💚❄ SNOW QUEEN’S ICE CITADEL ❄💚

DAY FOUR — FROZEN PERSONNEL AND ADMINISTRATIVE INCOMPETENCE

Today’s discovery: Rune of Rest — Ice Runes Collection

❄💚🔮

We finally reached the heart of the Citadel.

Five glowing runes covered the floor.

TIME. FLOW. PURITY. PEACE. SILENCE.

Julie began deciphering their purpose while John examined the chamber.

Nikita approached the Rune of Rest.

“Tara,” I warned, “don’t touch anything.”

“I wasn’t going to!”

Which, after sixty years of knowing my sister, is usually followed by disaster.

Nikita touched the rune.

Instantly, everyone froze.

Everyone except Tara.

And the fairies.

Naturally.

I found myself completely motionless, holding a chocolate bar halfway to my mouth.

THIS WAS UNACCEPTABLE.

I could see everything.

I could hear everything.

But I couldn’t move a muscle.

And my chocolate was RIGHT THERE.

Meanwhile, Tara was having the time of her life.

She rearranged John’s scarf, placed a tiny silver crown on Nikita, and posed beside me for an imaginary photograph.

“Oh, DeNae! You look so peaceful!”

Peaceful? PEACEFUL?!

I WAS GOING TO MURDER HER.

The fairies were giggling uncontrollably.

Lala was frozen with an expression that suggested she’d already prepared several highly inappropriate remarks.

John looked thoroughly unimpressed.

Julie appeared to be solving three mathematical equations in her head.

And Nikita?

Our poor engineer was standing perfectly still, wearing a tiny crown, while a fairy sprinkled glitter across his notebook.

I sincerely hoped his professional liability insurance covered magical humiliation.

Eventually, Oksana managed to move one finger and point toward the glowing symbols.

Apparently, not even centuries-old magic could completely override our guild director.

Tara pressed the central rune.

The spell broke.

Everyone unfroze.

I IMMEDIATELY FINISHED EATING MY CHOCOLATE.

Priorities.

Julie explained that the five runes were preserving the castle according to the Snow Queen’s final instructions.

“Everything must remain unchanged until Kai returns.”

I stared at the glowing floor.

“So we’re dealing with an ancient magical operating system following instructions nobody bothered to update?”

“Essentially,” Julie replied.

John studied the symbols.

“The runes are functioning exactly as intended. The problem is the original command.”

Nikita looked utterly defeated.

“You’re telling me this entire building has been repeating the same instructions for centuries?”

“Welcome to administrative incompetence,” I replied.

“This place needs revised policies, proper management, and possibly therapy.”

Lala nodded.

“Definitely therapy.”

Then the Rune of Rest began glowing again.

Five mysterious words appeared across its frozen surface.

❄ HE MUST RETURN TO HOME. ❄

Tara gasped.

“WE NEED KAI!”

Nikita looked horrified.

“He’s been gone for centuries!”

Oksana smiled thoughtfully.

“Perhaps we don’t need Kai himself. Perhaps we need his story.”

Julie nodded.

“The castle may be waiting for proof that its instructions have been fulfilled.”

I thought about the Snow Queen’s heartbroken expression in the treasury.

She hadn’t been trying to imprison anyone.

She had simply been unable to let go.

And somehow, her grief had become the entire castle’s responsibility.

“Well,” I sighed, “tomorrow we’d better find that boy’s story and straighten this mess out.”

From somewhere above us came a strange scraping sound.

Something was moving across the frozen floor.

Tara’s eyes lit up.

“ANOTHER MYSTERY!”

Oh, for heaven’s sake. Couldn’t we have ONE normal afternoon?

Naturally, I updated my expense report.

💚 DENAE’S EXPENSE REPORT — DAY FOUR 💚

Unauthorized freezing of personnel: 7.

Chocolate interrupted: 1. UNFORGIVABLE.

Ancient administrative errors: 5.

Nikita’s professional dignity: Severely compromised.

Fairy glitter cleanup costs: Undetermined.

Tara’s unauthorized decorating activities: 3.

Oksana’s ability to overcome ancient magic: Priceless.

Number of times Tara needed adult supervision: Don’t ask.

Remaining patience: Dangerously low.

Personal observation: The Citadel isn’t broken. It’s simply following an outdated set of instructions that nobody ever bothered to correct.

