🌊🪐 AMPHITRITE

The Vacation Elon Promised Would Be Relaxing

✨ PROLOGUE — ELON HAS BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS FOREVER

Elon had been trying to take us to Neptune for months.

Possibly years.

Time becomes difficult to measure when someone begins every third conversation with:

“You know where we should go?”

Eventually John stopped looking up.

“Neptune.”

“Yes.”

“We know.”

“But have I explained—”

“Yes.”

“The floating—”

“Yes.”

“The ocean cities—”

“Yes.”

“The bioluminescent—”

“Yes.”

Elon frowned.

“You people take all the fun out of a presentation.”

I nearly fell off my chair.

This from the man who had once shown us seventeen slides explaining why the transportation vehicle for one of our expeditions needed four cup holders per person.

I personally thought he had made an excellent case.

DeNae did not.

“Nobody needs four beverages at once.”

I slowly moved my coffee, water, iced tea, and mysterious purple Pleiadian fruit drink closer together.

DeNae looked at me.

I looked at her.

Neither of us said anything.

Some battles are already lost.

The official destination paperwork called the planet AMPHITITRA.

I studied the document.

Then studied Elon.

“Absolutely not.”

“What?”

“We’re going to Neptune.”

“Yes.”

“The locals call it Amphitrite.”

“Yes.”

“So why does this say Amphititra?”

Elon shrugged.

“Translation.”

I wrote in my handy-dandy journal:

IMPORTANT SPACE TRAVEL RULE #47:
Never allow interplanetary tourism documents to be translated by someone who has not had coffee.

The locals called their world Amphitrite.

Beautiful.

Mythological.

Perfectly appropriate for a blue water world orbiting far beyond Earth.

Therefore, Amphitrite it was.

I crossed out AMPHITITRA on every copy of the itinerary and wrote AMPHITRITE — ALSO KNOWN AS NEPTUNE, OBVIOUSLY across the top.

Julie watched me.

“You realize official documents generally prefer not to be altered with purple glitter pen.”

“They’ll appreciate the clarification.”

John leaned toward her.

“They will not.”

Our traveling party consisted of the usual suspects.

DeNae, my older sister by one whole year, who had already packed snacks, emergency snacks, backup emergency snacks, electrolyte packets, pain relievers, wet wipes, tissues, spare socks, and something labeled TARA — DO NOT EAT UNLESS ACTUALLY NECESSARY.

I ate one before takeoff.

Julie had organized our documents into color-coded folders.

John had inspected the ship himself because apparently trusting Elon with interplanetary transportation required “reasonable verification.”

Lala had packed twelve outfits for five days.

Laura had packed six.

Oksana had packed one small bag containing, as far as I could tell, every object any human being could possibly need.

Nobody understood how.

Oksana understands dimensional storage.

I am convinced of this.

Our official guild mascot, Rowan the Sparkle Goblin, had packed a satchel of old-world charms, three books no one could read, and enough glitter to contaminate an entire planetary ecosystem.

Our fairies were thrilled.

The Pleiadian Princesses were even more thrilled because apparently Amphitrite was a favorite vacation destination among extraterrestrial royalty.

This information bothered John.

“You’ve been there?”

One princess smiled.

“Many times.”

John stared at Elon.

Elon suddenly became extremely interested in checking a navigation panel.

Then there was Ziv.

Her legal name, according to the passenger manifest, was Zhenya.

Nobody called her Zhenya.

We called her Ziv.

Apparently some bureaucratic system somewhere in the galaxy cared deeply about the distinction.

We did not.

Ziv had one goal.

Vacation.

Actual vacation.

She had announced it three times.

“I am not solving mysteries.”

Fine.

“I am not rescuing anyone.”

Reasonable.

“I am not investigating ancient technology.”

Understandable.

“I am not following strange lights, opening mysterious doors, touching glowing objects, listening to prophecies, entering ruins, deciphering symbols, or chasing anything.”

At that point the entire guild became quiet.

Ziv narrowed her eyes.

“What?”

I looked at DeNae.

DeNae looked at Julie.

Julie looked at John.

John stared straight ahead.

