective’s cap.

Magnifying glass.

An expression of enormous self-importance.

“ELEMENTARY, MY DEAR LADIES!”

He stepped forward.

“SHERLOCK GNOMES, AT YOUR SERVICE!”

DeNae slowly closed her eyes.

“Oh, good grief. Now the garden decorations are talking.”

The tiny detective lifted his magnifying glass.

“Madam, I am NOT a garden decoration!”

I grinned.

“DeNae, I THINK WE JUST FOUND OUR DETECTIVE!”

And somewhere deep inside the library, a dusty theater curtain began to rise.

All by itself.

To be continued… assuming my sister doesn’t confiscate my tiara before the second act.

👑💚 THE ADVENTURES OF TARA & DeNAE 💜👑
👻📖 SORRY TO SCARE YOU 📖👻
PART TWO — SHERLOCK GNOMES AND THE FINAL CURTAIN
📍 Mystery Manor — Library

I have spent my entire life being exactly one year older and considerably wiser than my sister.

That wisdom has never prevented Tara from dragging me into situations involving ghosts, suspicious noises, or creatures wearing miniature hats.

Today’s catastrophe involved all three.

🔎 THE GAME IS AFOOT!

Sherlock Gnomes marched across the library table, inspecting everything through his magnifying glass.

“A tragic actor! A mysterious death! An unfinished performance! The clues are everywhere!”

Tara practically vibrated with excitement.

“THIS IS AMAZING! A REAL PARANORMAL INVESTIGATION!”

I opened our supply bag.

“Wonderful. I’m making sandwiches.”

Sherlock stopped.

“Madam! We are investigating a supernatural mystery!”

“And detectives need lunch.”

He considered this.

“Do you have cheese?”

“Naturally.”

“Excellent. Proceed.”

Finally, someone in this mansion appreciated my priorities.

Sherlock examined the old theater program while Alexey showed us a faded newspaper clipping.

The article described a terrible accident during the premiere.

A heavy stage chandelier had fallen.

The audience fled in panic.

The young actor playing Hamlet had rushed forward to save another performer.

He succeeded.

But he never survived to take his final bow.

For decades, the ghost had remembered only the unfinished performance, not the life he’d saved.

Tara’s eyes filled with tears.

“Oh, DeNae. He thought he failed, but he was actually a hero.”

Even I had to admit that was heartbreaking.

🎭 THE PERFORMANCE OF A LIFETIME

We decided the only way to help our ghost was to give him the ending he’d been denied.

Alexey transformed the library into a miniature theater.

Sherlock Gnomes appointed himself stage manager.

Tara appointed herself director.

I appointed myself the person in charge of preventing property damage.

An important distinction.

“LIGHTS!” Tara shouted.

I lit two candles.

“CAMERA!”

“This is a PLAY, Tara.”

“WHATEVER! ACTION!”

The ghost stepped into the center of the library, holding his little skull.

For the first time in a century, his voice was steady.

“To be, or not to be…”

The bookshelves shimmered.

The chandelier glowed.

And slowly, ghostly figures appeared in the empty chairs.

An audience.

The very audience from his final night.

Among them stood a young actress.

The woman he had saved.

She smiled.

“You didn’t fail us,” she whispered. “You gave me my life.”

The ghost stood perfectly still.

Then he began to cry.

Tara was openly sobbing.

Sherlock removed his detective cap.

I pretended there was something in my eye.

👻 ONE LAST BOW

With renewed courage, our little prince completed his speech.

When the final words faded, the library erupted in applause.

The ghost bowed.

Once.

Twice.

And then, with a flourish worthy of the greatest stage in the world, he gave the magnificent final bow he’d waited a century to perform.

A golden light surrounded him.

His chains vanished.

His weary expression softened into a peaceful smile.

Alexey stepped forward, holding the small photograph he’d taken to remember his unusual friend.

“So where are you going now?”

“To the realm of eternity,” the ghost answered.

“So you won’t even pop in for a visit?”

The ghost spread his hands apologetically.

Alexey sighed.

“I suppose we’ll have to fix Mashenka’s blanket ourselves.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then the ghost bowed one final time.

And disappeared into the light.

✨ A LITTLE MAGIC LEFT BEHIND

Silence settled over the library.

Beautiful, peaceful silence.

Until Tara sniffled and announced:

“THAT WAS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING I’VE EVER SEEN!”

I handed her a tissue.

Then another.

Then the entire package.

Sherlock Gnomes polished his magnifying glass.

“Case closed! Another spectacular success!”

“Yes,” I replied. “And nobody destroyed the mansion. A personal triumph.”

Just then, Mashenka appeared in the doorway, dragging her blanket.

“Papa? Who tucked me in?”

Alexey smiled gently.

“Perhaps someone wanted to say goodbye.”

We all turned toward the little girl’s blanket.

Neatly folded around her shoulders was a beautiful purple ribbon.

Tara gasped.

“HE LEFT US A SIGN!”

I studied the ribbon.

“Tara.”

“YES?”

“That’s from your tiara.”

She touched her head.

One ribbon was missing.

There was a pause.

Then Tara whispered:

“OH MY GOODNESS. THE GHOST STOLE MY ACCESSORIES!”

I burst out laughing.

“Apparently even the dead have excellent taste.”

We said goodbye to Alexey, gathered our belongings, and headed for the door.

Behind us, the library lights flickered once.

A final theatrical spotlight.

And from somewhere beyond the stars, I could almost hear a whispered:

“Thank you.”

💚 THE END… ALMOST

Outside, Tara opened her Handy Dandy Journal.

“DeNae, I have another brilliant idea!”

I stopped walking.

“No.”

“But what if Sherlock Gnomes has a brother?”

“NO.”

“A detective agency! We could call it THE SISTERS OF SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES!”

I stared at her.

Then reached into my handbag.

“Fine. But our rates are doubling, and I’m charging extra for ghosts.”

Tara grinned.

“Does that include snacks?”

“ESPECIALLY THE SNACKS.”

And somewhere inside Mystery Manor, a tiny detective was already investigating the mysterious disappearance of his cheese sandwich.