Sometimes the hardest thing isn’t fixing what’s broken. It’s helping someone understand that it’s finally safe to move forward.

Also, effective immediately, Tara is prohibited from possessing magical artifacts while the rest of us are immobilized.

She has already appealed this decision.

Appeal DENIED.

Day 5 — Return Address
Found item: Kai’s Sleigh — “Frozen” collection
Nikita had explained calendars to the walls.
The walls had remained unmoved, which was admittedly part of the problem.
Oksana suggested looking for something Kai had used outside the palace.
We returned to his room. John raised the bed, Tara held the lantern, and DeNae spotted the sleigh. Julie worked its cord free.
When Nikita lifted it, sunlight spilled across the floor.
Kai and Gerda appeared on a snowy street. Ahead stood their home, with light in the window.
Kai had been pulling the sleigh. Now he climbed aboard.
“One last hill,” he said.
Gerda pushed.
They shot down the slope, laughing, and stopped in a snowbank outside the house.
A voice called from the open door.
“You’re back!”
Kai scrambled up, leaving one mitten on the sleigh.
“Yes!” he shouted. “We’re home!”
The vision disappeared.
Julie whispered, “He did return. We just saw it.”
Oksana read the Queen’s exact words again.
Nikita looked at me.
“She never said he had to return to the Citadel.”
“Precisely. A serious omission in an otherwise impressively inconvenient command.”
He put down the sleigh and addressed the room.
“Kai has returned. He’s home.”
The silence held.
“He wasn’t coming back here,” I added. “But he did get back safely. You can stop keeping everything ready.”
A drop struck Nikita’s notebook.
He stared at the wet spot.
Another fell.
The clock advanced. Water slipped beneath the floor.
DeNae caught the next drop in her palm. John checked the thawing arches; they held. From the circular hall, Julie called that the ice bird was finally singing.
Tara cheered loudly enough to test the Rune of Silence.
A window opened, letting in fresh air.
Beside the central display, one armored polar bear’s cap slid over an eye.
I straightened it.
It stayed straight.
“Try leaving it crooked,” Tara said.
“No. I’ve restored precisely one thing on this expedition, and it’s staying restored.”
Even Oksana laughed.
That was when I believed the waiting was over.
At home, Nikita found a snowflake in his pocket and labelled it “unknown crystalline structure.”
I sent him a warmer label:
Thank-you note.
He claimed not to use it.
The next time I visited, my label was inside the lid.

❄👑 SNOW QUEEN’S ICE CITADEL 👑❄

DAY FIVE — THE BOY WHO ALREADY CAME HOME

Today’s discovery: Kai’s Sled — Frozen Collection

❄⛸✨

On our final morning inside the Ice Citadel, something extraordinary happened.

Nikita admitted that magic might actually exist.

Well, not officially.

His exact words were, “There appear to be several phenomena that cannot currently be explained by conventional structural engineering.”

CLOSE ENOUGH!

I immediately recorded this historic moment in my Handy Dandy Journal.

DeNae suggested I stop celebrating and help find whatever had been scraping across the floors during the night.

Honestly, some people have no appreciation for scientific breakthroughs.

We followed the mysterious sound back to Kai’s bedroom.

There, surrounded by tiny snow fairies, sat an old wooden sled.

It hadn’t been there before.

“Someone moved it,” Nikita insisted.

“Obviously,” Lala replied. “The sled got tired of waiting, too.”

When Nikita touched the sled, golden light filled the room.

Suddenly, a beautiful memory appeared before us.

Kai and Gerda were racing through the snow, laughing as they approached a little village.

The endless winter was gone.

Spring sunlight sparkled across the rooftops.

Families hurried outside to greet them.

Then Kai jumped from the sled and ran into welcoming arms.

HE WAS HOME!

For once, I forgot about aliens, ancient runes, and even my perfectly reasonable theory that the Snow Queen might have had extraterrestrial assistance.

The little boy was safe.

He was happy.

And he was loved.

Beside me, DeNae quietly whispered:

“Look at his face. That boy isn’t escaping anymore. He’s going home.”

Nikita frowned.

“But the Snow Queen ordered the castle to wait until he returned.”

DeNae shook her head.

“She never said he had to return HERE.”

Julie suddenly smiled.