Lala finally said:

“You probably shouldn’t have said all of those things out loud.”

Exactly.

Never challenge the universe.

Especially before leaving Earth.

Elon’s ship reached Neptune after what he repeatedly described as a “very efficient transit.”

John repeatedly described it as “physics I intend to review later.”

Then Amphitrite appeared beneath us.

And everyone stopped talking.

The deep sapphire planet glowed.

Entire cities floated upon the water like jeweled necklaces.

Circular platforms stretched across enormous calm seas.

Transparent towers shimmered beneath the surface.

Bridges unfolded between buildings as small transport vessels sailed through canals filled with blue-green light.

Schools of enormous silver creatures moved through the water.

Tiny flying jellyfish drifted through the sky.

Far below, a restaurant floated beneath a dome shaped like a seashell.

I pressed both hands against the window.

“Ohhhhh.”

DeNae appeared beside me.

“Pretty.”

“ALIEN WATER PLANET.”

“Yes.”

“REAL ALIENS.”

“Yes.”

“FLOATING RESTAURANTS.”

That got her.

DeNae leaned closer.

“Where?”

I knew my sister.

Our hotel stood on a floating platform called the Pearl Meridian.

The staff greeted our fairies without blinking.

The Pleiadian Princesses received hugs.

Rowan was immediately offered a tiny goblin-sized welcome drink garnished with a silver berry.

Rowan looked at me.

“I like it here.”

So did I.

The locals were elegant aquatic humanoids called Nerathi.

Most had luminous markings along their faces and arms, soft blue, silver, violet, or turquoise skin tones, and enormous expressive eyes.

Some had webbed hands.

Some had flowing fin-like crests.

One had four arms and carried six plates of hors d’oeuvres.

DeNae noticed that one immediately.

“Friend.”

Our first meal included pearl-shaped dumplings, cloudbread, sea-flower salad, roasted moonroot, glowing fruit, crystal pastries, and something that looked terrifying but tasted exactly like garlic butter.

I had three.

John questioned the chemistry.

Julie told him to stop ruining dinner.

Elon lifted his glass.

“To five peaceful days.”

I should have stopped him.

Ziv lifted hers.

“To doing absolutely nothing important.”

I definitely should have stopped her.

Because after dinner, Ziv wandered through the floating market.

And bought a doll.

Just a little tourist souvenir.

Nothing threatening.

Nothing magical-looking.

Nothing glowing.

Nothing whispering.

It was a tiny blue traveler wearing a silver cloak and carrying a miniature shell-shaped pack.

Ziv placed it beside the window in her hotel room.

“Look,” she said.

“A colleague.”

Cute.

Harmless.

Completely innocent.

I wrote in my journal:

DAY ZERO:
Vacation successful.
No mysteries.
No ancient technology.
Nobody lost.
Nobody cursed.
Nobody accidentally married to alien royalty.
Excellent progress.

The Tourist Doll sat quietly beside the window.

At least…

it did when we went to bed.

🐚 DAY ONE — THE MORNING BEGAN WITHOUT HER

At 7:04 the next morning, someone pounded on my door.

I opened it wearing one slipper, my robe, my tiara, and absolutely no willingness to deal with emergencies before coffee.

Ziv stood there.

“My doll is gone.”

I blinked.

“What doll?”

“The souvenir.”

“Oh.”

I started closing the door.

“It’s swimming away.”

The door stopped.

I reopened it.

“Your doll is what?”

Five minutes later the entire guild was pressed against the transparent wall of Ziv’s room.

Far below us, in the canal, the Tourist Doll floated past.

Upright.

Not bobbing.

Not drifting.

Traveling.

There is a difference.

Ziv opened the balcony panel.

“HEY!”

The Tourist Doll continued.

On the next balcony, a Nerathi gentleman calmly sipped something steaming from a glass cup.

He watched the doll.

Then watched us.

Then watched Ziv.

Ziv clearly wanted to ask him something.

She did not.

Instead she smiled pleasantly.

“Good morning.”

“Bright tides,” he replied.

Ziv closed the panel.

I stared at her.

“You didn’t ask him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because maybe souvenirs swim here.”

