🦇🗝 THE CHAIR THAT HAD THE LAST WORD 🗝🦇
Found item: Armchair of Strigoi — Strigoi’s Castle Collection
Gaspar had stolen jewelry, paintings, and once an entire grandfather clock.
He had never stolen a chair.
But the Strigoi's magnificent red velvet armchair, with its carved mahogany frame and gold trim, looked worth a fortune.
Unfortunately, its owner caught him halfway to the door.
"Restoration," Gaspar announced.
"Excellent!" said the Count. "I've been waiting a hundred years for someone to fix that."
Before Gaspar could object, the vampire settled into the chair.
"Proceed."
Gaspar examined the upholstery. Not a tear. The woodwork was flawless.
"What's wrong with it?"
"It won't let me stand up."
Gaspar stared.
"Have you tried?"
"Repeatedly. My last upholsterer suggested I lose weight. I ate him."
Gaspar knelt beside the chair.
He found a tiny brass keyhole hidden beneath the armrest.
Now we're talking.
His lockpick slipped inside. A familiar click followed.
Beneath the velvet, something began ticking.
The Count's eyebrows rose.
"That's new."
Gaspar removed a small wooden panel, revealing dozens of intricate brass gears. One had slipped from its spindle. He eased it back into place with his pick.
The chair shuddered.
Then it stood up.
Not the Count.
The chair.
Four carved wooden legs stretched like those of a waking spider, lifting the astonished vampire three feet into the air.
"GOOD EVENING, MASTER," announced a voice from beneath the cushion.
The Count went pale, which Gaspar hadn't thought possible.
"Barnaby?"
"YES, MASTER. YOU HAVE BEEN SITTING FOR ONE HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN YEARS, THREE MONTHS, AND SIX DAYS."
Gaspar backed toward the door.
"WHO IS THE GENTLEMAN WITH THE LOCKPICKS?"
"My restorer," the Count replied faintly.
"HE IS STEALING ME."
Gaspar stopped.
The Count slowly turned his head.
"IS THAT NOT CORRECT?" Barnaby asked.
Gaspar considered his options.
"Technically, I was stealing you before I knew you could talk."
"AN IMPORTANT DISTINCTION."
The Count burst out laughing.
Gaspar had never heard a vampire laugh quite so helplessly.
"Barnaby," the Count gasped, "please put me down."
"AFTER YOUR EXERCISE."
The chair marched its owner around the room, counting every step aloud.
At fifty, the Count begged for mercy.
At a hundred, he threatened to have the chair burned.
"YOU SAID THAT IN 1892."
Finally, Barnaby deposited him beside the fireplace.
Gaspar packed his tools, and reached for his cloak.
"Interesting," said the Count, unlocking the door. "I especially liked your method of summoning a master. After all, I never wrote to anyone."
Gaspar froze.
The vampire handed him his cloak.
"Count your tools. I don't want anyone claiming something was stolen from my house."
Behind them, Barnaby cleared his mechanical throat.
"MASTER, YOUR EVENING WALK IS NOT FINISHED."
The Count shut his eyes.
"Gaspar?"
"Yes?"
"Would you consider breaking it again?"

Adventure Quest. Strigoi's Castle -Master of All Lockpicks
https://i.imgur.com/ku2Qahmm.png

🦇🔑 MASTER OF ALL LOCKPICKS 🔑🦇
An Adventure in Strigoi Castle

📍 Strigoi Castle — Where the antiques are priceless, the owner is immortal, and the burglar may become a permanent resident.

🌙🏰 Gaspard had three rules for successful burglary: never steal anything you couldn't carry, never linger to admire your choices, and never get caught. The third was particularly important, although his experience with it was regrettably limited. Young, broad-shouldered, and blessed with more muscle than professional experience, Gaspard considered himself a promising thief. Strigoi Castle, with its reputation for fabulous treasures and an owner who supposedly slept all day, seemed an excellent place to advance his career.