“Of course! The castle has misunderstood the meaning of the Queen’s command.”

John nodded.

“The condition was fulfilled centuries ago.”

Oksana looked toward the frozen walls.

“Then perhaps it’s time someone finally tells the castle.”

I stepped forward, clutching my Handy Dandy Journal.

“DEAR BEAUTIFUL, STUBBORN, OVERLY DRAMATIC FROZEN CASTLE!”

DeNae closed her eyes.

“Oh, dear Lord.”

I continued.

“Kai came home! He was loved! He was happy! You don’t have to wait anymore!”

Nikita placed his hand against the icy wall.

“Your instructions have been fulfilled. He’s home.”

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then…

Drip.

Another drip.

The ancient clock began ticking.

Frozen waterfalls stirred.

Crystal flowers bloomed beneath the transparent floors.

And all around us, the Ice Citadel began to awaken!

WE DID IT! WE BROKE THE SPELL!

The fairies erupted into joyful dancing.

Julie smiled as her little ice chicken flapped happily on her shoulder.

John looked genuinely amazed.

Oksana beamed proudly.

Lala brushed glitter from her hair.

“Wonderful. We’ve saved the castle and caught fairy dandruff.”

DeNae opened her snack bag.

“Excellent. Can we PLEASE eat now?”

Nikita stood silently, watching water flow through the ancient palace for the first time in centuries.

Then he opened his notebook.

“Building condition: stable. Unexplained phenomena: extensive.”

I leaned over his shoulder.

“Don’t forget the fairies!”

He sighed and added:

“Fairy infestation: probable.”

👑 TARA’S HANDY DANDY JOURNAL — DAY FIVE 👑

Kai’s magical sled: DISCOVERED!

Ancient castle mystery: SOLVED!

Kai’s safe return home: CONFIRMED!

Snow Queen’s instructions: FINALLY understood.

Five ancient runes: Successfully released from duty.

Frozen waterfalls: FLOWING!

Magical snow fairies: CELEBRATING!

Nikita’s belief in magic: 99.9% CONVERTED!

DeNae’s emergency snack supply: Dangerously depleted.

Possible alien involvement: Investigation remains OPEN.

Personal observation: Sometimes the greatest mysteries aren’t solved by ancient spells, scientific instruments, or even a very fabulous magical tiara.

Sometimes they’re solved by understanding that love is stronger than winter, stronger than time, and powerful enough to bring someone home.

I glanced at my big sister.

And sometimes the wisest person in the entire enchanted castle is the one who remembered to bring cookies.

But I’m still keeping my alien theories.

Just in case.

❄👑💖 💖👑❄

❄👑 SNOW QUEEN’S ICE CITADEL 👑❄

EPILOGUE — MINOR DEVIATIONS & MAGICAL GOODBYES

Five days. One enchanted castle. A thousand impossible discoveries. And one engineer who will never look at a snowflake the same way again.

❄👑✨

After five extraordinary days, our adventure at the Snow Queen’s Ice Citadel was finally coming to an end.

The frozen waterfalls flowed again.

Crystal flowers sparkled beneath the transparent floors.

The enchanted corridors had stopped rearranging themselves.

Well…

MOSTLY.

One hallway still insisted on leading directly to the royal treasury.

Personally, I thought this was an excellent architectural feature.

DeNae disagreed.

“We are NOT going back for souvenirs, Tara.”

Honestly, my sister has no appreciation for historical preservation.

Nikita was busy completing his official inspection report.

I peeked over his shoulder.

“Facility in satisfactory condition. Minor deviations corrected. Further use possible following re-inspection.”

MINOR DEVIATIONS?!

“Excuse me, Nikita! We discovered ancient runes, moving hallways, magical memories, talking ice, and an entire civilization of cookie-stealing fairies!”

He calmly closed his notebook.

“Unusual environmental conditions.”

John chuckled.

“That’s one way to describe it.”

Lala folded her arms.

“I’d have gone with ‘complete violation of every known building code.’”

Julie smiled as her little ice chicken nestled happily against her shoulder.

Oksana, who had somehow organized our departure before anyone realized we were leaving, handed Nikita a beautifully wrapped gift.

Inside was a silver measuring tape engraved with the words:

“SOME THINGS CANNOT BE MEASURED.”

For the first time all week, Nikita laughed.