DeNae crossed her arms.

“Do your refrigerator magnets wander through Virginia?”

“That’s different.”

“It really isn’t.”

From below, the Tourist Doll reached an intersection.

Then turned left.

Against the current.

Everyone became quiet.

John leaned closer to the glass.

“That is not passive movement.”

I pointed at him.

“THANK YOU.”

He sighed.

“Do not enjoy this.”

Too late.

I already had my journal out.

We ran downstairs.

Elon met us in the lobby holding coffee.

“What happened?”

I passed him.

“Ziv’s souvenir escaped.”

He stared after us.

“What?”

“Keep up!”

Our first transportation lesson on Amphitrite involved sea-skimmers.

Imagine a gondola.

Now remove everything reasonable.

Add a transparent bottom.

Give it magnetic levitation fins.

Then allow an enthusiastic six-eyed alien named Piko to drive it at approximately nine hundred miles per hour.

Piko loved tourists.

Piko loved speed.

Piko especially loved Lala screaming.

“AGAIN?”

“NO!”

Piko accelerated.

Lala screamed louder.

Piko interpreted this as enthusiasm.

The Tourist Doll stayed ahead of us.

Every time we nearly reached it, the tiny thing changed direction.

Not randomly.

Deliberately.

It waited at crossings.

Moved when we approached.

Stopped once beside a bakery.

I noticed this.

Everyone else kept tracking the doll.

I tracked the pastries.

“Guys.”

No response.

“Guys.”

DeNae turned.

“What?”

“Alien bakery.”

“Tara.”

“It could be important.”

“It is not.”

Five minutes later we were all eating warm spiral pastries filled with luminous berry cream.

Even John.

I wrote:

INVESTIGATION RULE:
Never pursue sentient souvenirs on an empty stomach.

The Tourist Doll waited patiently on a railing during breakfast.

Then moved again.

Julie pointed.

“It waited for us.”

Ziv lowered her pastry.

“That’s creepy.”

Rowan shook glitter from his sleeves.

“Not creepy.”

Everyone looked at him.

Rowan studied the doll.

“Old.”

Oksana tilted her head.

Of course Oksana already knew something.

I knew that expression.

“Oksana.”

She smiled.

“What?”

“You know.”

“I often know.”

“Tell us.”

“No.”

Lala gasped.

“That is mentor abuse.”

Laura laughed.

The Tourist Doll continued toward the outer districts.

By afternoon, we had traveled through floating neighborhoods filled with water gardens, underwater bookstores, shell markets, music bridges, and one café operated entirely by telepathic octopus-like beings.

They knew our order before we sat down.

DeNae loved them.

“Efficient.”

John did not.

“I want to choose before someone reads my mind.”

His drink arrived.

He tasted it.

Paused.

Then took another sip.

“Fine.”

The Tourist Doll kept moving.

Finally I noticed something.

Every time the water shifted direction, the doll paused.

Not because it was being moved by the current.

Because it was listening to it.

Feeling it.

Then choosing a route.

I stopped.

“It’s navigating.”

Ziv looked at me.

“What?”

“It isn’t escaping.”

Julie studied the doll.

“It’s going somewhere.”

John nodded slowly.

“And deliberately selecting its route.”

Elon looked delighted.

“Oh, this is fantastic.”

Ziv pointed at him.

“No.”

“What?”

“You brought us here.”

“Yes.”

“This feels like your fault.”

“It is absolutely not my fault.”

I opened my journal.

OFFICIAL FIND: TOURIST DOLL

Then beneath it:

Additional finding:
Ziv purchased the only souvenir on the planet with an agenda.

The doll turned toward the far horizon.

And kept going.

So naturally…

we followed.

🐚 DeNae — Day One: Apparently Souvenirs Swim Here

I knew the trip was doomed the moment Tara opened her door wearing one slipper and a tiara.

Ziv’s doll was swimming through the canal.

Not floating.

Swimming.

Tara was thrilled.

Of course she was.

Five minutes later we were chasing it across Amphitrite in a sea-skimmer driven by a six-eyed alien who thought Lala screaming meant go faster.

I concentrated on the important things.