He entered shortly after sunset, reasoning that the Count would surely be enjoying breakfast somewhere else. The grand drawing room was a burglar's paradise. An enormous grandfather clock ticked solemnly beside the fireplace. A beautifully carved chair looked expensive enough to finance his retirement, although getting it through the window might require dismantling the wall. An embroidered armorial pillow lay on a velvet sofa, and an elaborate decorative candle stood in a silver holder. Then he spotted it: an ancient portrait of Dracula, surrounded by a magnificent, heavily carved gilded wooden frame. The painting showed a pale, aristocratic gentleman with piercing eyes, dark hair, and a decidedly unpleasant smile.

"Perfect!" whispered Gaspard. "Small enough to carry, old enough to be valuable, and ugly enough that nobody will miss it."

He lifted the surprisingly heavy portrait from its hook.

"Where are you going? "

Gaspard turned .

Count Strigoi stood in the doorway, elegantly dressed in black, his expression perfectly calm. Two extraordinarily long canine teeth gleamed beneath his upper lip.

"To the workshop," Gaspard replied automatically. "Restoration."

The Count raised an eyebrow.

"Restoration? What's wrong with it?"

Gaspard glanced desperately at the portrait.

"The frame, Your Excellency. Extremely serious. Ancient deterioration. Very dangerous if neglected."

"Indeed? What sort? "

"The sort that becomes obvious upon closer examination."

The Count smiled .

"Splendid! I've been meaning to engage a restoration specialist. You may begin immediately. I shall watch."

With a casual flick of his finger, the front door locked itself.

Gaspard heard the heavy bolt slide into place.

It sounded remarkable like the lid closing on a coffin.

The Count pulled up a chair.

"Well, Master Restorer? Impress me."

Gaspard examined the frame with the concentration of a man attempting to read his own death sentence. Its gilded surface was decorated with intricate leaves, curling vines, and tiny carved faces. Several corners bore faint scratches, and one small ornamental leaf was slightly loose.

Aha !

"Wood fatigue!" he announced triumphantly.

"Wood fatigue? "

"Very common in elderly furniture. After a few centuries, wood becomes exhausted. Especially wood that has spent so much time holding up something unpleasant."

The Count glanced at Dracula.

"An interesting diagnosis."

"Thank you. First, we must examine the structural integrity."

Gaspard tapped the frame.

Knock! Knock !

Something tapped back.

Knock! Knock! Knock !

Gaspard froze .

The Count leaned forward with interest.

"Ah! You've awakened him."

"Awakened by whom? "

"My uncle. "

Gaspard slowly looked at the portrait.

Dracula's painted eyes were now looking directly at him.

"Your... uncle? "

"Great-uncle, technically. He was rather particular about his portrait."

Gaspard swallowed .

"Naturally. Excellent likeness."

The painted Dracula bared his fangs.

"His manners could use some restoration, too," Gaspard muttered.

The Count chuckled .

"Do continue. "

Gaspard desperately searched his pockets. He possessed three lockpicks, a small screwdriver, a polishing cloth, a length of wire, and a pocketknife. Hardly the equipment of a master conservator.

Unless, of course, the master conservator was an exceptionally gifted liar.

"Your Excellency, this is a rare example of what we professionals call sympathetic structural deterioration."

"How fascinating. "

"The portrait and frame have developed a... personal relationship. If the frame is unhappy, the portrait becomes unhappy."

Dracula's painted mouth opened.

"IDIOT! "

Gaspard nearly dropped the entire thing.

The Count laughed .

"Yes, that sounds like Uncle."

"Precisely!" Gaspard exclaimed, recovering. "An extremely advanced case!"

He carefully laid the portrait faceup on a table, wedged the loose wooden ornament back into place with his screwdriver, and polished the gilding with his cloth.

Then something extraordinary happened.

The tiny carved faces along the frame began whispering.

"Too tight! "

"Careful! "

"Watch the corner! "

"He's using a LOCKPICK! "

Gaspard hastily concealed the offending instrument.

"Specialized restoration equipment," he explained.

The Count's smile widened.

"Of course."

Gaspard was beginning to suspect that Count Strigoi was enjoying himself far too much.

Then the portrait snowed.

A cloud of centuries-old dust exploded from behind the frame, covering Gaspard's face and shoulders.

"Bless you!" he gasped automatically.

"THANK YOU," growled Dracula.

The Count looked genuinely astonished.

"Good heavens! Uncle hasn't thanked anyone since 1743!"

Gaspard saw his opportunity.

"Exactly! The restoration is working!"