Then a tiny snow fairy fluttered down, kissed his cheek, and vanished in a shower of glitter.

He stared at the empty air.

I grinned.

“Optical phenomenon?”

He sighed.

“Unusual atmospheric conditions.”

OH, NIKITA. WE HAVE SO MUCH WORK LEFT TO DO ON YOU.

As we approached the enormous castle doors, I turned for one last look.

The Ice Citadel shimmered beneath the winter sky.

It no longer felt lonely.

It felt peaceful.

Alive.

Home.

I touched my purple tiara and smiled.

“Goodbye, beautiful castle. Thank you for the magic.”

A thousand tiny snowflakes swirled into the air.

One landed in my hand.

It sparkled like a miniature star, then disappeared.

I KNEW IT! THE CASTLE LOVED US!

DeNae was already counting everyone and checking her supply bags.

“Six guild members, one engineer, assorted belongings… Tara, WHERE IS YOUR JOURNAL?”

I looked down.

My Handy Dandy Journal was floating gently toward me, carried by three giggling fairies.

“See? Excellent customer service!”

John shook his head.

Lala laughed.

Julie cuddled her ice chicken.

Oksana smiled knowingly.

And Nikita pretended not to notice a fairy waving goodbye from his coat pocket.

Naturally, I made one final journal entry.

👑 TARA’S HANDY DANDY JOURNAL — FINAL REPORT 👑

Enchanted castle explored: CHECK!

Ancient magical mystery solved: CHECK!

Snow Queen’s promise fulfilled: CHECK!

Magical fairies discovered: DEFINITELY REAL!

Julie acquired an ice chicken: YES!

Nikita’s scientific certainty: CRITICALLY DAMAGED!

Guild friendships strengthened: IMMEASURABLE!

DeNae’s remaining patience: Surprisingly, some.

Possible alien involvement: FILE REMAINS OPEN!

Final observation: Magic isn’t always about spells, mysterious treasures, or ancient runes.

Sometimes it’s about friendship, laughter, love, and helping someone finally find their way home.

And sometimes it’s about convincing a very stubborn engineer that FAIRIES ARE REAL!

As we headed home, I announced our next adventure.

“GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE! I FOUND ANOTHER ABANDONED CASTLE!”

DeNae stopped walking.

“No.”

“But it’s supposed to be haunted!”

“ABSOLUTELY NOT.”

“And Nikita has already been invited!”

Behind us, Nikita quietly whispered:

“I’M RETIRING.”

❄👑💖 THE END — UNTIL OUR NEXT MAGICAL ADVENTURE! 💖👑❄

P.S. Nikita later discovered a tiny snowflake in his notebook that never melted. He labeled it “Unknown Crystalline Structure.” I labeled it “PROOF.”

💚❄ SNOW QUEEN’S ICE CITADEL ❄💚

DAY FIVE — HOME WAS NEVER A PLACE

Today’s discovery: Kai’s Sled — Frozen Collection

💚⛸❄

By the fifth morning, I was ready for three things.

A hot shower.

A decent meal.

And five uninterrupted minutes without my younger sister announcing another magical discovery.

Naturally, I received none of them.

Nikita had spent hours attempting to explain to the castle that centuries had passed since the Snow Queen’s final command.

He’d presented historical records, dates, architectural diagrams, and enough documentation to satisfy a government audit.

The castle remained unimpressed.

Frankly, I understood its position.

After five days, I was getting tired of Nikita’s paperwork, too.

Then Tara announced she’d heard something moving upstairs.

“ANOTHER MYSTERY!”

I sighed.

“Wonderful. Let’s go investigate before she adopts whatever’s making the noise.”

We returned to Kai’s abandoned bedroom.

There, resting on the frozen floor, sat an old wooden sled.

Several tiny snow fairies fluttered around it.

I checked my supply bag.

All cookies accounted for. Miraculously.

When Nikita touched the sled, golden light filled the room.

A beautiful memory unfolded before us.

Kai and Gerda were racing through fresh snow, laughing as they approached a little village.

The terrible winter was ending.

Sunshine touched the rooftops.

Families came running from their homes.

Then Kai jumped from the sled and ran straight into the arms of the people who loved him.

I felt my heart squeeze.

There was something about that little boy’s face.

After everything he’d endured, he wasn’t frightened.

He wasn’t lost.

He was happy.