Nobody fell out.

Everyone had water.

And when Tara suddenly yelled, “ALIEN BAKERY!” in the middle of our pursuit, I made sure we stopped long enough to eat.

Priorities.

By afternoon, even John agreed the doll was navigating.

Tara immediately opened her journal.

I opened the snack bag.

Because if that little blue souvenir planned on leading us across an entire planet, somebody needed to be responsible.

Apparently that somebody was me.

DeNae’s Week-One Rule:
If the guild insists on following a runaway alien doll, at least make sure everyone has snacks. 😂🌊🥐

🌊🐚 AMPHITRITE: THE DOLL THAT KNEW THE WAY
Julie’s Five-Day Story
Oksana had called it a vacation.
Five peaceful days on Amphitrite. No mysteries, no emergencies, no saving anyone.
Tara had written VACATION across the first page of her handy-dandy journal and decorated it with stars, waves, two suspicious flying saucers, and what John claimed was a poorly drawn octopus.
By the end of the first morning, she had crossed out VACATION.

🐚 DAY 1 — “IT WAITED”
Found Item: Toy Tourist — Souvenirs from the Sea Planet
I noticed the little doll because it was swimming upstream.
Technically, dolls don't swim. They also don't climb out hotel windows, drop into canals, turn corners, or pause beneath bridges as if checking whether anyone is following.
This one did all four.
Its owner, Zhenya, came racing down the floating hotel steps just as Tara pointed across the canal.
“Sentient souvenir,” Tara announced.
John squinted at the tiny figure paddling away.
“Current.”
“It just turned left.”
“Cross-current.”
“It stopped.”
John looked again.
The doll was floating beside a piling.
Waiting.
Zhenya reached us, slightly breathless but doing an impressive job of pretending nothing about her morning was unusual.
“My souvenir fell in.”
Lala looked at me. “Fell with purpose.”
Laura tried not to laugh.
DeNae handed Zhenya a bottle of water because DeNae had already decided that chasing independently mobile merchandise required hydration.
The doll moved again.
That was when I started watching it differently.
It never got so far ahead that Zhenya lost sight of it. When she slowed, it slowed. When she chose the wrong walkway, it stopped until she noticed.
“It knows she's following,” I said.
John gave me a thoughtful look.
Tara immediately opened her journal.
OBSERVATION #1: DOLL DISPLAYS INTELLIGENCE. POSSIBLE ALIEN. POSSIBLE FAIRY. POSSIBLE BOTH.
“Please don’t encourage her,” John said.
Oksana, walking beside us, smiled in that maddening way she does when she already knows something and intends to let the rest of us work for it.
We followed the canal for nearly an hour.
At a transport junction, the doll chose a narrow channel leading away from the tourist district.
Zhenya stopped.
“That isn’t where my hotel is.”
The doll stopped too.
I looked from Zhenya to the little figure bobbing patiently in the water.
For the first time, I understood something.
It wasn't trying to get away from her.
It was making sure she came along.
And apparently, so were we.

🌊🐚 AMPHITRITE: WHERE THE WATER LED US
Laura’s Five-Day Story
Oksana had promised us five quiet days.
No quests.
No mysteries.
No emergencies.
Just Double D’s Guild, a beautiful water planet, and enough floating cafés to keep Tara occupied for at least an afternoon.
Then somebody’s souvenir climbed out a window.
So much for quiet.

