Day 3:
Elias had made his choice. He was ready to embrace the future presented to him. Now he was face with the balance and a new choice. What was he ready to pay for that future?
He suddenly realised he was holding a small object in his hand, a pin inscribed with the words ‘Moral bounds’. Maybe that was exactly what he needed to pay to achieve the power that had been shown to him. He needed to renounce his moral bounds, be ready to act in ways that were not ethical or fair, forget his principles and do whatever was necessary in order to become the supreme ruler of the kingdom. Elias carefully placed the pin on the scales and then ….
Elias woke up in a sumptuous room. There were servants bringing him breakfast, helping him get dressed, calling him ‘His majesty’, ‘His excellence’, making sure his every wish, no matter how insignificant, was fulfilled. Once he was ready, he looked in the mirror and was shocked to see his reflexion. He was at least twenty years older! He walked, slightly dazed, into a great hall, sat on a throne raised upon a platform and all the people filling the hall bowed to him. It was exactly like the vision he had had before.
Slowly he noticed that people, although always polite and deferent, looked at him some with fear, some with apprehension, some with hatred in their eyes. What had he done to reach to that point, to deserve that animosity? Had the price paid been too high?

⚖ DAY THREE — THERE WAS A BILL AFTER ALL

Naturally, the Stronghold had a billing department.

We entered another chamber.

Two enormous scales appeared.

One side held everything each of us had chosen.

The other asked:

WHAT WOULD YOU GIVE UP TO HAVE IT?

Silence.

Even I stopped joking.

Julie studied hers carefully.

Laura immediately shook her head.

John muttered, “Now we’re finally seeing the contract.”

DeNae stared at me.

“Do not trade anything important.”

“I know.”

“Your definition of important concerns me.”

Fair.

My pedestal offered certainty again.

The price?

Curiosity.

I actually gasped.

“That’s rude.”

John laughed.

The Stronghold showed me the life I could have.

Every decision correct.

Every danger avoided.

Every outcome known.

I was successful.

Safe.

Comfortable.

And completely miserable.

There were no mysterious roads.

No ridiculous adventures.

No conspiracy theories.

No wondering whether fairies might secretly control airport baggage systems.

Worst of all…

There was no Handy Dandy Journal.

I looked horrified.

DeNae whispered, “We’ve lost her.”

“I WOULD RATHER LIVE IN A DUMPSTER.”

I shoved the Clear Mind Lighter off the pedestal.

The vision shattered.

We were back inside the Stronghold.

And somehow Oksana looked proud.

✨ DAY THREE WRAP-UP

Found: Clear Mind Lighter
Price Offered: My curiosity.
Answer: ABSOLUTELY NOT.
John: “Finally, a rational decision.”
Me: “Write down the date.”
DeNae’s emergency provision: Brownies. Because existential crises require chocolate.

Handy Dandy Journal Note: A perfect life without curiosity is just a beautifully decorated cage.

⚖ DAY THREE — THE AUDIT OF DESTINY

I knew it.

I KNEW IT.

Yesterday the Stronghold offered everyone exactly what they wanted with no visible price.

No contract.

No fees.

No consequences.

Suspicious.

Today we walked into the next chamber and found two enormous scales waiting for us.

I stopped in the doorway.

“Finally.”

Tara looked at me.

“Finally?”

“Yes. The invoice.”

Above the scales appeared:

WHAT WOULD YOU GIVE UP TO HAVE IT?

I folded my arms.

“Called it.”

John nodded.

“Called it yesterday.”

“We can share credit.”

This was my room.

At last, the Zodiac Stronghold had stopped pretending to be mysterious and had become something I understood.

Accounts payable.

Every choice went onto one side of the scales.

Every cost went onto the other.

No vague promises.

No free magical upgrades.

No “terms apply.”

Just numbers.

Well.

Metaphorical numbers.

Still.

Progress.

Julie studied her scales like she was preparing a spreadsheet.

Laura looked at hers for approximately three seconds and shook her head.

“No.”

Excellent.

Lala stared at hers.

“How much sarcasm is considered essential?”

“All of it,” I said.

“Good.”

Rowan climbed onto the base of one scale.

I immediately pointed.

“Off.”

“But I weigh hardly anything.”

“That is not the point.”

He hopped down.

One cat contained.

Seven remaining.

Then I saw Tara.

Of course.

She was standing in front of the same thing she had been offered yesterday.

CERTAINTY.

On the other side of the scale appeared the price.

CURIOSITY.

I actually felt offended on her behalf.

Tara gasped.

“That’s rude.”

“Yes.”

John laughed.

“This place knows you.”

“That is not helping.”

I stepped closer.

“Do not trade anything important.”