He polished another corner.

The painted Dracula blinked twice.

Gaspard tightened the loose ornament.

The carved faces stopped complaining.

Finally, he straightened the portrait, stepped back, and declared:

"Your Excellency, the preliminary restoration is complete!"

The Count studied the painting.

"Preliminary? "

"Naturally. The final treatment requires a specialist in... supernatural portrait stabilization."

"And where might I find such a person?"

Gaspard thought quickly .

"Very difficult to locate. Highly secretive profession. But fortunately, I know precisely how to summon one."

"Really? "

"Indeed! One must place the portrait beneath the light of the next full moon, leave it completely undisturbed, and recite the family name three times."

The Count considered this.

"And then? "

"Then, Your Excellency, a master will appear."

"How convenient. "

"Extremely. "

"Have you performed this procedure before?"

"Frequently. "

"Successfully? "

Gaspard hesitated .

"Well... nobody has ever complained afterward."

The Count burst into laughter.

It was a deep, rolling laugh that echoed through the castle, rattled the grandfather clock, and caused the decorative candle to ignite itself.

Gaspard was not certain whether this was encouraging.

Then the Count rose.

"One final question, Master Restorer. Why does a gentleman of your profession carry six lockpicks in his left boot?"

Gaspard's blood turned to ice.

"Six? "

"Yes. I counted them when you climbed through my window."

Gaspard stared at him .

"You... knew? "

"My dear boy, I've owned this castle for four hundred years. Do you imagine I haven't encountered burglars before?"

The Count approached .

Gaspard backed against the table.

"Your Excellency, I can explain—"

"Oh, I'm sure you can. You've been explaining magnificently for the past hour."

The Count's fangs glistened.

"Now, shall we discuss your fee?"

"My... fee? "

"Certainly. You've repaired a loose ornament, removed three centuries of dust, and persuaded my uncle to say thank you. That deserves compensation."

Gaspard blinked .

"What sort of compensation?"

The Count leaned closer .

"Your continued possession of all your blood."

Gaspard considered this offer.

"Very generous, Your Excellency."

"I thought so. "

"May I leave now? "

"In a moment. "

The Count gestured towards the portrait.

"First, a photograph. I insist upon documenting all successful restorations."

He produced an ancient-looking camera, which flashed with an eerie violet light.

A small image appeared in Gaspard's hand: himself standing proudly beside the restored portrait, with Dracula's painted face grinning wickedly over his shoulder.

Across the bottom, in elegant gold lettering, appeared:

MASTER RESTORER GASPARD – FIRST AND POSSIBLY LAST COMMISSION.

Gaspard tucked the picture into his pocket.

He decided not to ask how the camera had managed to print the words.

🦇🔑 Conclusion — The Master's Final Examination

With his photographic souvenir safely tucked away, Gaspard stepped back from his handiwork. Count Strigoi inspected the antique frame, studied the newly polished gilding, and then turned toward the young burglar. His silence lasted just long enough for Gaspard to reconsider every career decision he had ever made.

"Remarkable," the Count said at last, unlocking the great front door. "But I particularly admired your ingenious method of arranging for a master craftsman to appear. Especially considering that I never sent for one."

Gaspard's mouth fell open.

At the threshold, the Count handed him his cloak, brushed a little dust from his shoulder, and added pleasantly:

"Oh, and do count your tools before leaving. I should hate for anyone to accuse a guest of stealing something from my castle."

Gaspard counted his lockpicks.

There were seven .

He had entered with six .

Attached to the seventh was a tiny silver tag:

FOR YOUR NEXT VISIT. PLEASE USE THE FRONT DOOR.

From deep somewhere inside the castle, Dracula's portrait began laughing.

Gaspard ran.

And for the first time in his short criminal career, he left a castle with something considerably more valuable than stolen treasure.

A professional recommendation from a vampire... and an overwhelming desire to find honest employment. 🦇🤣

🦇🔑 THE SISTERS OF SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES 🔑🦇

PART ONE — THE COUNT, THE CLOCK, AND THE COMPLETELY UNINVITED DATE

📍 Strigoi Castle — Somewhere in the Mystery Manor Garden

👑 TARA’S STORY

There are three things a woman should never do on Halloween.

One: Follow mysterious music through a dark garden.

