<i> Тема дня: Марсианский тушкан </i> <br>

<br>
<br>

<i> Тема дня: коллекция «Космические минералы» </i> <br>

<i>  Тема дня: коллекция «Марсианские блюда» </i> <br>

<i>  Тема дня: Марсианский фрукт </i> <br>

</i>  <br>

</p> <br>

Guilde To the Manor Born

Merci 🥰

⚖ DAY 3 — “THE SAFE DISTANCE”
Found Item: Purpose and Meaning — “Accounts Payable” Collection
The scales were waiting.
On one side lay Elias’s wish:
Never cause suffering to someone he loved.
The other side was empty.
“What would you give up?” the Stronghold seemed to ask.
Elias thought for a long time.
Then he understood.
“Closeness.”
My heart sank.
If nobody came close enough to depend on him, trust him, or love him deeply enough to be hurt by him...
his wish could be guaranteed.
The scales balanced.
And the Stronghold showed us his life.
It was peaceful.
People liked Elias.
He was invited everywhere.
He had friends for dinner, colleagues who respected him, neighbors who waved.
Nobody fought with him.
Nobody cried because of him.
Nobody asked him to stay.
Nobody needed him enough to be angry when he left.
That was the worst part.
His life wasn't lonely in the way loneliness usually looks.
It was full of people.
They simply never got close.
A woman loved him once.
I could tell before he could.
She nearly told him.
But something in the bargain kept the distance between them exactly wide enough.
She eventually married someone else.
Elias attended the wedding.
He wished her well.
She was happy.
The Token had kept its promise.
Years passed.
One night we watched an older Elias sit alone at a table.
Beside him rested the little book called Purpose and Meaning.
It opened.
Words appeared.
To matter to someone is to become capable of hurting them.
Elias shut his eyes.
I thought about Lala.
My twin.
There had been times she'd hurt my feelings without meaning to.
There had certainly been times I'd annoyed her.
Probably before breakfast.
But I wouldn't trade away the closeness to avoid any of it.
I looked at the others.
Tara and DeNae.
Julie and John.
Oksana watching all of us with that expression that usually meant she had understood something three hours before we did.
Our friendship wasn't precious because nobody ever disappointed anybody.
It was precious because disappointment didn't end it.
Elias opened his eyes.
“This is what I paid for.”
Oksana nodded.
“A life where you cannot wound anyone.”
He looked around the empty room.
“And nobody can really reach me.”
The vision disappeared.
We were back beside the scales.
Elias stared at the Token of Fortune.
Then he placed it down.
Carefully.
“I don't want that life.”
Lala exhaled.
“Good. Because I was already planning to irritate you tomorrow.”
Elias laughed.
And I smiled.
Sometimes love doesn't mean preventing every wound.
Sometimes it means being worth coming back to afterward.

⚖ DAY 3 — “THE MAN WHO WAS NEVER WRONG”
Found Item: Purpose and Meaning — “Accounts Payable” Collection
The scales wanted payment.
Of course they did.
Nothing says “mystical enlightenment” like hidden fees.
On one side lay Elias’s wish:
NO REGRETS.
The other side waited.
“What do I give up?” Elias asked.
The answer came to him slowly.
“Doubt.”
I closed my eyes.
“Oh, this is going to be awful.”
He placed doubt on the scale.
Everything disappeared.
We found ourselves years in Elias's future.
He was successful.
Very successful.
He had money, authority, an impressive home and the confidence of a man who had apparently never once wondered whether he should shut up.
I lasted eleven minutes.
Future Elias argued with a colleague.
He was wrong.
No doubt.
He lost a friendship.
Still no doubt.
He made a financial decision that failed spectacularly.
His explanation?
The circumstances had been unreasonable.
“Of course,” I muttered.
Laura elbowed me.
“What?”
“You're enjoying this.”
“I enjoy being right. Unlike Elias, I occasionally verify it.”
Then we saw something that wasn't funny.
Someone Elias loved stood across from him.
“You hurt me,” she said.
Elias answered calmly.
“I did what I believed was right.”
“I know.”
He waited.
She waited.
That was it.
He couldn't say I'm sorry.
Not because he didn't care.
Because apologizing required admitting that perhaps the choice deserved reconsideration.
She walked away.
Elias watched her go.
No regret.
But loneliness remained.
That was worse.
On his desk lay the little book called Purpose and Meaning.
Its pages opened.
A sentence appeared:
Regret is not always punishment for a mistake. Sometimes it is the reason the mistake becomes a lesson.
Elias read it twice.
I stood beside him.
“For the record, I've regretted many excellent things.”
He glanced at me.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It doesn't have to. Some things were worth doing even though I'd do them differently now.”
He thought about that.
Behind us, DeNae said, “That's called growing up.”
Tara whispered, “Are we required to?”
“No,” John said. “Apparently not.”
The vision dissolved.
We returned to the Stronghold.
Elias looked at the empty scales for a long time.
Then he said, “I thought regret meant the past had beaten me.”
Oksana shook her head.
“Sometimes regret simply means the past taught you something.”
Elias nodded.
I handed him the Purpose and Meaning book.
“Well, there you go.”
He looked at me.
“What?”
“The universe's return policy.”
And for once, he had absolutely no argument.