“I know.”

I looked at her.

“Your definition of important concerns me.”

Fairly, she did not argue.

Then the Stronghold showed her what she would get.

A life where every decision was correct.

Every road was safe.

Every answer was known before she asked the question.

No bad choices.

No accidental disasters.

No wondering.

No uncertainty.

Perfect.

I watched Tara’s face.

At first she looked impressed.

Then confused.

Then deeply alarmed.

The vision kept going.

No strange roads.

No magical detours.

No conspiracy theories.

No stopping because a cloud looked suspicious.

No wondering whether fairies controlled airport baggage systems.

No aliens.

No “what if?”

No Handy Dandy Journal.

Tara looked horrified.

I knew it was over.

She turned toward me.

“There’s no journal.”

“I noticed.”

“No weird adventures.”

“Nope.”

“No theories.”

“Nope.”

“No wondering.”

“Nope.”

She looked back at the vision.

“I WOULD RATHER LIVE IN A DUMPSTER.”

John nodded.

“Finally, a rational decision.”

I immediately reached into my bag.

“Brownie?”

“Yes.”

Obviously.

Tara grabbed the Clear Mind Lighter and shoved it off the pedestal.

The vision shattered.

The scales vanished.

And just like that, the deal was gone.

No signature.

No exchange.

No catastrophic magical debt.

I exhaled.

Oksana smiled.

That proud little all-knowing smile.

I looked at her.

“You knew she wouldn’t take it.”

Oksana said nothing.

“Of course you did.”

Then I looked around the room.

Julie was still analyzing.

Laura had rejected hers.

Lala appeared to be negotiating with her own scale.

John was inspecting the mechanism.

Rowan had climbed back onto the base.

“ROWAN.”

He froze.

“Getting off.”

Good.

I opened my bag again.

“Everyone take a brownie.”

John frowned.

“This feels like bribery.”

“It is.”

He took one.

Because today was not merely about temptation.

It was about valuation.

And apparently I am now the Chief Financial Officer of Destiny.

✨ DAY THREE WRAP-UP

Department: Accounts Payable
Auditor: Me
Major finding: The Stronghold absolutely had hidden fees.
Tara’s offer: Certainty
Tara’s cost: Curiosity
Transaction status: DENIED
Reason: Completely unacceptable terms
John: Finally pleased there was a contract to distrust
Julie: Probably could have balanced the scales to the decimal
Laura: Rejected nonsense immediately
Lala: Attempted to determine the market value of sarcasm
Rowan: Removed from the scales twice
Emergency provision: Brownies
Oksana: Still somehow knew the outcome before the audit began

DeNae’s Practical Note:

If a magical fortress asks what you are willing to give up, do not start with what you can afford to lose.

Start with what you refuse to sell.

And if your sister is considering trading away curiosity?

Close the transaction. Feed her a brownie. Move on.

Tomorrow we apparently walk across roads made of stars.

Fantastic.

I’m bringing a head count sheet.

    Merci 🥰

🌠 DAY FOUR — NOT ALL STARS SHOW THE WAY

This chamber had no floor.

Technically.

There was a narrow stone platform floating above an endless universe.

Constellations glowed around us like roads.

Rowan climbed onto my shoulder.

“Old star paths.”

John looked down.

“I preferred the floor.”

Lala nodded.

“Big floor fan.”

Each constellation represented another possible destiny.

We could choose one.

I picked Hercules.

Mostly because it was glowing purple.

Sometimes rigorous scientific methodology looks like that.

The stars carried us into another version of our lives.

And this one surprised all of us.

We weren’t adventurers.

We weren’t chasing mysteries.

We had created a gigantic sanctuary filled with animals, gardens, books, workshops and people who needed somewhere safe to land.

Julie had chickens everywhere.

Obviously.

Laura ran the gardens.

Lala ran something called Complaints & Sarcasm, although nobody could determine whether it was an official department.

John taught young people to fly.

DeNae managed the entire operation and somehow still knew where everyone’s missing sweater was.

Oksana had a school.

Rowan taught magical history.

And I?

I was still writing everything down.

Only now the Handy Dandy Journals filled an entire library.

I expected another strange fate.

Instead, the Stronghold showed us something simple:

Sometimes the future isn’t about becoming someone completely different.

Sometimes it’s about becoming more of who you already are.

✨ DAY FOUR WRAP-UP

Found: Hercules Constellation
Saw: Another possible guild future.
Julie’s main concern: Who was feeding all those chickens?
DeNae: “Apparently me.”
John: Still skeptical, but noticeably quieter.
Rowan: Sparkled knowingly. Suspicious.
Handy Dandy Journal Note: Not every alternate life is a warning. Some are reminders.