🐚 DAY 1 — “SHE KEPT LOOKING BACK”
Found Item: Toy Tourist — Souvenirs from the Sea Planet
The first thing I noticed about Zhenya wasn't that her doll had escaped.
It was how embarrassed she was about chasing it.
She came hurrying down the hotel steps pretending she wasn't hurrying at all, as though tourists regularly pursued their souvenirs through public canals before breakfast.
Tara was already leaning over the railing.
“It turned by itself.”
John stood beside her.
“The water turned.”
“No, the water continued straight.”
John frowned.
Tara smiled triumphantly and opened her handy-dandy journal.
The little Toy Tourist floated halfway down the canal.
Then stopped.
Zhenya reached us.
“My souvenir fell out the window.”
Lala watched the doll turn around the next piling.
“With remarkable decision-making skills.”
Julie was studying it too.
“It’s waiting for her.”
Zhenya laughed nervously.
“Probably caught on something.”
But I wasn't watching the doll anymore.
I was watching Zhenya.
Every time it moved farther away, she looked worried.
Every time it stopped, she relaxed.
There was something strange about that.
Not frightening.
Almost… considerate.
DeNae handed her some water.
“You'll need this.”
“For what?”
DeNae glanced toward the doll.
“I have a feeling.”
We followed.
Past floating shops.
Across a narrow bridge.
Through a market where a fish vendor shouted something none of us understood.
The Toy Tourist continued just far enough ahead to keep us moving.
Once, Zhenya chose the wrong walkway.
The doll stopped completely.
She backed up.
It moved again.
I smiled.
“She doesn't want to lose you.”
Zhenya looked at me.
“You think it's a she?”
“I think she knows exactly where you're going.”
Tara wrote that down immediately.
John groaned.
But when we reached the edge of the tourist district and the doll turned into a canal none of us recognized, even he stopped joking.
Zhenya hesitated.
I slipped my arm through hers.
“We don't have to know where we're going yet.”
She looked at me.
Then at the little doll waiting ahead.
“That doesn't bother you?”
“Of course it does.”
I smiled.
“But you're not going alone.”
And that was how our vacation became something else.

🌊🐚 AMPHITRITE: VACATION, ALLEGEDLY
Lala’s Five-Day Story
Oksana said we were going to Amphitrite for a vacation.
I heard the word vacation and pictured floating cafés, lovely drinks, and several consecutive hours in which nobody needed rescuing.
Tara heard the word water planet and packed her handy-dandy journal, three pens, binoculars, and the jeweled tiara she insists is absolutely not a tinfoil crown.
John brought common sense.
DeNae brought snacks.
Laura brought kindness.
Julie brought organization.
I brought realistic expectations.
Mine were the only ones that survived Day One.

🐚 DAY 1 — “THE SOUVENIR HAS LEFT THE BUILDING”
Found Item: Toy Tourist — Souvenirs from the Sea Planet
I was drinking coffee when a doll swam past the hotel.
That is not a sentence I expected to say on vacation.
The doll belonged to a woman named Zhenya, who came running downstairs five minutes later pretending this was merely an inconvenient ownership dispute.
“My souvenir fell into the canal.”
“It appears to have fallen with ambition,” I said.
Tara was already hanging over the railing.
“It turned against the current.”
John looked.
“Maybe there’s another current.”
“It just waited at the corner.”
“Debris.”
“It looked back.”
John gave her a long stare.
Tara opened her journal.
CASE ONE: POSSIBLE SENTIENT ALIEN SOUVENIR.
She added a star.
Then another star.
Then a small flying saucer.
Julie noticed what the rest of us were slowly accepting.
The doll wasn't escaping.
It moved ahead, stopped, waited for Zhenya, then moved again.
Laura took Zhenya gently by the arm.
“We’ll help you catch her.”
“Her?” Zhenya asked.
Laura shrugged. “She seems determined.”
DeNae handed everyone snacks.
This is why DeNae would survive the end of civilization while the rest of us argued about whether the apocalypse had proper signage.
We followed the Toy Tourist through three floating neighborhoods, a market, two bridges, and one canal that smelled suspiciously like seaweed soup.
At one intersection, Zhenya started down the wrong path.
The doll stopped.
Zhenya backed up.
The doll continued.
Tara wrote:
UPDATE: IT IS LEADING US. JOHN HAS NO EXPLANATION.
“I have several,” John said.
“You just don’t like mine.”
“That is also true.”
By noon, we were far outside the tourist district.
I looked at Oksana.
“You knew this was going to happen.”
She smiled.
That smile should be regulated.
Ahead of us, the Toy Tourist disappeared around another bend.
And because apparently none of us possessed the instinct required to return to the hotel, we followed.
Vacation status:
Compromised.

Guild Quest. Day 1. Amphitrite. Vacation Did Not Go As Planned

AMPHITRITE: VACATION DID NOT GO AS PLANNED
Five days on Neptune, where Ziv intended to relax—and one souvenir had other plans.