👑 DAY TWO — ONLY ONE

The new silver line led us into a round room containing several glowing pedestals.

Above them appeared the words:

CHOOSE WHAT YOU WANT MOST.

“Oh, absolutely not,” DeNae said.

Smart woman.

Each pedestal showed something different.

Adventure.

Knowledge.

Love.

Success.

Security.

Recognition.

A life without fear.

John folded his arms.

“There’s a catch.”

Lala nodded.

“There is always a catch.”

Laura quietly studied the choices while Julie attempted to determine whether the pedestals were arranged according to some mathematical pattern.

I walked around them twice.

Then three times.

Then wandered off because a glowing constellation on the ceiling looked exactly like a llama.

ADD remains undefeated.

Eventually I returned.

My greatest temptation wasn’t riches or fame.

It was certainty.

A life where I always knew the right decision.

No wondering.

No mistakes.

No “well THAT seemed like a good idea at the time.”

I reached toward it.

Then stopped.

Because suddenly I realized something horrible.

If I always knew the right answer…

I would never really choose.

I stepped away.

Rowan smiled.

The pedestal changed.

Sitting there was the Sign of Glory.

Apparently resisting temptation counted.

I knew I liked this fortress.

✨ DAY TWO WRAP-UP

Found: Sign of Glory
Temptation: Absolute certainty.
Did I take it? Nope.
Reason: I refuse to let destiny steal my chaos.
Lala’s contribution: “Without questionable decisions, Tara would lose 80% of her personality.”
DeNae: “Ninety.”
Handy Dandy Journal Note: Knowing everything sounds wonderful until you realize surprise is part of living.

👑 DAY TWO — READ THE FINE PRINT

The silver line led us into a round chamber filled with glowing pedestals.

Above them appeared:

CHOOSE WHAT YOU WANT MOST.

I stopped walking.

“No.”

Tara looked at me.

“You haven’t even seen the choices yet.”

“I’ve seen enough.”

Because whenever a magical fortress says you can have exactly what you want, there are usually three possibilities:

1. It’s lying.
2. It’s cursed.
3. There are hidden fees.

And I have balanced enough checkbooks in my life to know that number three is always the one that gets you.

The pedestals glowed brighter.

Adventure.

Knowledge.

Love.

Success.

Security.

Recognition.

A life without fear.

Tara wandered between them like someone had dropped her into a celestial Costco with no spending limit.

John folded his arms.

“There’s a catch.”

“THANK YOU.”

Finally. A man speaking my language.

Lala nodded.

“There is always a catch.”

Laura quietly studied the choices.

Julie started analyzing their placement.

Rowan leaned toward one of the pedestals.

I caught the back of his coat.

“No touching.”

“I was just looking.”

“You sparkle when you lie.”

He grinned.

Oksana, naturally, was watching all of us with the serene expression of someone who had already read the terms and conditions.

I walked around the room.

No contract.

No price tag.