Two: Enter a castle without checking the invitation.

Three: Tell her older sister, “Oh, come on, DeNae! What’s the worst that could happen?”

Naturally, I’d accomplished all three before happy hour. 🍷🤣

We were headed to the Manor’s SPECIAL HALLOWEEN HAPPY HOUR, where the cocktails were supposedly bottomless, the appetizers complimentary, and costumes optional.

I’d dressed as a glamorous witch.

DeNae had dressed as a woman who wanted her cocktail delivered on time.

Both were excellent costumes.

When we spotted a magnificent castle glowing beneath the Halloween moon, complete with flickering candles and dramatic red velvet curtains, I squealed.

“WE FOUND IT!”

DeNae consulted her Handy Dandy Journal.

“Tara, the invitation says Garden Pavilion.”

“Well, THIS is a pavilion with ambition!”

Before she could object, I pushed open the enormous doors.

CREAAAAAAAAK!

Inside stood an extraordinarily handsome gentleman in a black velvet coat, with silver-streaked dark hair, piercing eyes, and a smile that could make a woman forget her own ZIP code.

Unfortunately, that smile also revealed two very impressive fangs.

“Welcome,” he purred. “I am Count Strigoi.”

I elbowed DeNae.

“Well, HELLO, Halloween entertainment!”

The Count barely glanced at me.

His eyes had locked onto my sister.

“My heavens,” he whispered. “After four centuries… at last.”

DeNae looked behind her.

“Are you talking to ME?”

“My beautiful moonlit destiny.”

“Absolutely not,” she replied. “We’re looking for happy hour.”

“Then perhaps,” he said, bowing deeply, “you will allow me to accompany you.”

I immediately approved.

DeNae immediately did not.

“Does he eat garlic bread?” she whispered.

“Ask him!”

“Does he eat PEOPLE?”

“DE NAE! Don’t be rude!”

The Count laughed.

“Allow me to entertain you with a tale from long, long ago.”

And so, instead of enjoying two-for-one cocktails, we found ourselves beside an enormous ANTIQUE GRANDFATHER CLOCK listening to the Count describe an extraordinary incident from centuries past.

“One moonless evening,” he began, “a thief named Gaspard entered my castle, determined to steal the most valuable object he could carry.”

Gaspard, apparently, was a master of lockpicks.

Unfortunately, he was not a master of good decisions.

He had selected my magnificent grandfather clock.

I stared at the enormous wooden clock.

“How exactly was he planning to carry THAT?”

The Count smiled.

“An excellent question. He had brought a furniture dolly.”

“PREPARED criminal!” I announced.

DeNae sighed. “Please continue.”

The Count explained that he’d caught Gaspard attempting to wheel the clock toward the door.

“WHERE ARE YOU GOING?” he’d demanded.

“To the workshop,” Gaspard answered.

“What for?”

“Restoration.”

The Count had examined the clock.

“What requires restoring?”

And Gaspard, realizing he was approximately three seconds from becoming a midnight snack, replied:

“The… tick.”

I blinked.

“The TICK?”

“Indeed,” said the Count. “He insisted my clock possessed an improperly calibrated tick.”

DeNae snorted.

“That’s the stupidest excuse I’ve ever heard.”

“Precisely!” the Count exclaimed. “Naturally, I insisted he repair it immediately. Under my supervision.”

He locked the castle doors.

Gaspard opened his toolbox.

And for the next hour, the supposed master restorer stared helplessly at the clock’s ancient mechanical workings.

Until inspiration struck.

“MY LORD!” Gaspard cried. “I HAVE DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM!”

“What problem?” asked the Count.

“Your clock is suffering from a severe case of… temporal melancholy!”

I gasped.

DeNae looked at me.

“Do NOT encourage this.”

But I couldn’t help myself.

“A SAD CLOCK?!”

The Count nodded solemnly.

“Apparently, yes.”

According to Gaspard, the clock had become depressed from spending centuries in the presence of the undead.

It needed encouragement.

Music.

Fresh air.

And, most importantly…

A PROFESSIONAL CLOCK SPECIALIST.

“Which is what I thought YOU were,” the Count had replied.

“Oh, no, Your Lordship. I’m merely the preliminary consultant!”