Welcome to Neptune

I should begin by stating for the record that I did not believe Elon when he said this was going to be a vacation .

I fly my own airplane. I understand machines. I understand navigation, weather, fuel, and the basic principle that when someone invites seven members of the Explorer's Guild on a private trip to Neptune and uses the words “relaxing little getaway,” you should immediately inspect the emergency equipment.

Elon had been talking about Neptune forever. So when he finally announced that the ship was ready and asked whether the Guild wanted to come along, Tara had accepted before he'd finished the sentence.

“NEPTUNE!” she yelled, opening her Handy Dandy journal. “John, do you realize what this means?”

"Yes. We're going to Neptune."

“It means ALIENS . ”

“We already know aliens exist.”

“Exactly! Finally you're making progress.”

She adjusted the sparkling tiara she insists is not a tin-foil crown.

I looked at Elon .

“You invited her. ”

“I invited all of you.”

“Then you knew the risks.”

DeNae had packed enough snacks for a six-month expedition, Julie had prepared an organized list of everything she wanted to see, Laura had somehow brought gifts for people we hadn't met yet, and Lala had packed three bags while claiming two of them contained “essential diplomatic equipment.”

I later discovered this meant shoes.

Oksana arrived last, carrying one small bag.

Naturally .

I have never understood how a woman who appears prepared for every conceivable emergency can travel with less luggage than I take on my airplane for a weekend.

“John,” Oksana said as she passed me, “stop wondering what's in my bag.”

I hadn't said anything .

That's Oksana .

Rowan Sparkle Goblin climbed aboard behind her, scattering enough glitter through Elon's spacecraft that I suspected it would remain in the ventilation system until approximately the year 2140.

And so eight humans and one sparkle-producing magical creature departed for Neptune.

The locals called the planet Amphitrite .

There was apparently another translation floating around that called it Amphititra , but Tara settled the matter approximately eleven seconds after we landed.

She stepped onto the arrival platform, stared across an endless blue ocean beneath an enormous luminous sky and announced:

“It's Neptune. ”

Nobody argued.

Almost the entire planet was water. Cities floated upon gigantic platforms. Hotels rose and fell gently with the waves. Transparent canals wound between buildings. Boats replaced cars, restaurants drifted from neighborhood to neighborhood, and the tiny pieces of exposed land were called continents by the locals with such solemnity that even Lala managed not to laugh.

For nearly seven minutes .

Our first dinner was spectacular.

We ate at a floating restaurant operated by three cheerful blue ETs with six arms between them and apparently no concept of portion control. There were glowing noodles, little golden pastries that popped open when you touched them, something resembling shrimp that sang briefly before being dipped in sauce, and a magnificent turquoise dessert that changed flavor every time you took a bite.

DeNae immediately started asking for recipes.

Julie wanted to know whether the singing shrimp were actually animals.

Laura apologized to her before eating it.

Lala ordered another .

Tara wrote SINGING SHRIMP!!! in her Handy Dandy journal and underlined it four times.

Elon was discussing propulsion technology with one of the ETs.

Oksana calmly drank tea as though this happened every Thursday.

And I remember thinking that perhaps—just perhaps—Elon had been right.

Maybe this was actually going to be a vacation.

That was before we met Ziv.

Ziv had come to Neptune for exactly the same reason we had.

To relax .

Specifically, she informed us, to relax .

She wasn't interested in saving anybody, joining an expedition, discovering ancient mysteries, or learning why Neptune worked differently from every other planet she'd visited. Her five-day plan involved sightseeing, food, shopping, souvenirs and absolutely no responsibility whatsoever.

I liked Ziv immediately .

She also had an interesting habit.

When she didn't understand something, she rarely asked.

She watched .

She listened .

She figured it out herself.

This worked surprisingly well on Neptune, where apparently everyone except us already understood things like why restaurant tables occasionally floated away, why elevators moved sideways and why one should never whistle at a purple boat after sunset.

On our first afternoon together, Ziv stopped at a souvenir stall on the embankment.