🌠 DAY FOUR — HERDING CATS ACROSS THE UNIVERSE

Today the Stronghold removed the floor.

Technically, there was a floor.

If you count one narrow strip of stone floating over an endless universe as a floor.

I do not.

I stopped at the edge.

“No.”

Tara looked over her shoulder.

“What?”

“This is not a walkway.”

“It’s a star path.”

“That does not improve it.”

John looked down into the cosmic abyss.

“I preferred the floor.”

Lala nodded.

“Big floor fan.”

Finally, consensus.

Rowan climbed onto Tara’s shoulder and pointed toward the glowing constellations stretching through space.

“Old star paths.”

Wonderful.

We were apparently going hiking on astronomy.

I immediately switched into operations mode.

“Everybody stop.”

They stopped.

Mostly.

“Tara?”

“Here.”

“John?”

“Unfortunately.”

“Julie?”

“Here.”

“Laura?”

“Here.”

“Lala?”

“Present and deeply opposed.”

“Oksana?”

Oksana smiled.

Of course she did.

“Rowan?”

A shower of glitter fell from somewhere above Tara.

“ROWAN.”

His head popped up.

“Here!”

Eight.

Good.

“Stay together.”

Tara was already walking toward a glowing constellation.

“Tara.”

“I’m just looking.”

“That is what you said before touching the chalk.”

She ignored that.

Then, because apparently destiny has a sense of humor, she stopped at the brightest purple constellation.

“Hercules.”

I looked at it.

Then at Tara.

“Why that one?”

“It’s purple.”

I closed my eyes.

“Of course it is.”

John stared at her.

“That’s your selection process?”

“Rigorous scientific methodology.”

Lala whispered, “We’re going to die because of a color preference.”

I counted everyone again.

Eight.

Still good.

Then Tara stepped onto the Hercules path.

Naturally.

The constellation lit beneath her feet.

Stars stretched forward.

The road moved.

Everyone yelled something different.

I yelled the only useful thing.

“STAY TOGETHER.”

And then began the most exhausting six minutes of my life.

“Tara?”

“Here!”

“John?”

“Yes.”

“Julie?”

“Here.”

“Laura?”

“Here.”

“Lala?”

“Regrettably.”

“Oksana?”

Smile.

“Rowan?”

Glitter.

Good enough.

Then the star road twisted.

“Again.”

John stared at me.

“You just counted us.”

“Yes.”

“No one has moved.”

“Rowan is involved.”

Fair.

Six minutes later:

“Head count.”

Lala sighed.

“Still sarcastic.”

“Excellent. That’s how I identify you.”

Then the stars swallowed us.

⸻

We landed somewhere completely different.

No monsters.

No cursed temple.

No glowing contract.

Just…

Peace.

A massive sanctuary stretched across a beautiful valley.

Gardens.

Animals.

Libraries.

Workshops.

Schools.

People everywhere.

Happy people.

Safe people.

People who looked like they had finally found somewhere to belong.

I looked around.

“Oh.”

That was all I had.

Then I started seeing us.

Julie was surrounded by chickens.

Hundreds of them.

She looked delighted.

I looked at the chickens.

Then at her.

“Who is feeding all of those?”

Julie smiled.

“You are.”

Naturally.

Laura was running enormous gardens filled with flowers, vegetables, herbs and people learning how to grow things.

Lala had an office.

The sign said:

COMPLAINTS & SARCASM

I stared at it.

“That’s an actual department?”

Lala looked up from her desk.

“Apparently.”

A second sign read:

YES, I CARE.
NO, I CAN’T FIX STUPID.
NEXT.

Honestly, efficient.

John was teaching young people to fly.

Not magically.

Actually fly.

He was showing them how to trust themselves, make good decisions, and not panic.

Which is probably the first requirement in aviation and also in this guild.

Oksana had a school.

Of course she did.

Rowan was teaching magical history.

Sparkles were involved.

A lot of sparkles.

And then I saw myself.

Running the entire place.

Schedules.

Food.

Supplies.

Animals.

People.

Budgets.

Emergencies.

Three missing shoes.

A lost sweater.

Two arguments over garden space.

Someone asking where the extra blankets were.

And apparently I knew.

All of it.

Tara looked at me.

“You run everything.”

“I noticed.”

Julie called from the chicken area.

“DeNae! We’re low on feed!”

I pointed toward a storage building without even thinking.

“Third shelf, left side.”

I froze.

Tara stared at me.

“You really do know where everything is.”

I sighed.

“Apparently this is my destiny.”

Then a kid ran past.

“Miss DeNae! Have you seen my blue sweater?”

“Laundry room. Second basket.”

The kid ran off.

Lala appeared beside me.