With tremendous theatrical confidence, Gaspard produced a scrap of parchment, wrote an urgent message, and announced that he’d summoned the finest clockmaker in the kingdom.

“Wonderful,” said the Count. “We shall wait.”

Then he sat directly in front of the door.

For THREE HOURS.

I was laughing so hard I nearly fell off the velvet sofa.

“PLEASE tell me the clockmaker showed up!”

The Count’s handsome face spread into a wicked smile.

“Oh, my dear Tara… someone most certainly did.”

At that exact moment, our own grandfather clock struck six.

DONG! DONG! DONG!

DeNae sprang to her feet.

“SIX O’CLOCK?! TARA! WE ARE MISSING HAPPY HOUR!”

The Count reached for her hand.

“Fear not, my radiant beauty. I have waited four hundred years. Surely I can wait another evening.”

DeNae snatched her hand away.

“Well, I can’t. The appetizer buffet closes at seven.”

I grabbed my purse.

“COME ON, COUNT! YOU’RE COMING WITH US!”

DeNae stopped dead.

“TARA!”

“What? He’s handsome, he’s rich, and he probably knows where the good wine is buried!”

The Count smiled, displaying his magnificent fangs.

“And perhaps, sweet DeNae, before the evening ends, I shall convince you of the beauty of eternal companionship.”

DeNae stared at him.

“Listen, Dracula Junior. I don’t care how handsome you are. I’m not getting fangs.”

I took her arm.

“Don’t be ridiculous, sister.”

Then I leaned closer and whispered…

“Although… they’d look FABULOUS on you.”

🦇🍷 THE SISTERS OF SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES 🍷🦇

PART TWO — THE THIEF KEPT HIS NECK. I KEPT MY STANDARDS.

📍 Strigoi Castle → The Mystery Manor Halloween Happy Hour

💚 DENAE’S STORY

Let me explain something.

I was promised cocktails.

I was promised appetizers.

I was promised an enjoyable Halloween evening with my younger sister.

I was NOT promised a centuries-old vampire who kept referring to me as his “eternal moonflower.”

And yet, there we were.

Still inside Strigoi Castle.

Still listening to a story about a thief.

Still nowhere near a cocktail.

And my sister Tara was apparently trying to arrange my marriage to a dead man.

A HANDSOME dead man, admittedly.

But STILL.

“Count,” I said firmly, “finish the story. We have reservations.”

The Count smiled.

“Anything for you, my exquisite midnight rose.”

Tara giggled.

“OH, I LIKE THAT ONE!”

“Nobody asked you.”

The Count continued his tale.

Centuries ago, Gaspard the thief had convinced the Count that his antique grandfather clock was suffering from temporal melancholy.

He’d supposedly summoned a master clockmaker.

But there was one tiny problem.

HE HADN’T ACTUALLY SUMMONED ANYONE.

For three miserable hours, Gaspard had polished the clock, adjusted its hands, inspected the pendulum, and periodically declared:

“Hmmm. Very concerning.”

Finally, at precisely midnight, someone knocked at the castle door.

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

Gaspard nearly swallowed his own tongue.

Standing outside was an elderly clockmaker named Master Petru, who had been summoned earlier that evening to repair the bell mechanism of the village chapel.

He’d simply taken the wrong road.

And knocked at the wrong castle.

THE WRONG CASTLE!

Tara nearly exploded.

“THAT’S NOT LUCK! THAT’S DIVINE INTERVENTION!”

The Count chuckled.

“Indeed. Gaspard immediately declared that his distinguished colleague had arrived.”

Master Petru was understandably confused.

But Gaspard whispered three magical words.

“DOUBLE YOUR FEE.”

Suddenly, the old clockmaker understood everything.

He examined the antique grandfather clock, opened its mechanism, adjusted a loose escapement component, and carefully reset the pendulum.

TICK… TOCK… TICK… TOCK…

The clock began keeping perfect time.

The Count inspected it thoughtfully.

“Remarkable,” he said. “Especially your method of summoning a master. I never wrote to anyone.”

Gaspard froze.

The Count smiled.

Then he unlocked the door.

“Your cloak, Mr. Gaspard.”

The thief hurried toward freedom.

“One final thing,” the Count added.