Among shells, glowing stones and little models of floating houses stood a peculiar doll shaped like one of the local aquatic inhabitants.

Ziv picked it up .

“I'm buying this. ”

Tara peered over her shoulder.

“I like her. ”

“You don't know her. ”

“I can sense these things.”

I sighed .

“It's a doll, Tara. ”

Tara gave me the look she reserves specifically for statements she intends to remind me about later.

Ziv purchased the Tourist Doll , carried it back to the hotel and placed it beside the transparent wall overlooking the canal.

“A colleague,” she said.

That evening we ate another unnecessarily enormous dinner, watched three moons rise over the water and finally retired to our rooms.

Everything was peaceful .

At least until morning .

Because sometime during the night—

Ziv's colleague left.

DAY 1 — “THE MORNING BEGAN WITHOUT HER”

My morning began with pounding on my door.

“JOHN! ”

I opened one eye .

“JOHN! ”

That was Tara .

There are certain sounds a man learns not to ignore.

I opened the door.

Tara stood there in pajamas, jeweled tiara crooked on her head and Handy Dandy journal tucked under one arm.

“The doll escaped. ”

I stared at her .

“The what? ”

“The doll. ”

“Tara, dolls don't escape.”

Behind her appeared Lala .

“This one apparently had travel plans.”

Then Laura .

“Ziv can't find her anywhere.”

Julie was already dressed.

DeNae arrived carrying coffee and breakfast pastries because, unlike everyone else in the Guild, DeNae understands what constitutes an actual emergency.

Oksana appeared behind them.

Fully dressed .

Of course .

Elon came down the corridor fastening his jacket.

“What's going on? ”

I accepted a pastry from DeNae.

“Apparently we're conducting a search-and-rescue operation for a souvenir.”

“It's not a souvenir,” Tara said.

“You called it a souvenir yesterday.”

“That was before it escaped.”

There was no point continuing.

We entered Ziv's room .

The shelf beside the window was empty.

We checked beneath the bed.

Nothing .

Behind the chair.

Nothing .

Inside the closet .

Nothing .

Ziv stood with her hands on her hips.

“I know exactly where I put it.”

Julie crouched beside the shelf.

“Could it have fallen and rolled?”

“Into another dimension?” Lala asked.

“Don't encourage Tara,” I said.

Too late .

Tara's journal was already open.

“Possible interdimensional souvenir migration,” she muttered while writing.

Then Laura, who had been looking through the transparent wall, quietly said:

“Um...everyone? ”

We joined her .

There, in the canal below us, was the Tourist Doll .

Floating upright .

Moving steadily away from the hotel.

Ziv opened the window.

“HEY! ”

The doll continued .

A local ET on the neighboring balcony was drinking something steaming from a spiral-shaped cup.

Ziv looked at him .

He looked at Ziv .

This would have been an excellent opportunity to ask whether autonomous souvenir migration was common on Neptune.

Instead Ziv said :

“Good morning. ”

The ET raised his cup.

“Good morning. ”

Ziv closed the window.

Lala stared at her .

“You're not going to ask him?”

“No. ”

“Why? ”

“I'll figure it out. ”

I liked her more every minute.

Three minutes later, all of us were downstairs.

The Tourist Doll had already reached the next canal.

Elon rented us a long silver skimmer with enough seats for everyone. I took one look at the controls.

“I'll drive. ”

Elon looked at me .

“Why? ”

“Because I'm a pilot.”

“So am I.”

“Yes, but I'm already sitting here.”

He laughed and climbed into the seat beside me.

The chase began .

And I use the word chase deliberately.

Because within five minutes, I knew that doll was not drifting .

The current flowed west .

The doll went north .

I checked the water .

Then the navigation display.

Then the doll.

“That isn't possible.”

Tara leaned between the seats.

“Would you like me to write down the exact time you said that?”

“No. ”

“Already did. ”

The doll reached an intersection of three channels.

It stopped .

Actually stopped .

A transport boat passed .

Then another .

Only when the channel was clear did the doll turn right.

Elon looked at me .

“Did you see that? ”

“I saw the current change.”

“The current didn't change.”