He was HOME.

“Look at his face,” I whispered.

Everyone grew quiet.

“That boy isn’t escaping anymore. He’s going home.”

Nikita frowned.

“But the Snow Queen ordered the palace to wait until he returned.”

I looked at him.

“She never said he had to return HERE.”

Julie nodded thoughtfully.

John lowered his gaze.

Even Lala stopped making sarcastic remarks.

Which, honestly, was another miracle.

“Home isn’t always the place somebody’s waiting for you,” I continued.

“It’s where you’re loved. And Kai found his way back to the people who loved him.”

Nikita stared at the memory.

Then something changed in his expression.

For the first time all week, he wasn’t trying to calculate, measure, or explain anything.

He simply understood.

Oksana smiled gently.

“The castle has been waiting for a promise that was fulfilled long ago.”

Tara stepped toward the icy wall.

“DEAR BEAUTIFUL, STUBBORN, OVERLY DRAMATIC FROZEN CASTLE!”

I closed my eyes.

“Please, Tara. Just this once, use your indoor voice.”

Naturally, she ignored me.

“Kai came home! He was loved! He was happy! You can rest now!”

Nikita placed his hand against the frozen wall.

“He’s home. Your instructions have been fulfilled.”

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then…

Drip.

Another drop followed.

The old clock began ticking.

Frozen waterfalls trembled.

A window sealed for centuries slowly opened.

And suddenly, the entire Citadel began to shimmer with life.

THE CASTLE WAS FINALLY FREE!

Tiny snow fairies danced through the air.

Tara cried happy tears.

Julie smiled.

John looked genuinely impressed.

Oksana watched with quiet satisfaction.

Lala dabbed at her eyes.

“It’s condensation,” she insisted.

“Of course, sweetheart,” I replied, handing her a tissue.

Nikita stood completely still, watching the beautiful transformation.

“Remarkable,” he whispered.

I smiled.

“See? Sometimes you don’t need another measurement. You just need to understand the people involved.”

He actually laughed.

NIKITA LAUGHED!

Five days of ancient magic, and THAT may have been our greatest accomplishment.

Then my stomach growled.

Loudly.

I opened my snack bag.

“Wonderful. We’ve saved an entire enchanted palace. NOW CAN WE PLEASE EAT?”

Naturally, the fairies appeared immediately.

Apparently, they had heard the word “eat.”

I looked at their eager little faces.

“Oh, absolutely not. You’ve already negotiated your cookie allowance.”

The smallest fairy blinked innocently.

Then held out both hands.

TWO COOKIES?!

I was going to need a vacation from this vacation.

💚 DENAE’S FINAL EXPENSE REPORT — DAY FIVE 💚

Kai’s magical sled: Located.

Ancient mystery: SOLVED!

Centuries-old royal misunderstanding: Corrected.

Frozen castle restored: 1.

Skeptical engineer converted: Almost.

Nikita’s first genuine laugh: PRICELESS.

Fairy cookies distributed: Too many.

Tara’s emotional outbursts: Understandable, for once.

Total reimbursement received: $0.

Amount of chocolate remaining: Classified information.

Was the adventure worth it?

Every single penny.

Well…

Almost.

Personal observation: Sometimes people hold on to things because they’re afraid of losing what those things represent. Memories, love, family, and the feeling of belonging.

But love doesn’t disappear just because life moves forward.

Home isn’t always a building, a castle, or even a place on a map.

Sometimes home is simply being surrounded by the people who love you.

I looked around at our ridiculous, wonderful guild family.

Tara was hugging a fairy.

Julie was protecting her ice chicken.

John was shaking his head.

Lala was making inappropriate jokes.

Oksana was already organizing our departure.

And Nikita was trying to pretend he hadn’t just witnessed an entire enchanted castle wake up.

I smiled.

Yep. These are my people.

And apparently, they’re my responsibility.

Heaven help me.

❄💚✨ ✨💚❄

💚❄ SNOW QUEEN’S ICE CITADEL ❄💚

EPILOGUE — I AM NOT ADOPTING A FAIRY!

Five days of magic, mysteries, questionable decisions, and enough fairy-related expenses to require a formal audit.

💚❄🍪

After five extraordinary days, we were FINALLY leaving the Snow Queen’s Ice Citadel.