“That’s terrifying.”

“Yes.”

Another voice shouted:

“DeNae! We need more tomatoes!”

“Greenhouse two.”

“Where are the extra notebooks?”

“Library storage.”

“Who has the keys to the west barn?”

“John.”

John looked down at his belt.

He did.

I stared at the sky.

“Fine.”

Tara was laughing.

“This is perfect.”

“It is exhausting.”

But it was.

Perfect, I mean.

Not because everything was easy.

It wasn’t.

People still needed things.

Animals still escaped.

Schedules still changed.

Someone had apparently built an entire Complaints & Sarcasm department.

But everyone had a place.

Everyone contributed something.

Nobody was alone.

And somehow…

I liked it.

Then I found Tara.

Of course she was in a library.

Rows and rows of shelves filled the room.

Every shelf was packed with Handy Dandy Journals.

Hundreds of them.

Maybe thousands.

She looked around quietly.

For once.

The Stronghold hadn’t shown us strangers.

It had shown us ourselves.

Just more.

More useful.

More settled.

More connected.

More of exactly what we already were.

I looked at everyone.

Then I counted.

Tara.

John.

Julie.

Laura.

Lala.

Oksana.

Rowan.

Me.

Eight.

Still together.

Good.

✨ DAY FOUR WRAP-UP

Found: Hercules Constellation
Transportation: Highly questionable celestial footpath
Head counts performed: Excessive, according to everyone else
Head counts actually necessary: All of them
People lost: Zero
Rowan incidents: Glitter-related, manageable
Julie: Owns approximately nine million chickens
Laura: Runs the gardens
Lala: Somehow got an officially sanctioned sarcasm department
John: Teaches flying
Oksana: Runs a school, because obviously
Rowan: Professor Sparkle
Tara: Filled an entire library with Handy Dandy Journals
Me: Apparently runs everything and knows where your sweater is

DeNae’s Practical Note:

Sometimes the future doesn’t change who you are.

It just gives you a much bigger building full of people who need snacks.

Tomorrow we get to ask the future one question.

I have already informed Tara:

She is not asking about aliens.

День 4
https://upforme.ru/uploads/0019/3c/8c/513/t572933.png

🌠 DAY 4 — “THE LIFE HE NEVER LIVED”
Found Item: Indus Constellation — “Beckoning Constellations” Collection
The Indus Constellation opened like a doorway.
Elias expected another version of his life.
Instead, we saw ours.
Years from now.
The seven of us were sitting around a fire beneath an enormous night sky.
Older.
Still together.
Tara was telling a story with enough hand gestures to endanger nearby beverages.
John was correcting her.
Lala was correcting John’s correction.
Laura was laughing.
DeNae was passing food around.
Oksana sat quietly beside the fire.
And I was holding an old notebook.
Elias wasn't there.
He stepped closer to the vision.
“Where am I?”
The Stronghold offered no answer.
Future Tara was talking about a flight.
“The mountain trip,” she said. “The one where the airport closed.”
John nodded.
“Someone reported a damaged approach light that morning.”
I remembered nothing about this.
Of course I didn't.
It hadn't happened yet.
Future John continued.
“If they hadn't closed that runway, I would've attempted the approach before the weather dropped.”
Laura looked toward him.
“And instead we diverted.”
“To that ridiculous little town,” Lala said.
“Where we found the underground observatory,” Tara added.
“And three days later,” future me said, “we met Dr. Sarin.”
The name meant nothing to me.
But everyone in the vision became quiet.
Apparently Dr. Sarin would matter very much.
The scene shifted.
A younger Elias appeared years earlier beside a lonely mountain road.
He noticed something flashing irregularly on a distant runway.
A broken approach light.
He nearly kept driving.
Then he stopped.
Made one phone call.
And forgot about it.
That was all.
No heroic rescue.
No great sacrifice.
Just a decision that took perhaps two minutes.
But the future rippled outward.
Runway closed.
John diverted.
The Guild reached another town.
We met someone we otherwise never would have met.
Dozens of lives branched from that one insignificant choice.
Elias stared at the stars.
“I never even knew.”
I finally understood what the Stronghold had been trying to show us.
“The Drawing Board wasn't incomplete.”
Elias looked at me.
“It just couldn't fit everything.”
Every choice crossed another person’s life.
Then another.
Then another.
The Indus Constellation blazed overhead, no longer a single road but thousands of connected points.
Oksana smiled.
“People like to imagine destiny as a path.”
She looked upward.
“Perhaps it's closer to a constellation.”
Elias studied the vision of seven friends whose future he had changed without ever meeting them.
For the first time, he seemed less interested in where his own road led.
He wanted to know who else it touched.