No warning label.

Nothing.

That was worse.

I looked toward the ceiling.

“Where’s the fine print?”

The Stronghold did not answer.

“Exactly.”

Tara had wandered away from the others.

I found her staring at another pedestal that hadn’t been obvious at first.

Its glow was quieter.

Sharper.

Above it appeared one word:

CERTAINTY

I knew immediately why she had stopped.

Tara likes adventure.

She likes mystery.

She likes wondering whether aliens are watching us through satellites and whether fairies have unionized.

But she also hates wondering if she made the wrong decision.

The pedestal offered a life where she would always know.

Right choice.

Right road.

Right answer.

No second-guessing.

No mistakes.

No lying awake three years later thinking, Well THAT was stupid.

Her hand moved toward it.

I moved closer.

Not to stop her.

Yet.

Because this wasn’t my choice.

That was the annoying part.

The Stronghold seemed to understand that too.

Tara stared into the light.

Then her face changed.

She pulled her hand back.

“If I always knew the right answer,” she said quietly, “would I ever really choose?”

I smiled.

There she was.

“Good.”

She looked at me.

“Good?”

“Keep your chaos.”

Lala snorted.

“Without questionable decisions, Tara loses eighty percent of her personality.”

“Ninety,” I said.

Tara turned around.

“I can hear both of you.”

“We know.”

The Certainty pedestal flickered.

Then changed.

The light collapsed inward and formed a golden emblem.

The Sign of Glory.

Rowan gasped.

“Pretty.”

“You may look.”

He clasped his hands.

Progress.

Tara picked up the Sign of Glory.

I immediately leaned closer.

“Did anything happen?”

“No.”

“Did you feel a contract activate?”

“No.”

“Any sudden urge to surrender your soul?”

“No.”

“Excellent.”

John raised one eyebrow.

“You’re checking for hidden fees?”

“Obviously.”

I inspected the pedestal.

No writing.

No symbols.

No clause stating acceptance constitutes forfeiture of free will.

Still suspicious.

Oksana finally spoke.

“Not every choice requires payment.”

I looked at her.

“That sounds exactly like something written before a payment section.”

She smiled.

I didn’t like that smile.

Then the chamber doors opened.

Tara tucked the Sign of Glory away.

Rowan sparkled.

Julie made a note.

Laura smiled.

Lala said, “Well, nobody sold their soul.”

“Yet,” John added.

I nodded.

Finally, people were learning.

Then Tara headed toward the new doorway.

I followed.

“Wait.”

She stopped.

“What?”

“Did anyone check whether that Sign of Glory has annual maintenance fees?”

Tara stared at me.

“No.”

“Fine. I’ll add it to the list.”

And that is why this guild survives.

✨ DAY TWO WRAP-UP

Found: Sign of Glory
Temptation: Certainty
Hidden fees discovered: None. Which remains suspicious.
Contracts signed: Zero
Souls accidentally surrendered: Also zero
DeNae’s primary contribution: Attempting to audit a magical temptation chamber
John: Finally taking financial skepticism seriously
Lala: Correctly estimated that Tara is 90% questionable decisions
Rowan: Touched nothing without permission. Mostly.
Oksana: Claimed not everything has a price. Investigation ongoing.

DeNae’s Practical Note:

If someone offers you everything you want with no stated cost, do not assume it is free.

Assume the invoice is coming later.

Tomorrow we apparently meet the scales.

Finally.

My department. 😆

The scales waited.

On one side rested the Icon of Abundance.

Above the empty side appeared three choices:

CLEAR MIND

PURPOSE AND MEANING

MORAL BONDS

Nobody joked.

Elias walked around the scales.

"I choose the price?"

Apparently so.

“That is remarkably unpleasant.”

“Finally,” Lala said, “something everyone agrees on.”

Clear Mind was immediately rejected.

“What good is freedom if you can't think clearly enough to use it?” Elias said.

Moral Bonds lasted only slightly longer.

Laura shook her head. “You'd still have everything, but you might stop caring what happens to anyone else.”

“No,” Elias said. "Not that."

That left Purpose and Meaning.