The castle shimmered behind us, alive again with flowing waterfalls, sparkling crystal flowers, and enough magical creatures to keep my sister entertained for the next century.

Personally, I was looking forward to three things.

A hot shower. A proper meal. And a large glass of wine.

Preferably all before Tara announced another adventure.

Nikita had completed his official inspection report.

“Facility in satisfactory condition. Minor deviations corrected.”

I stared at him.

“MINOR?”

“We were trapped in a hallway, frozen by ancient runes, robbed by fairies, and nearly crushed by moving walls!”

Lala nodded.

“I recommend adding ‘unexplained emotional damage.’”

John laughed.

Julie was busy trying to figure out how to safely transport her new ice chicken.

Because apparently, we now had a poultry department.

Oksana presented Nikita with a beautiful silver measuring tape engraved:

“SOME THINGS CANNOT BE MEASURED.”

He smiled.

Then a tiny fairy kissed his cheek and disappeared in a cloud of glitter.

Nikita muttered something about atmospheric conditions.

I patted his shoulder.

“Sweetheart, just accept it. Your measuring tape lost this argument three days ago.”

Tara was busy waving goodbye to approximately forty-seven fairies.

I was busy making sure none of them had stolen the rest of our provisions.

SOMEONE HAD TO BE RESPONSIBLE.

Finally, we gathered our belongings and began the journey home.

Peace.

Quiet.

No enchanted corridors.

No ancient curses.

No floating furniture.

It was glorious.

Then I reached into my supply bag for my last chocolate cookie.

Something moved.

I froze.

Not magically this time.

Just suspiciously.

Slowly, I opened the bag.

Inside sat a tiny snow fairy with silver-white hair, sparkling emerald eyes, and delicate crystal wings.

She was wearing a miniature green ribbon.

AND EATING MY LAST COOKIE.

We stared at each other.

She smiled.

I did not.

“Absolutely not.”

She blinked.

“I am NOT adopting a fairy.”

She tilted her head.

“I am NOT bringing you home.”

She offered me half the cookie.

Oh, the audacity.

Then she sneezed.

GLITTER. DIRECTLY. INTO. MY. FACE.

Tara turned around.

“DENAE! YOU HAVE A FAIRY!”

“No, Tara. I have a trespasser.”

Tara squealed.

“SHE’S ADORABLE! WE HAVE TO NAME HER!”

“No, we do not.”

“PRINCESS SPARKLECRUMB!”

“ABSOLUTELY NOT!”

The fairy clapped happily.

Apparently, the vote was two to one.

Lala was laughing so hard she could barely breathe.

John shook his head.

Julie suggested the fairy might simply need a loving home.

Oksana smiled that mysterious smile that suggested she’d known this was coming all along.

Nikita quietly wrote something in his notebook.

I narrowed my eyes.

“What are you writing?”

He hesitated.

“Possible unauthorized transportation of magical wildlife.”

I WAS SURROUNDED BY IDIOTS.

I looked back at the tiny fairy.

She looked up at me with those enormous green eyes.

Then she reached out and hugged my finger.

Oh, for heaven’s sake.

Well played, you glitter-covered little criminal.

I sighed.

“Fine. But there are RULES.”

The fairy sat up straight.

“No stealing. No rearranging furniture. No freezing the kitchen. And absolutely NO glitter in the food.”

She nodded enthusiastically.

“And you’re helping with the dishes.”

The fairy saluted.

Tara nearly collapsed with happiness.

“DENAE ADOPTED PRINCESS SPARKLECRUMB!”

“I DID NOT! She’s an unpaid household employee!”

Nobody believed me.

Naturally, I updated my final expense report.

💚 DENAE’S FINAL EXPENSE REPORT — EPILOGUE 💚

Enchanted castles saved: 1.

Guild members returned safely: ALL ACCOUNTED FOR!

Ancient magical mysteries solved: 1.

Nikita’s scientific explanations: Officially ridiculous.

Fairy-related cookie losses: EXTENSIVE.

Unauthorized magical passengers: 1.

New household employees: 1. Unpaid.

Expected glitter cleanup expenses: Catastrophic.

Tara’s excitement level: Unmanageable.

Total reimbursement received: STILL $0.

Was the adventure worth it?

Every single penny.

Even the cookies.

Well…

MOST of the cookies.

As we traveled home, I looked around at our ridiculous, wonderful guild family.