“It could have. ”

“It didn't. ”

Behind us, Lala whispered loudly to Laura:

“His skepticism is injured. Don't approach suddenly.”

“I can hear you. ”

DeNae passed me another pastry.

“For emotional support.”

We followed .

The doll began leading us through neighborhoods tourists apparently never visited. Floating houses became smaller and brighter. Children with enormous silver eyes waved from balconies. A family of lavender-skinned ETs passed us in a boat shaped like a seashell.

Julie waved enthusiastically.

“They're adorable. ”

“You say that about everything that isn't trying to eat us,” I said.

“I've liked several things that were trying to eat us.”

Fair point.

At midday the doll stopped outside a floating café.

Just stopped .

Ziv stared at it .

“No. ”

The doll was bobbed gently .

“We are not stopping for lunch.”

DeNae looked offended .

“Yes, we are. ”

Ten minutes later we were eating bowls of warm coral-colored soup, crispy sea-root fritters and Neptune cloud cakes covered with sparkling sugar.

The doll waited outside .

Tara pointed her spoon towards it.

“See? She knew we were hungry.”

DeNae nodded approvingly .

“Smart doll. ”

“You two are assigning motives to an inanimate object.”

From outside came a tiny tap against the window.

Everyone slowly turned towards me.

I continued eating .

“I heard nothing. ”

After lunch the doll resumed its journey.

By late afternoon there could no longer be any serious question about what was happening.

At every channel junction, it paused.

At every transport lane, it waited for traffic.

Twice it changed direction before an enormous cargo vessel crossed our route.

And once—this was the part I found particularly irritating—it floated backward about ten feet until our skimmer caught up.

Then continued .

Ziv folded her arms.

“It's waiting for us.”

Tara beamed .

“YES. ”

Elon nodded towards the doll.

“It's definitely navigating.”

Julie studied it thoughtfully.

“Maybe it isn't running away.”

Laura smiled .

“Maybe it wants us to follow.”

Lala leaned back .

“So our vacation is now being organized by a doll.”

“Could be worse,” DeNae said. “Tara could be organizing it.”

“HEY! ”

Oksana had been unusually quiet.

I looked at her .

“You know something. ”

She smiled .

“I know we're going in the correct direction.”

“How? ”

“Oksana knows everything,” Laura said.

“That is not an answer.”

“It usually is,” Lala replied.

Ahead of us, the canal widened.

Beyond it stretched miles of glittering Neptune water and floating neighborhoods none of us recognized.

The Tourist Doll paused at the entrance.

Turned slightly .

And although I will deny this if questioned later, I had the distinct impression that the little thing was checking to make sure we were still behind her.

Then she continued .

Ziv stared after her.

“So...we follow? ”

Tara snapped her Handy Dandy journal shut.

“Obviously.”

Elon grinned .

“I'm in. ”

Julie and Laura agreed immediately.

DeNae checked our remaining snacks.

Lala stretched her legs across the seat.

“I didn't travel all the way to Neptune to lose an argument with a doll.”

Oksana simply smiled .

Everyone looked at me .

I looked at the disappearing Tourist Doll.

Then at the controls .

Then at seven people who had clearly already made the decision for me.

“All right,” I said, starting the skimmer.

“But for the record, I still don't believe the doll is alive. ”

Tara immediately reopened her journal.

“What are you writing?”

She smiled .

“Nothing. ”

I knew perfectly well what she was writing.

And somewhere ahead of us, the FOUND Tourist Doll made another deliberate turn and led the Explorer's Guild farther from our hotel—and straight toward whatever Neptune had waiting for us next. ✨

Day One should have been the moment I realized our vacation was over.

Instead, I told myself we'd retrieve the doll, turn around, have a nice dinner and be back at the hotel before dark.

In retrospect, that may have been the least intelligent conclusion I reached during the entire trip..

🐚 DAY 1 — “THE MORNING BEGAN WITHOUT HER”

Day One should have been the moment I realized our vacation was over.

Instead, I told myself we'd retrieve the doll, turn around, have a nice dinner and be back at the hotel before dark.

In retrospect, that may have been the least intelligent conclusion I reached during the entire trip.