Gaspard turned, his face pale as moonlight.

“Count your tools. I wouldn’t want anyone claiming something had been stolen from my castle.”

Gaspard emptied his toolbox.

Every screwdriver.

Every wrench.

Every lockpick.

All accounted for.

The Count leaned closer, revealing his fangs.

“And next time, my dear fellow… simply ask for employment.”

GASPARD RAN SO FAST HE LEFT BOTH SHOES ON THE FRONT STEPS.

Tara howled with laughter.

“WAIT! YOU LET HIM GO WITHOUT BITING HIM?!”

“Of course,” the Count replied. “I have standards.”

I folded my arms.

“Well, that’s refreshing.”

The Count gazed lovingly at me.

“Although I must confess, my beautiful DeNae, I have occasionally reconsidered the merits of sharing eternity with another.”

Oh, here we go.

Tara fluttered her eyelashes.

“OH, COUNT! You romantic old bloodsucker!”

“Do not encourage him,” I warned.

The Count stepped closer.

“DeNae, imagine it. Centuries together. Moonlit gardens. Candlelit dinners. Endless dancing beneath the stars.”

I considered this.

“Would there be unlimited cocktails?”

“Naturally.”

“Would I have to sleep in a coffin?”

“Not necessarily.”

“Would I have to give up garlic bread?”

He hesitated.

HE HESITATED.

“DEAL BREAKER!” I announced.

Tara almost fell over laughing.

But the Count wasn’t finished.

“Perhaps,” he murmured, “you would reconsider if you embraced the gift of immortality.”

His fangs glimmered.

“You would be magnificent with fangs, my darling.”

Tara clapped her hands.

“ACTUALLY, SHE WOULD! Imagine the Halloween selfies!”

I turned toward my sister.

“Tara, you are ONE COMMENT away from being disinherited from my emergency snack supply.”

That shut her up.

For approximately four seconds.

Then she whispered, “But the cheekbones, DeNae…”

“NO FANGS!”

The Count placed a hand over his heart.

“Your wishes shall always be respected, my love.”

“Wonderful. Then let’s start with calling me DeNae.”

He bowed.

“As you wish, my eternal—”

“DENAE.”

“Of course.”

At last, we made our escape from Strigoi Castle.

Except the Count INSISTED on accompanying us.

So down the moonlit garden path we went.

Tara skipping ahead.

Me clutching my Handy Dandy Journal.

And Count Strigoi walking beside me, describing the magnificent wedding he apparently envisioned.

“I have a chapel,” he offered.

“No.”

“A ballroom.”

“No.”

“A private wine cellar.”

I paused.

“How private?”

Tara shouted from ahead.

“SHE’S NEGOTIATING!”

“I AM NOT!”

We finally reached the Halloween Happy Hour.

Music filled the garden.

Pumpkins glowed.

Costumed guests danced beneath the stars.

And the bartender took one look at our handsome, fanged companion.

“Fantastic costume, mate!”

The Count looked deeply offended.

Tara ordered three cocktails before he could challenge the bartender to a duel.

I ordered the appetizer platter.

PRIORITIES.

For the next hour, the Count behaved like a perfect gentleman.

He complimented my dress.

He offered to dance.

He even refrained from commenting when I ordered garlic bread.

Although he did move his chair back six inches.

Eventually, the party began winding down.

The Count took my hand and kissed it gently.

“Until we meet again, beautiful DeNae.”

I smiled politely.

“Good night, Count.”

“My heart has belonged to darkness for centuries. Tonight, it belongs to you.”

I will admit…

That was rather sweet.

Creepy.

But sweet.

Tara was behind him silently mouthing:

“KISS HIM! KISS HIM!”

I silently mouthed something back.

It was NOT “I love you.”

As we gathered our things, the Count discreetly slipped something into my open handbag while I was distracted by the dessert table.

Then he vanished into the moonlight.

Naturally.

Very dramatic.

Very vampire.

Very much something Tara would do if she could turn into a bat.

We were halfway back to the Manor when I opened my purse.

And SCREAMED.

“TARAAAAA!”

“What?! Is there a bat?!”

“WORSE!”

Inside my handbag was an exquisite, centuries-old PORTRAIT OF DRACULA, framed in glittering gold.