Tara was already writing another adventure in her Handy Dandy Journal.

Julie was cuddling her little ice chicken.

John was pretending he hadn’t enjoyed every minute of our expedition.

Lala was still laughing about my fairy.

Oksana was organizing the next guild event.

And Nikita was quietly examining a tiny snowflake that refused to melt.

I smiled.

We hadn’t just helped an enchanted castle stop waiting for someone who was already home.

We’d reminded it what home really meant.

Love. Friendship. Laughter. Belonging.

And occasionally, a lifetime supply of emergency chocolate.

Princess Sparklecrumb peeked out of my bag.

“Don’t even think about it,” I warned.

She smiled sweetly.

Then stole another cookie.

SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE.

❄💚🍪 THE END — UNTIL THE NEXT EXPENSIVE ADVENTURE! 🍪💚❄

P.S. Tara has officially registered Princess Sparklecrumb as a guild member.

I have submitted a formal objection.

Oksana approved the membership anyway.

I’m going to need more wine.

Guild Quest. Day 5. The Ice Citadel - Minor Deviations
Guild: Double D’s
https://i.imgur.com/3byNJYkm.png

⛸ DAY 5 — “HE'S LONG BACK”
Topic: Kai's Mitten | Collection: Frozen

❄🏰🧤 On the fifth morning, the Guild returned to Kai's chamber. The room looked exactly as it had on their first visit, except that the little ice chicken Julie had admired now stood beside the window, apparently keeping watch. Nikita examined the shelves, the bed, and the old wooden toys. “We need something that remembers Kai after he left,” he explained. Tara searched beneath the furniture while consulting her Handy Dandy Journal. “Every great mystery has one overlooked clue!” DeNae handed her a flashlight. “Every great mystery also has someone crawling under furniture without checking for spiders.” Lala inspected a wardrobe. “If a frozen skeleton jumps out, I'm resigning from the Guild.” John smiled. “You said that after the haunted elevator.” “And I meant it both times!” Oksana quietly opened a small drawer beside the bed. Inside lay a single woolen mitten, carefully folded.

🧤✨❄ Julie noticed a tiny embroidered flower near the mitten's wrist. “Gerda's work,” she whispered. “She must have made this for Kai.” Nikita lifted the mitten, and the Ice Shard from Day One suddenly began glowing inside his equipment case. The room dissolved into a brilliant winter landscape. Kai and Gerda stood together outside the Citadel, laughing as sunlight broke through the clouds. Kai held the mitten in his hand. “I won't need this where we're going,” he said. “Home will be warm.” Gerda smiled and took his hand. “Then let's go home.” Behind them, the Snow Queen's palace stood silent beneath the snow. As the children disappeared into the distance, Kai turned once and whispered, “Goodbye.” The mitten remained behind, caught on a branch near the palace gates.

❄💔⏳ The vision shifted again. The children arrived at a familiar little house, where roses bloomed beside the windows. Kai rushed inside, laughing as he recognized everything he had loved before his captivity. Gerda followed, and the door closed behind them. At that exact moment, the five Runes flashed across the memory, but nothing changed inside the Citadel. Julie understood first. “The palace witnessed Kai's departure, but never his arrival home.” John nodded. “It was waiting for a landing at the wrong airport.” Tara gasped. “The Queen said until his return, not until he returns here!” DeNae folded her arms. “Five centuries of magical inconvenience because nobody clarified the destination.” Lala shook her head. "Typical. Even ancient royalty can't give proper instructions." Oksana smiled gently. “Then we finally know what the Citadel needs to hear.”

🧊🔮🏰 Carrying the mitten and Ice Shard, the Guild returned to the chamber of the five Runes. Nikita placed both objects at the center of the glowing floor. The memory of Kai's homecoming appeared above them, filling the chamber with golden warm light. “The Queen commanded you to preserve everything until Kai returned,” Nikita declared. “And he did return. Not to this palace, but to the home where he belonged.” The Rune of Time flickered. The Rune of Rest trembled. The Rune of Silence released a long, mournful sigh. Then the Citadel's voice answered: “RETURN CONFIRMED? DESTINATION UNKNOWN.” Tara immediately stepped forward. "HOME! HOME! The place with love, family, and preferably snacks!" DeNae raised her bag. “On that last point, I can provide supporting evidence.” John stepped beside Nikita. “The journey was completed. The destination was reached.” Julie added softly, “And the Queen never specified that he must return to her.”
https://i.imgur.com/fQFCFoV.jpeg