Elias stared at the words.

DeNae was first to say it.

“You're thinking you can live without some grand purpose.”

“Yes.”

Julie frowned. “That's not necessarily what it means.”

"I make my own purpose."

Tara tapped her pencil against the Handy Dandy Notebook.

“That's what I'd say too.”

“Which should frighten him,” I said.

“HEY.”

Elias smiled faintly.

"I don't need destiny to give my life meaning. If I have complete freedom, I'll decide what matters.”

Oksana finally stepped forward.

“Perhaps.”

Elias looked at her.

“You disagree?”

“No. I'm wondering whether you're offering the Stronghold something because you believe you don't need it—or because you don't understand what losing it means.”

That silenced everyone.

But the choice remained Elias's.

He picked up the silver token marked PURPOSE AND MEANING.

Laura caught his wrist.

“Elias.”

He looked at her.

“Don't do it because we're curious.”

For the first time since meeting us, Elias looked genuinely touched.

“I won't.”

Laura released him.

He placed the token on the scale.

The scales balanced.

Everything went black.

I opened my eyes in a mansion.

"Everybody here?" I called.

"Here!" Tara shouted.

“Unfortunately,” Lala added.

"John," Laura answered.

“Here,” Julie said.

“So am I,” DeNae called from somewhere that smelled suspiciously like a kitchen.

Oksana appeared beside me.

“We're not actually here.”

"I was afraid you'd say that."

We found Elias in a huge glass office overlooking a city.

He was perhaps fifteen years older.

And fantastically rich.

The Icon had kept its promise.

He owned companies. Homes. Aircraft. Investments. He could travel anywhere tomorrow—or tonight.

Nobody controlled his time.

Nobody controlled his choices.

Nobody could tell him no.

And Elias looked utterly bored.

An assistant entered.

"The children's hospital foundation called again."

“How much do they want?”

"Two million."

“Give them four.”

Laura smiled.

Then Elias added:

"That should take care of it."

The smile disappeared.

He wasn't cruel.

That was worse.

He simply didn't care.

Later we watched him attend a magnificent dinner with people who laughed at everything he said.

He left early.

We watched him begin projects and abandon them.

Travel to extraordinary places and leave after two days.

Buy beautiful things and forget where he'd put them.

People admired him.

People envied him.

People needed him.

Nobody seemed to matter to him very much.

Tara closed her notebook.

"I don't like this future."

DeNae shook her head. “He has everything he wanted and nothing he wants to get up for.”

Julie watched the older Elias standing alone beside an enormous window.

"He didn't lose happiness."

"No," Oksana said. "He lost the reason happiness matters."

Lala's voice was unusually quiet.

"Can we undo it?"

Elias turned.

For the first time, the older Elias could see us.

He stared at the seven people from a life he barely remembered.

“Who are you?”

That hurt more than I expected.

Laura stepped forward.

"You knew us."

"I don't think so."

“You did.”

Elias shrugged.

“Then I'm sure it was interesting.”

And walked away.

Laura's eyes filled.

That did it.

I grabbed Elias—the real Elias, standing invisibly beside us—by the shoulder.

"Still think this only costs you something?"

He looked at Laura.

Then at all seven of us.

"No."

The seven silver lines suddenly became visible throughout the room.

But they were fading.

Elias watched them disappear one by one.

Tara.

Julie.

DeNae.

Lala.

Laura.

Oksana.

Mine was last.

He reached for it.

His hand passed through.

"I didn't choose to lose you."

"No," I said. "You chose the price. Losing us was part of what the price meant.”

The mansion vanished.

Elias awoke on the cold floor of the Stronghold.

The Guild lay scattered around him.

Only minutes had passed.

Tara sat up.

"I officially withdraw my support for supernatural financial planning."

DeNae hugged her.

“Best decision you've made all week.”

Julie looked at Elias.

"You all right?"

"No."

"Good," Lala said.

Everyone looked at her.

"What? If he'd said yes, that would worry me.”

Laura squeezed Elias's hand.

He squeezed back.

Oksana smiled.

And I noticed Elias didn't let go immediately.