The same portrait we’d admired inside Strigoi Castle.

Attached was a small handwritten note.

“My dearest DeNae,

Once, this portrait reminded me of the lonely centuries I endured.

Now it shall remind you of the evening I discovered the most beautiful woman in all my immortal existence.

Keep it close, and think of me when the moon is full.

Should you ever desire eternal romance, my castle doors shall remain open.

And should you ever change your mind about the fangs…

I assure you, my darling, they would look extraordinarily beautiful upon you.

Forever yours,
Count Strigoi 🦇”

I stared at the portrait.

Tara stared at the portrait.

Then my sister collapsed onto a garden bench, laughing hysterically.

“HE GAVE YOU HIS OWN PICTURE! DENAE! YOU HAVE A VAMPIRE BOYFRIEND!”

“I DO NOT HAVE A VAMPIRE BOYFRIEND!”

“An IMMORTAL vampire boyfriend!”

“TARA!”

“With a castle!”

“TARA!”

“And a wine cellar!”

I paused.

“…You really need to stop mentioning the wine cellar.”

She grinned.

“See? HE’S GROWING ON YOU!”

I stuffed the portrait back into my purse.

“Well, at least he’s not trying to steal my grandfather clock.”

“No,” Tara replied cheerfully. “He just wants to steal your HEART!”

We continued through the garden.

Then, from somewhere beyond the trees, we heard a distant, romantic voice.

“GOOD NIGHT, MY ETERNAL MOONFLOWER!”

I didn’t even turn around.

“STILL NOT GETTING FANGS!”

Tara laughed so hard she tripped over a pumpkin.

And somewhere in the darkness, a lovesick vampire sighed.

As for Gaspard?

He’d escaped Strigoi Castle centuries earlier with his neck intact, his lockpicks accounted for, and his criminal career considerably less appealing.

Apparently, the Count had never managed to convince him to return.

But me?

He was already planning a second date.

WITHOUT MY PERMISSION.

And that, dear friends, is why my Handy Dandy Journal now has an entirely new section:

📝 HALLOWEEN SURVIVAL RULES

Rule #1: Never mistake a vampire castle for happy hour.

Rule #2: Never let Tara select your dates.

Rule #3: Never accept mysterious gifts from men who have been single for four hundred years.

Rule #4: ALWAYS inspect your handbag before leaving a castle.

Rule #5: NO. FANGS. EVER.

Unless…

No.

ABSOLUTELY NOT.

🦇🍷👑💚🤣

THE END

P.S. Tara has already suggested we host next year’s Halloween Happy Hour at Strigoi Castle.

I have hidden the invitations.

Gaspar had been caught red-handed by Count Strigoi himself. He thought quickly about how to explain the fact that he was holding a very expensive looking armorial pillow.
He spluttered: “I had been told there were items in this castle that needed repair, so I came to look and found this pillow.”
”So what can possibly be wrong with that pillow?, Strigoi demanded to know.
“Well, do you see the little hole in the middle of the bat figure? It is suppose to produce a little squirt of blood when you press it. Basically, if you feel like a snack, but not hungry enough to go out … eh … hunting, then this little pillow can provide it for you. But it is obviously malfunctioning.”
Strigoi thought for a minute and then said, “Fine, fix it. I will watch how you work. In the meantime I will share some of my life stories with you.”
So Gasper started by removing the bat figure, added a little compartment underneath, cut his finger to place a bit of blood in the compartment and replaced the bat on the pillow. All this time Strigoi was chatting away telling stories that Gasper preferred not to listen to.
Once, he finished, Gasper handed the pillow to the Count and asked him to test the device. Strigoi did so and was delighted as a little spurt of blood went into his mouth. He immediately offered Gasper a job. “I would like you to start fixing more things around the castle and update everything. I want to modernise and live a more efficiently. I also enjoy talking about my life and you are a good listener”,  he said.
Gasper then offered to come to the castle every Thursday and work for a few hours.
Strigoi looked at him and exclaimed, “That was not what I had in mind. I am rather thinking of a more permanent position, maybe even ….. forever”.
“What do you mean ‘forever’?”. Gasper watched Count Strigoi come closer and closer. Then, he felt the sharp fangs on his neck and finally understood what a vampire means by ‘forever’.