❄💧❤ For several terrible seconds, nothing happened. Then Oksana placed her hand upon the Rune of Flow. “You have fulfilled your promise,” she whispered. “You may rest now.” Lala gently laid Kai's mitten beside the Ice Shard. “You've waited long enough, sweetheart. Let him go.” Suddenly the five Runes blazed together. The frozen waterfall trembled, then began to move. A single drop struck the floor, followed by another, and then a magnificent cascade of sparkling water poured into the ancient basin. Somewhere above them, the great clock advanced one minute. The windows opened, fresh air swept through the corridors, and the Citadel shuddered as though awakening from a centuries-long dream. Tara threw both arms into the air. “WE DID IT!” John caught her as the floor shifted beneath her feet. “Perhaps celebrate after the building finishes rearranging itself!” Nikita watched the flowing water in amazement. “Remarkable,” he whispered. “A successful correction of a persistent command interpretation error.” Lala laughed. “He means we broke the spell!”

🏰🌞✨ The Citadel did not melt or collapse. Instead, it transformed. Sunlight filled chambers that had known only winter. Water flowed beneath transparent floors, and the once-silent halls echoed with gentle sounds. The Rune of Purity continued protecting the palace's ice, while Time, Flow, Rest, and Silence resumed their natural balance. Julie discovered that her little ice chicken had acquired a companion, a tiny rooster. “Apparently the Citadel approves of happy endings,” she said. DeNae distributed the last of her snacks, Tara enthusiastically documented the entire adventure, and John congratulated Nikita on completing the strangest engineering inspection of his career. Oksana smiled knowingly. “Sometimes the greatest discovery is learning when to stop holding on.” Nikita looked around the beautiful, living palace. “I suppose,” he admitted, “that not every deviation requires correction.” The enormous doors opened before them, revealing the bright afternoon beyond. This time, nobody blamed a draft.
https://i.imgur.com/p7FWyUg.jpeg

📌 FOUND: Kai's Mitten - Frozen Collection. The mitten preserved the memory of Kai's true homecoming, proving that the Snow Queen's command had already been fulfilled. When Nikita showed the Citadel that Kai had returned to the place he loved, the five Runes finally released their centuries-long vigil.

❄🏰 EPILOGUE — “MINOR DEVIATIONS”

📋❄ A week later, Nikita submitted his official inspection report to the management of the Mysterious House.

Structural condition: satisfactory. Several minor discrepancies between the original plans and existing configuration have been resolved. The property may be considered for public access following a routine follow-up inspection.

The manager read it twice.

"That's all? What about the corridors that move?"

“Unusual spatial arrangements.”

“The images of people who lived centuries ago?”

“Exceptional optical characteristics.”

“And the reports that the palace actually spoke to you?”

Nikita looked up from his paperwork.

"Buildings make noises. This one is simply more articulate than most."

The manager stared at him for a long moment, then wisely decided not to ask about the six Explorers Guild members whose separate reports included references to magical Runes, animated ravens, and a chicken made of ice.

❄❤ Before departing, Nikita made one final inspection. The great waterfall flowed peacefully, sunlight sparkled through the transparent walls, and the ancient clock ticked with reassuring regularity. At the entrance, the enormous doors opened silently before he reached them.

“Goodbye,” he said quietly.

For just a moment, five tiny lights shimmered beneath the floor.

Then the doors closed gently behind him.

Several days later, while unpacking his equipment, Nikita discovered a perfect little snowflake tucked inside his coat pocket. It remained frozen in his warm hand, refusing to melt even when he held it beneath a lamp.

He examined it for a considerable time before placing it inside a small glass case.

The label reads :

Unidentified crystalline specimen. Unusual thermal properties. Further investigation unnecessary.

He kept the case on his desk for many years.

Whenever someone asked about it, he explained that it was a souvenir from an interesting architectural assignment.

And whenever Tara visited, she would grin, adjust her bejeweled tinfoil tiara, and whisper, “Still believe fairy tales don't exist?”

Nikita would smile, glance toward the snowflake, and answer:

“Of course they don't. But apparently, some buildings haven't been informed.”
